centerfielder rumors

this line cracks me up:

"However, they do have Kevin Mench and Tony Gwynn, and both would make for a nice platoon in the outfield if all else fails."

Mench, a nice platoon?

This guy should be WW bait imo.

Mench did make a nice platoon player when he played strictly against lefties. Gwynn not so much.

People like to rip on Mench, but bottom line:

2007 -- .314/.343/.558 (.901) vs. LHP

Career -- .305/.361/.563 (.924) vs. LHP

That more or less makes him an ideal platoon partner. There's no reason in my opinion not to keep him on board.

I rip on Mench because he is fat and slow and a below average outfielder. That is enough for me to not want him around.

not to emntion, I do not like the idea of platoons, go with a guy and let him play...

Yeah, well, we're not the Yankees. We don't have enough resources to get ourselves a top notch everyday player at every position. Platooning can be a good way to get great everyday production out of two players that do not cost a fortune to obtain. I think a Gross/Mench combo would OPS in the low to mid .800s with relative ease if used properly (admittedly, a potential problem with Yost). I'm not suggesting that this is the ideal option, I'd rather have an everyday guy too, but I don't see anything wrong with this approach if that's what it comes down to. There may not be great cost-effective options available to go after.

He is neither particularly fat, nor particularly slow. And he's a pretty decent outfielder. He also kills LHP. He has his limitations as a player, but you seem to have missed them.

Angry much?

I wouldn't get too worked up about any of it. The Brewers are looking for CF, LF, RF, 3B and RP. They aren't going to fill all of the positions. Part of what makes Melvin a quality GM is that he turns over all of the stones.

Mr Mench where's a size 8 bucket. For that reason alone he deserves some split time in LF.

I'm not too crazy about his Eagles tattoo, but at least he's loyal

Oh, yeah, I do like his mashing of lefties, too.

my opinion, and that is what this message board is all about, is that he is fat and slow. From watching him in the field, he is no more than an average outfielder at best. He is slow to the ball, mis-judges fly-balls on occasion, and has an average arm.

dude, let it go, all the "you are negative" crap is stupid. How many comments have you made in the last week about my "negative" posts?

I have my opinions on the brewers, sorry if you see things all rosey, I don't.

I want this team to move forward, not stay the same or get worse.

Kendall is a band-aid. His better days are far behind him and his addition does not excite me in any way.

Riske, if signed as our closer is a step backwards. He has had no success in that roll, and I want no part of that here. If he is signed as a set-up man, I can live with that, but not as our closer.

I am far from angry...

yeah, you do seem pretty negative. even to me - and i'm pretty negative.

anyway, what i've learned over the past year or so is that MLBtraderumors.com is completely unreliable and I believe most of the content is just completely made up or speculated.

Pretty sure most rumors anywhere are going to be merely speculation most of the time.

Right, but AT's point was that he's not fat, and that your opinion in that sense isn't accurate. I can agree with you that he's slow, and that he's 'not great but not bad' in the OF, but not that he's fat.

Also, that 7 of the 16 posts are by the same poster, and are often one liners, sometimes literally one minute apart. There is an edit function, so if something occurs to you 30 seconds after you hit 'add reply,' you can add it to the same post.

Keep bf.net beautiful and all that.

looking at the link of the original post, it makes me wonder what Melvin's true opinion of Billy Hall is. Does he like him? Does he think he made a mistake switching him to CF? Is he thinking of switching him once more? Half of the rumors about the brewers either involve the brewers acquiring a reilf pitcher or a center fielder. I realize most of these rumors, for the most part are pure speculation, but they must be based on something. melvin has come forward and said he was at least talking to several different clubs about different players. And a lot of proposed deals seem to involve Hall. I've made it known, I'm not a big Hall fan, but I thought Melvin liked him. Could Melvin have had an interest in Jones as a possible left fielder ala the Reds moving Griffey out of CF?

I'm also a little disapointed that the blog only mentioned two other possible names in Cameron and Patterson. A couple of days ago as part of a discussion of centerfielders, I provided about 10 names of centerfielders who would be available in either free agency or via a trade that I thought the Brewers could acquire without giving up a top prospect or core player. I forgot to inlude Pods as a player who could conceivably come back to the brewers to play center. I'm kind of surprised/disapointed the blog didn't include Rowland, Taguchi, Tavaras, Jeremy Reed or lofton as other possibilities.

You guys do realize that this is just some guys blog and that he took the information (that we already knew) of Melvin contacting Boras about Andruw Jones, then said "now that we know they are looking for an outfielder who can produce, here is a list" and then proceeded to name two people, one who stinks outloud (Patterson) and another who recently failed a drug test and is suspended 25 games. And that's it, that's the list. It seems this blogger either ran out of time or interest, or both, halfway through making crap up. Just for good measure he tosses in a guy with a blown out ACL, a guy who strikes out a ton with back-to-back terrible years, and a cuban defector.

Of all the trade rumor sites Ive seen this one is about the worst.

I just want to say welcome back turborickey, and all things considered he has been consistently anti-platoon since the days of Rich Becker.

lol

this is true...

I'm assuming you used to post on the old espn boards igor, did you use a different name then?

Jose Guillen just signed a 3 year deal with the Royals, and Gathright seems to have emerged as the starting CF. What does everyone think about Dejesus. Even in a down year last year he had a OBP over .350 and it was his worst season so far. He can run a little, is good outfield defender and is a left-handed bat that we could slot into the two hole. He could take over center and move Hall to third or Left and improve the D. I think it would be a good buy low move.
