Suggestions on how to get a Wii?

aracko
I suppose one could use companies that use macros to purchase all available tickets within seconds of release as an example of an ethical business practice.
It would probably be a money losing practice too. They're only buying big blocks of tickets for concerts where the market price for most seats is anticipated to be a lot higher than the original price.

So one could argue that if the first ten rows or whatever of a big concert go for 500 bucks a ticket on the secondary market, it's the fault of the original sellers for not setting the tickets closer to market price.

Concert tickets go for way more then $500. I know for certain big name acts like Hannah Montanna they routinely sell for thousands after selling out in minutes. Right now the highest reported price paid is somewhere around $20K for a ticket to her concert. And it's a huge money maker for ticket brokers, which is why any of the major firms use macros to swoop in and claim every available ticket and create an artificial secondary market where they can set whatever price they choose. Tossing blame at those willing to pay those ridiculous sums is ignoring the fact the practice of market manipulation is immoral, unethical, and in many instances blatantly illegal.

Whatever price it is they go for, the bottom line is that the business model needs to change IMO. Why not auction the first 10-20 rows to the highest bidder right off the bat? Sell the tickets for what they're worth in the first place. The brokers aren't completely to blame. The secondary market's gonna keep chugging along with or without those programs you're talking about or even with or without the professional brokers themselves. With eBay and Craigs List and whatever, the minute tickets go on sale you've got everyone across the country trying to score tickets. Fans are going to shut out of the good tickets regardless. I say either go with the auction idea or you're going to have to make every ticket a will call ticket only available with ID of the person who bought the ticket at the door and on the day of the show.

I just bought a Wii on eBay yesterday...yes, I overpaid, but it came with Wii Play, an extra nunchuk, and the new Mario game, so I didn't care too much. The wife really wanted one for Christmas, so I figured what the heck...it would've been harder to think of a different "big" gift idea for her. I rarely splurge on too much stuff, so it's not a big deal.

I guess I don't view people that are trying to make a few extra bucks by being a personal shopper of sorts as wrong or immoral. If you are driving all over town and standing in line to get these and sell them for a profit of around $120.00(which is after shipping and all fees), and people are willing to pay that much for them instead of not having them at all, why is that a bad thing? I pay 7 bucks for a beer at a Bucks game. Does it suck? Yes. But if I want a beer, I have to fork out the 7 bucks. The people that are "overpaying" for the Wii's are just happy that they are getting them at all as evidenced in the prior post.

If you feel like torturing them, get them a "Vii".

That would be hilarious. At $170 it's a little expensive for a joke present though.

As Toby pointed out, a Wii is not a necessity by any means, so I would not feel bad if I would had resold mine, or several. If you're charging $20 for a bottle of water or formula after a hurricane, it's an ethical question. However, a Wii is just a silly toy. My son is 5, and he will enjoy it, but he also enjoys boxes stuff comes in.

Supposedly, friends of mine who still work at TRU say Nintendo is short in part due to the fact their suppliers cannot make the "chips" or some vital part quickly and good enough. Not sure if that's true or not, but I've heard it from 3 different people.

Finally, as for getting one before Xmas, I'd decide what your max is, add $20 to it, and bid on Ebay for a while. Many went for $325-350 when we got ours...some do slip through the cracks, weekends especially, when fewer folks are online. I bid that with hours to go and no one topped it.

Are any of these thing being sold on Dutch auctions? I've frequently found those to be a nice combination of cost control and somewhat easier bidding.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

How can you put a price on happiness?

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

  • 2 weeks later...
Over the weekend, stores have received several Wii's in stock so the market has now been flooded a bit. For people looking to get them for Christmas, I just checked ebay and you can get them for about $300 plus shipping. Also the J/S this morning has an article stating that Gamestop is giving our rainchecks to get them after Christmas if you can wait that long.

Let's turn this thread back to the original topic: suggestions on how to get a Wii. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Thank you hawing.

FYI - still trying no luck. I did read about a guy who sold guitar hero on WII for like 9 grand on yahoo. I believe that to not be true.

It was the main article on yahoo this AM before I came to work (about 0530). It was on the page you go to in order to check your email. Somoene else here had to see it. Some kid was smoking pot so his dad sold it on him and ended up getting 9000.00 US for it from some guy in Austraila

My brother showed up at Target (124th & Capitol) Sunday morning at 7:45 and got a ticket to purchase a Wii. He said that the ticket was unnecessary as only about 8 people were there (before the store opened). Like last year it seems pretty hit or miss.

i saw that on the CBS up to the minute newscast last night. the guy was from canada, and is full of it IMO, but it did make the national news. i think he is just using some pscyological warfare on his kid.

EDIT: i heard that walmart is getting some in tomorrow(tuesday 18th) here in Beloit.

why on earth did you need to buy a "few?"

that crap angers me...

people who buy a few and sell them for a profit are the exact reason there is a shortage.

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

The reason there is a shortage is because that's how Nintendo wants it. They negotiate prices with each store (or chain, in most cases), and if Nintendo keeps the supply low, the stores will pay more for them.

Fair play to those who buy them to resell, they have to go through the same trouble to get them as everybody else. That time is clearly worth something, as long as there are people willing to overpay for them on ebay. Nobody NEEDS to buy a Wii.

cough, check out my sig, cough.

WOW, surprised you only got $350, as that's only a $40 premium.

yeah, someone got a sweet deal...oh well, It's all profit to me. My dad bought me it for xmas, and I really didn't want it....There are just so many Wiis on there right now. I think most of them are getting bid up by friends.

I just got an email from the winning bidder....The winning bidder bought it for his 9 year old kid, for Christmas. As corny as this might sound. That makes me happy that a little kid is going to be very happy this Christmas. Hopefully, this will be the gift that the kid remembers for a long time.
