Rosenthal rumors on Fox Sports Radio

I am going to just skip over all the other teams stuff because the Santana stuff makes me want to throw my radio out the window.

Here is the Brewers stuff:

The Rolen to Milwaukee stuff was a major topic of conversation. It is Rolen and either Randy Flores or Ryan Franklin to the Brewers for Chris Capuano, Kevin Mench, and TGJ

Brewers have inquired to the Dodgers about Broxton but the Dodgers seem to think that he is worth one of the untouchables.

Geoff Jenkins is going to have to choose between less money and less years for a chance to win with San Diego and more years and more money with Tampa.

Madtown, was there any mention of the cards picking up any part of rolen's salary in that. I'd do Flores and Rolen, for cappy, mench, and gwynn.

I'd hope Jenks goes to San Deigo, only cause he would come to town once and he'd have a chance to go to the playoffs which he deserves to go.

Take the Rolen deal now! Interesting about Broxton, hope they don't give up an untouchable for him. Not worth it imo.

Seems like a really good trade for both sides.

We move Braun to LF. (Problem fixed) We put Rolen at 3B (Defense fixed) And we add another RP (With Riske, problem fixed)

I really think Capuano will rebound this year. But his salary is going up, and we have Villanueva, Parra and Gallardo for the future. So at some point he will move on. Mench isn't worth much to me. (Especially with an OF of Hall, Hart and Braun) And Gwynn seems like a great kid - but I can't stand his game. (A singles hitter who strikes out)

The money absolutely should be a holdup, this could be a great move, but it could also be an enormous disaster. If Rolen can't produce, we're likely to deal away a solid player when these guys start rolling through arby. I wouldn't do it, unless the Cards assume some of the financial risk.

I thought Mench's name would show up here, and I had wondered about Gwynn too. The Cards had been linked to Mench before, and he would serve no purpose in Milwaukee if Braun takes an outfield spot.

There's some urgency on this one, the arby deadline is upon us.

Oh, one other thing, I think I'd take Franklin. Flores looks like a guy who has a job because he's left-handed, and he fits in the suit.

the great thing about this trade is that we don't give up that much and we address needs. I also think that capuano will bounce back but we have enough depth to absorb the loss. Gwynn is over valued i believe and mench really doesn't have a future with the team. You can move Braun to left. Gross could be the 4th OF and then you just need to find a backup outfielder. You can also let Dillon be the 5th backup, and that would allow you to find another utility infielder. Maybe even bring back Cirillo. It makes us stronger and gives the cards pieces they are looking for.

St Louis 590AM reports that it will be a Capuano for Anthony Reyes swap -

EDIT - I MISREAD - he reports that it COULD be.............

From MLBTRADERUMORS.com

Cardinals Sign Cesar Izturis

According to Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cards have signed shortstop Cesar Izturis to a one-year deal. The amount is unknown, I'll guess $3.5MM. You know the story with Izturis - anemic bat, stellar glove. He'll offer a bit more than Brendan Ryan would've and doesn't cost much. If John Mozeliak finds something better it will be easy to pull the plug.

This also signals the end of David Eckstein as a Cardinal, as expected.

Strauss adds that the team has "strong interest" in acquiring the Brewers' Chris Capuano. That's a reasonable target and a nice buy-low idea. The Brewers would like to unload him given their starter surplus and his rising salary. In a radio interview on 590AM, Post-Dispatch columnist Rick Hummel indicated it could be an even swap for Anthony Reyes.

What do we know about Rolen's health? Assuming his medical prognosis for a comeback is solid, I would love this deal -- he could really help, and his skills are sufficiently balanced that he's a fairly good risk to hold value into his 30s. I like Capuano and think he will bounce back, but I'd say that's about the right price for calling him expendable.

Neither Flores nor Franklin excites me much, but another BP arm is another BP arm. It might be a little more fun to roll the dice on Franklin -- there's no GOOD reason to think his absurd WHIP from last year is sustainable, but he's only been back in relief for two seasons, so it's always possible he has figured something out. I think at this point I'd also prefer a RHP who can stand up under Ned's abuse to another lower-inning LHP.

Greg.

I'd like to know how many of the other Rosenthall rumors have come to fruition . I've heard and read a lot of sportscasters speculating on what a team might do and what might be good for that team. most of the trades that have happened were ones nobody talked about at all. The Young trade and Milledge trade were definitely under the rumor radar.

I could see the brewers acquiring rolen knowing they have Counsell to back him up. I highly doubt hal l would be asked t o fill in for Rolen. The Cardinals definitely are looking for starting pitching, so acquiring Cappy makes sense. The cards have a new GM and new GMs always like to make big moves their first year. Edmunds is getting old, and the cards were looking for a future starting CF. their farm system is rather bad. Gwynn could fill their void at center, and mench is a productive bat.

I would have no problem trading cappy, gwynn and mench for Rolen. I'd be extremely happy if they threw in flores or franklin. I like franklin a lot. There are more productive third basemen out there. but for this package of players, the brewers would acquire a quality third baseman and not have to give up anybody from their future core of players. Cappy, mench and gwynn don't really have a future for the brewers and can easily be replaced.

Wow - sign me up for Ryan Franklin yesterday. He's one I was hoping the Crew would snatch up in FA, but he ended up re-signing with StL. Make that deal happen. Franklin would be a great arm to add to the 'pen. I'd rather the SP traded be Vargas, and I'd like to know more about the impact Rolen's shoulder problems have heading forward, but initially this looks like a really good deal.
