Bowden asks for Weeks for Cordero

According to Rosenthal,

Emboldened by his acquisition of Milledge, Nationals general manager Jim Bowden is trying to pull off a similar coup in trade talks involving closer Chad Cordero. Bowden repeatedly has asked Milwaukee for second baseman Rickie Weeks, figuring that the Brewers might relent due to their need for a closer. No chance.
Totally agree with DM here, no way would I trade Weeks for Chad Cordero. Bowden is asking for the moon as usual, I think it's safe to say that we can forget about Chad Cordero, he's no longer a viable target.

If Bowden says Rausch and Cordero for Weeks and I think discussions should resume.

In all honesty, he has done a pretty decent job putting some talent on that team.

They will be sporting an OF of Kearns, Willie Mo Pena, and Lastings Milledge.

Ryan Zimmerman is a real nice player at 3b. If they get a player of Weeks calibur to add for a closer, I think he has done a really good job.

Teams like the Nationals - at this stage in the game - dont really have a use for a guy like Cordero. They have time to develop a closer.

If it was Cordero and a decent major league SP for Weeks, then I would think about it. That would allow the Brewers to possibly flip another one of their SPs for something else (like in the rumored Sheets discussions).

I'm not as high on Weeks as many around here, but he still has a pretty high ceiling. You don't trade a young player like Weeks for one relief pitcher you would only have for two years before free agency (if I understand correctly).

This is exactly why you don't ask about Cordero. You ask for Rauch. Seriously though, Rickie?

The sad thing is that there is no one else on the team I would even want besides Rausch and I would doubt that they woud trade their closer and primary set up man. I still wouldnt do Weeks for Cordero and Rausch, they would have to throw in someone like Luid Ayala as well and that is even more unlikely because that is three relievers. They dont have a single starter or position players I want that we could obtain. Of course I would want Zimmerman but that is never going to happen even though it looks like Zimmerman has declined the last two years and despite being touted as a future gold glover had 23 errors last year

Good point(s) fondy, but keep in mind that a team that's going to struggle mightily to win 70 games in 2008 can get more value from the back end of the bullpen by using it to acquire position player/SP help. Might the Nats yearn for Cordero in 2010 if their rebuilding plans go as ordered? Sure, but if he can be a cog that helps net them one or two other key players, he's been more valuable anyway.

Sounds like he just traded for Elijah Dukes also - mlbtraderumors.com

I wonder what he sends to Tampa in return if this is true..........

My guess is Dimitri Young.

Could this mean Kearns may be available?

Good thought, fleehaw. If Hawpe + Fuentes isn't do-able, shooting for Kearns & Rauch (Cordero if you insist on name recognition - I don't) is a good idea. For that duo, I'd ship two of Cappy/Bush/Vargas, but if Bowden's asking for Weeks for Cordero, I think there'd have to be some real re-evaluation for anything to go down. I don't know if two of our tradeable trio would be fair or not, but I really wouldn't want to part with both Bush & Cappy. Vargas + either one wouldn't bother me if we got Kearns & Rauch in return.

Personally, I think some make too big a deal out of the whole "attitude issues" thing. MLB players are big boys...I tend to think most problems get sorted out in the clubhouse. I guess I would like a good example of a bad apple truly derailing a whole team that was actually in contention.

Do we as Brewers fans tend to think about this stuff too often? I mean, I doubt Red Sox or Yankees fans worry about the signing of "problem" players too often, if they are good and can play to win.
