It's getting old

I am growing tired of threads turning into Ned Yost bashing or simply displaying pictures and comments afterwards. I believe there is a lot of posters here who have a ton of information and thoughts that make brewerfan very useful and informative and yet at the same time fun. I do think that lately there has been Ned bashing in too many threads that have nothing to do with him and pictures leading to jokes that have nothing to do with the subject. I don't want to sound rude, but if a new poster would do this it'd be locked or moved. Why do we allow certain threads to go way off topic and just make fun of things that have nothing to do with the topic?

I'm by no means a big Ned Yost fan, but I don't understand how so many threads start into a bash Ned in some form and continue.

I agree with you. For some people, voicing their displeasure with the current manager has turned into more of an obsession or even a sport than a legitimate point of discussion. During the season, I had been more on the ball with steering conversation away from repetitive, but admittedly, have slacked off due to working on the new version of the site.

I think the people who have turned hating on Yost into an art form know who they are. Brewerfan needs to remain a site where people are respectful of other people's opinions and steer away from the mob mentality we've seen in some of the threads.

OK -- I'll bite...

JJ Said :Once again, I love how the pictures in this post make this discussion less worthwhile. This really is not helping the discussion and the pics of Baker and Yost aren't needed here at all. Here is the middle school humor striking again.

I think it is very egocentric to think that your displeasure needs to be voiced in the manner that you do, sometimes it comes off as abrasive, as others liked the pictures.

And then you say this:

If that's the post of the year, I'm guessing what actually happens on the baseball field has no impact to those who post here.

I think it's funny that the guy you are referring to here actually makes his living on the field. I can understand that some people might find that picture of Dusty Baker not funny -- I guess I don't see why that needs to be squawked about though.

The pics are funny, but have no purpose here IMO

Dusty is the manager of the Reds, Yost the Brewers -- both have checkered histories with pitching. I would concede that it is not rigidly topical -- however to claim that they have no purpose is a bit of a reach.

I am not certain why Brian posted the picture of Dusty.... Here is my guess:

1.) Someone made a post stating that the Reds were far from the playoffs

2.) I offered the idea that the Reds were closer than people may think.

3.) Brian posted the picture of Dusty in response to my post -- My interpretation was that Brian was pointing out to me that Dusty is managing the Reds and that puts the Reds in a less than optimal position -- Dusty gets shredded here a lot.

4.) I responded with a picture of Yost, which was my way of saying that we don't have a HOF manager either.

I searched through that thread -- and the only time Yost was mentioned was in reference to bullpen -- there was no bashing.

If that picture of Yost, in the context of the Dusty picture, is construed as Yost-bashing, then I am at a loss.

Seriously JJ, if you (or anyone) have a problem with what or how I post -- drop me a message and I will do my best to resolve things.

I'm not sure that I was even engaged in Ned hating in the thread in question. I thought FTJ's response to Brian's Dusty picture was funny and I commented so.

I guess I'm not sure what's wrong with that? If these forums are only a place to humorlessly discuss all things baseball and stats...then I'm out.

I get enough of that stuff in my other job.

It's a fan site for crying out loud! I understand the desire to uphold a certain level of decorum but I don't think this comes near the line. It's a great site, the best even, but sometimes I think we start to take things too seriously.

I come here to discuss baseball with fairly knowledgeable and humorous fans. It's light and enjoyable.

JJ my suggestion to you is that if you're that hard core about your baseball that you don't want any humor thrown in; get an internship with a MLB or Minor league team.

You'll work for nothing and you won't have time or energy for laughing.

I don't think it is anywhere near as bad as it was up until a month after the season, but it still seems like there are times when people can't resist the urge to take a shot at Yost whenever there is a thread about pitching. Yost seems like one of those topics where there are strong feelings both ways and most of the feelings are based on preferences.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

I agree. It's not nearly as vicious as it was during the season, and it's a lot more lighthearted. I just want to make sure that threads don't get hijacked.

My concerns on the issue are just a warning, not an indication that I'm ready to hand out strikes or anything. I do see the yost-hating ramping up, and I just want to make sure that any anti-Yost comments aren't repetitive (like they've been in the past), or off-topic.

