Trade with Red Sox rumored

Manty1

This was posted on TH's blog not by him. Don't know if there is any truth to it at all. But I thought I would share.

A Boston sports radio station is reporting that the Red Sox are very close on a deal that would send LHP John Lester, SS Julio Lugo, mid-level infielder prospect Jed Lowrie and Outfield prospect Brandon Moss to the Milwaukee Brewers for LHP Ben Sheets and SS JJ Hardy.

Here is a link it is towards the bottom.

The report said there was a press conference scheduled for 10pm. Eastern, Central or Mountain time, that time has passed.

I don't buy it. If a rumor out of a Boston sports radio station were reporting this, it would be all over the place by now.

I love rumors reportedly started by a certain city's sports affiliate, almost assuming that the internet doesn't exist. In this day and age when such a rumor is reported is spreads like wild-fire.

Well if Sheets decided to start throwing lefty, we need to re-evaluate how we deal with him, I say immediate extension. I don't believe that this rumor is remotely true, but why would anyone even think they could make this up and have people believe them. Not even close.

Hardy is pretty close to a "no way" trade candidate, even moreso than Weeks, and probably almost equal to Hart, Braun, and Fielder. He's been looked at as a part of the future even when he was struggling mightily. Take out the Lugo/Hardy swap, I can at least believe discussions took place.

I think out of everyone in the Brewers' young core, Hardy will be the first to be dealt.

His defense is good at short, for the balls he can get to - offensively he's good for a SS, but not spectacular. He's going to be among the first to reach free agency, so it's going to be interesting to see how they handle his first year of arby.

along the thinking of this thread, there's no way this "rumor" is true - this reeks of a Boston fan's pipe dream if they lose out on the Santana trade sweepstakes, since both Lester and Crisp are currently rumored to be trading chips for Santana

I like Lester a lot and looking at this guy Lowrie's numbers, he seems to be much better than a mid-level prospect (he was 45th overall pick in 2005) with superb on base skills. What's unusual about him is that he was an All American 2B at Stanford but has played mostly SS as a pro. You don't see that too often. The other guy Moss is a high strikeout guy in his mid twenties. The talent Boston is offering isn't that bad but Lugo's got a real big contract.

Maybe there is big interest in Boston because the Yankees are supposed to be getting close on Santana. I'd leave Hardy out of the deal completely. Sheets for Lester and Lowrie might be interesting.

That's a Boston fan fantasy, IMO, though I'd say there's a chance that there could be a smaller deal for Sheets with some of those players. But Lugo's value right now is in the negative numbers and including him in no way makes the Brewers willing to deal their starting shortstop.

The rest of the guys have some value, thought. Moss and Lowrie are decent prospects who were in AAA and could be ready in the near future. Not exactly Melvin's style, though, and neither really seems to fit the current team needs, unless other moves are coming. Still they could both be solid starters (Moss might be a 4th OF rather than a starter, but hits lefty and has some offensive and defensive value).

Lester, OTOH, is exactly the kind of guy Melvin likes to pick up...major league proven, not much service time, would be cheap and under control for a while.
