MiLB.com -- Baseball's Top 50 Prospects

Mass Haas

I think the key here is that the list is voted on by scouts...they're coming from a certain point of view, which is quite different than, say, statistical analysts or managers. The Brewers have an interesting system right now in that there's different players for different tastes...

Not to mention MiLB has Esbocar in the Top 50. He is pretty one dimensional. (Whiz with the leather - poor with the bat)

Maybe you know this already, but that's not what is typically meant by one-dimensional. Scouts tend to think in terms of five tools when it comes to position players: defense, throwing, speed, hitting (for average), power. Escobar lacks power, to be sure, but he rates well in the other categories...in potential as well as in current ability. (You could maybe argue hitting for average, but he did hit .325 in the FSL.) Laporta, in contrast, is a slugger...he doesn't even hit many singles, has limited defensive value, little speed. Guy's gotta hit a lot or he has zero value. He also is arguably closer to his ceiling than Escobar, and almost two years older.

(Happy 21st birthday to Alcedis this weekend, by the way...somebody buy him a drink!)