I just think threads that poke on Yost should be limited to threads about Ned. I don't really have a problem with it if it's in the right thread. I don't want to read a thread that has nothing to do with Ned and have it filled with things about him.

I undertand why Ned is an easy target and that's fine if you don't like him. I'm not his biggest fan, but I don't think he needs to be brought up in threads that have nothing to do with him.

I didn't mean to point you out as much FTJ - but this has happened before and some responses have been if you don't like it don't come here. I think that's the wrong response. If there's a Ned thread, fill it up with whatever you want. I personally am not interested in reading anything else about Ned until the season starts. It is what it is...he'll be back in 2008 (at least start the season as the manager).

I know people get criticized at their jobs, but I personally don't find the need for Ned to be mentioned in threads not about him. Make Ned threads...that's fine.

To be honest, I think the sequence that FTJ posted was about right, and doesn't seem off topic at all. If instead of pictures, someone has said "well they do have Dusty managing..", and someone had responded "Well we have Ned, so are we better off?" would you still have a problem? Because that seems perfectly legit to me. Yes, as a proverbial straw, perhaps it's too much, but on its own merits, it's a legimate discussion point.

Threads haven't inevitably turned to Yost like they have in the past. I think it's the Melvin thread where I posted something about how I think Melvin sometimes gets the wrong players for certain roles and it ends up getting blamed on Yost. I was hesitant to do so because in the past that would have started a firestorm of Yost debate and I didn't want that. I was happy to see the comment didn't go in a direction I didn't want it to go.

I personally don't think Ned has anything to do with Cordero signing with the Reds unless I missed something. I know there are different views that can come back to the manager, but I think that it's a long off-season and we don't need Ned brought up in threads that IMO have nothing to do with him.

I think the pictures weren't needed by any means and the comments that followed weren't needed either. I'm not saying that it's not funny or that everything has to be serious here, but I think it belongs in a thread that can make fun of Ned/or criticize him...not in a thread about Cordero signing with the Reds. Just MO.

I don't want to read a thread that has nothing to do with Ned and have it filled with things about him.

First off -- there is only a couple of mentions of Ned in the 15 pages of the thread -- none of it I think could be construed as bashing by a reasonable person.

Secondly Ned is our manager, and it is hard if not impossible to leave him out of discussions that include gameday decisions such as lineup and bullpen handling.

I undertand why Ned is an easy target and that's fine if you don't like him. I'm not his biggest fan, but I don't think he needs to be brought up in threads that have nothing to do with him.

Of course you know I think that Ned Yost is an obstacle for the Brewers to clear -- that being said -- I still want to participate in discussions that involve lineups, pitching and defensive alignment -- If I say Ryan Braun is a poor defensive player, that should not be construed as bashing, rather a fair assessment of our roster -- with all the warts. I would rather participate in frank discussions that includes our teams weaknesses rather than gloss over and hand wave.

I didn't mean to point you out as much FTJ - but this has happened before and some responses have been if you don't like it don't come here. I think that's the wrong response.

Perhaps it is the wrong response -- However, there is a middle ground which allows a reader to do nothing. While I don't think you should leave, I guess I don't see why you feel obligated to squawk -- as a side note I was sincere that if you do get offended drop me a PM, and I will do my best to hear you out.

I know people get criticized at their jobs, but I personally don't find the need for Ned to be mentioned in threads not about him.

Perhaps here is the crux of our problem. You seem to equate bashing and critique --- I see them as 2 entirely different things. ANY acquisition that is made this off-season is going to generate a lot criticism from people here based on Ned's history. If the Brewers sign Kenny Lofton tomorrow you can be assured that there would be a lot of discussion of how Ned will use him in the OF, and where he would bat in the lineup -- that is simply unavoidable, some people would be critical of Ned batting Hardy second, etc. -- If that constitutes "bashing" to you -- then I would recommend you strap on a helmet and a nutcup.

Now if people are continually saying things like "Ned is a moron", or "Ned is the new lead singer for Van Halen" then I agree, that does not need to be in many different threads -- and if I do do that you can certainly alert me to that.

Ned is intertwined in the web that is Brewer baseball.

Ned manages the Brewers -- His bullpen lost 2 pitchers in the last 2 weeks -- I think it is very reasonable to want to discuss how Ned would handle our BP in its current state of affairs.

