Suggestions on how to get a Wii?

aracko

without paying 450.00 for it on Craigslist.

Toys r us got a shipment in Sunday AM - but you had to be in line starting at 0100 and during that storm you were not going to catch me there. Is it still possible to find one on the shelves if you walk into a store at the right time? Does anyone know of someone who had this luck?

My kids really want one for Christmas - I gotta get it for them - It would be an excellent way to reward them for improving their behavior and schoolwork.

they are still very hard to find. You're going to have to stand in line somewhere early, I think. When Best Buy gets them, people wait in line and they are gone within 20 min of the store opening. How they find out we are getting them in stock, I have no clue.

Websites like CAG get copies of the Sunday for Best Buy, Circuit City, Target, etc. before the Sunday that they go into effect. If the Wii is in the weekly ads, the big box retailers hold any new inventory for that Sunday. That's the reason I have a Wii.

got one last week on gamestop.com

had to buy it in a bundle, but it was well worth it as the stuff that came in the bundle was all stuff on my kid's list.

Paid $480 for the wii system (comes with remote and nunchuck), Mario 8, high school musical sing with mic, wii play (with 2nd remote), extra nunchuk, 1GB memory card, charging station... Add them up individually and it comes to around $480. Had to pay $20 for shipping but that is no big deal.

Anyway, it ended up perfectly for me, not sure if they still have them though...

Walmart has a truck come in every night but they never know if there are any Wii's on it. I got lucky a few times by being at the store at the right time and was able to buy a few. If there are some on the truck, they will usually get them in to the store to sell around 11-11:30 am. I believe Walmart is your best bet and unfortunately calling to ask if they have them doesn't work because whoever you talk to just never knows if they have them or not.

why on earth did you need to buy a "few?"

that crap angers me...

people who buy a few and sell them for a profit are the exact reason there is a shortage.

One for my son. One for my sister-in-law for my nephew, One for my wife's cousin for her daughter, and 1 to sell on ebay. Don't blame me for the supply and demand issue. There are people that live in areas that have no chance of finding them anywhere that are happy to pay more to get it for their children. Why is that a bad thing?

Wait... people (companies) who buy things (inputs) and sell them (outputs) for a profit (net gain) are what is wrong with the system (capitalism!)?

See, I would say the reason there is a shortage is that Nintendo has not made enough.

While in this particular instance Nintendo hasn't been able to up production enough to keep up with the demand, I think their is a valid argument that people simply buying them to sell them on a secondary market certainly isn't helping matters.

I hardly think the average Joe that is taking advantage of the situation and selling a couple to offset the cost and help pay for Christmas is doing any harm compared to the power sellers on EBAY that do this for a living and have sold hundreds. By the way, EBAY is making about $25.00 on each Wii that is sold. Since they now own paypal, they are getting those fees as well. EBAY is making millions on the sale of Wii's.

if a million "average joes" pick up 2 extra ones to scalp on ebay, then that IS a problem...

that is 2 million units that people who want to walk into a store and buy one, can't...

Nintendo dropped the ball by not preparing for the holiday season throughout the year, but the scalpers aren't helping things.

You present an argument of degree which really doesn't hold a lot of water in a moralistic sort of argument.

I think it is wrong to "offset the cost of Xmas" at the expense of another family's Xmas. The money that you make (generally speaking) selling a WII on Ebay comes out of another family's Xmas budget, plus you deprive another local family the opportunity to buy a WII at retail price.

If you want to use the "embrace capitalism" argument -- to each his own, -- but the idea of offsetting your Xmas at the expense of another family's budget, seems very void of what Xmas is supposed to represent -- just my opinion of course.

agreed.

people generally don't care about others anymore, it's all about taking care of your own, screw everyone else these days.

there are probably a LOT of kids out there not getting a wii this christmas because their parents simply can not afford to pay the scalpers prices.

I'm lucky I got mine, but I was never going to pay a cent more than the $250 retail not because I can't afford to, but on principal.

It is just annoying.

I don't feel sorry for any kid that ain't finding a Wii under the tree.

I completely agree. It's not the worst thing that could happen if your child doesn't get a video game system for Christmas. Buy them some books.

Plus, is this really about you and your $250 line in the sand principles, or making your child happy?

Got mine on Ebay for $292 +40 shipping. I'd suggest it to just get it done so you don't have to think about it. Just ensure it is listed as new and in the box.

I think those days are gone for the rest of the season. I just sold my used Wii online for $450.

I guess the point is that if you are not willing to pay extra for it, then don't get it. Obviously there is a secondary market for this as there are currently 15,000 for sale in EBAY and people are paying about $400.00 for each one. What about people that scalp tickets? It's supply and demand people. If Nintendo had enough of these things available, this would not have happened. But every year there is a hot item that you can't find anywhere but on the secondary market. Selling things for a profit has been around for many years now.

I suppose one could use companies that use macros to purchase all available tickets within seconds of release as an example of an ethical business practice. Though I wouldn't. Plus I don't think the ridiculousness that now exists with concert tickets and such is anywhere near the case of what has happened with the Wii. The combination of production line issues that have slowed production with a demand that far exceeded expectations has created an environment that makes it incredibly difficult to find a Wii. If you want one for a reasonable price you'll have to wait outside in line just like everyone else has.
