WASH signs Ray King... Latest: Nats purchase contract (reply #33)

Didn't Sarafate just get suspended for HGH, steroids or whatever? I don't think it's much of a loss if you want my opinion. (for what that's worth)

I'm pretty sure it was "Dan Serafini" and not "Dennis Sarfate".

reported on the nationals' website:

Reliever Ray King arrived in camp in the best shape of his life. He lost 23 pounds and hardly has a gut. King decided to stay away from junk food and sodas and start working out with son. He said instead of going to In-N-Out Burger, King ate salmon instead.

King decided to lose weight after watching some video tapes of himself dating back to 2003, when he was with the Braves. He felt that being overweight changed his mechanics, which prevented him from making better pitches.

"I had a reality check," King said. "I felt I had to better myself physically. I feel good. I look back and I say, 'What if.' You can't dwell on the past. The only thing you could try to do is change it and see what you can do about the future. The main goal was to try to drop these pounds and see if it could make a difference."

that sucks, i thought that he should have been back, if Yost would use him as a lefty specialist, he could be effective, but instead he used him in full innings last year.

Agreed. He can be a very effective lefty specialist. But should not pitch full innings.

Robert had a great idea a couple years ago that writers make all these stories in the cold months where they live, and then insert the names when they are in Florida or Arizona, out playing golf.

Every player shows up after being in the best shape of his life (after eating chicken/fish and working out), 20 pounds lighter, with the nagging injury that bothered him the previous year healed, "has something to prove" after a disappointing campaign, and so on.

I saw Ray on espn a couple of days ago during a televised game. He was just sitting in the bullpen, and not the topic at the time.

I said to my girlfriend "Ray King must have lost 50 pounds! We should try to sign him!"

He has lost alot of his gut and his face has slimmed an incredible amount. For once this wasn't just a canned story waiting for the next fat redemption project.