Again -- just about any acquisition is going to revolve around Ned's implementation, or Ned's dealing with the hole generated.

It has to deal with Ned in regards to how he handles the bullpen. I don't think posting pictures making the managers look silly has anything all to do with the Cordero signing. There wasn't much talk of Ned it was more putting up pictures and making him look foolish. IMO this has nothing to do with Cordero. How do the pictures have anything to do with it?

Also, I think the pictures and that distract from actual discussion on the thread. The thread has now had good posts after I made my comment. It is generating some ideas and thoughts and not pictures of Ned or Dusty. I don't see where the pictures have a place in the post. We can look at how I said it has nothing to do with Ned, but I think we all know I'm talking about the need to put the pictures up.

I know you would like Braun moved. I understand that and I think he should stay at 3B. I respect your opinion and have no problem with your opinion. I haven't seen posts that make Braun look silly or anything like that. That is the difference here.

No, you are probably right, but this is probably also where you should loosen it up a couple of notches.

The thread has now had good posts after I made my comment.

Sure -- the post had 13 pages of good posts before your post. If you think that your posts improved the quality of the thread, then that is way more egocentric than considering your displeasure paramount enough to interrupt the current stream of the thread.

I don't see where the pictures have a place in the post.

They were funny and added some color to the topic. It made someone laugh enough to comment to the effect it was "post of the year" -- If someone gets a good laugh out of it -- I am quite content. To each his own, but I found Brian's post funny, and it probably entertained me more than any of the analytical stuff that was going on. Personally I love BFnet because of its semi-serious approach.

I agree with this...but what does that have to do with the pictures?

You seem to hop back and forth between squawking about the pictures and Ned Yost critique. I was trying to illustrate that there is a big difference between being critical of a player's ability (Mench v RHers, Braun v Groundballs) and bashing them (Mench is stupid, Braun watches Waterworld).

So now I am squawking? Thanks. I think you're try to relate Ned to everything baseball related (which makes sense because he is the manager), but the pictures have nothing to do with the baseball aspect. I pointed out that the pictures seemed to be making fun of Ned, which I don't think was appropriate in the thread.

I don't think my post changed the discussion, but it's a lot easier to read thoughts about the bullpen, etc than pictures that are IMO making fun of Ned, etc. That is what I pointed out and the posts you have made here relate to how Ned is important to the team -- which he is.

As far as bashing them, I think you've posted enough things on Ned that I don't think merits another mention (ie the Yost and couch thing). I don't think you can post facts (which you do a good job at and you back up your opinion) and then put posts up to make fun of coaches or the players and expect it to be well received. This is just my opinion. You have a lot of good thoughts on the board, but I think coming back with how Ned is important to the club and relates to everything doesn't make it necessary for posters to continually put up pictures of Ned or rip on him.

I tend to find that pictures break up the monotony of a thread. That's sorta what gives Brewerfan its character, at least to me. But I could be wrong.

People on the site need to keep in mind the line between good humor and serious discussion. The site needs, and has, both. Sometimes they get out of balance, but all in all the posters (especially the ones that have been around for awhile, number of posts notwithstanding) here do a good job of keeping things both light and on-topic. The pictures of Ned in that thread didn't really bother me, and they didn't add much of anything to the thread. We all have different tastes... sometimes you just have to learn to gloss over what you feel isn't important.

I do agree with you. It's not that I hate humor or think that it shouldn't be a part of this. I could do with out the silly pictures of Ned. I know there are threads that have pics and change it up and that's fine. I just think the Ned thing has ran its course.

I'm not saying everything here has to change I just think maybe we should be aware that the Ned bashing (this is just my opinion, but the Ned on the couch, the Ned has bone spurs in his brain, etc) really aren't needed from now all the way to opening day. It's just my opinion.

This is overstated. Very rarely do you see pictures of Ned in threads making fun of him. I think that was the first picture of Yost I posted.

Awesome -- perhaps you could try to gloss over things you don't care for rather than insist for anything to change.

I agree with Toby, and others, on this. I guess I think the pictures can be humorous. Also, it's the offseason. There's not a heck of a lot going on, so something has to pass the time. I'd rather look at Dale Sveum's yearbook photo than read one of the 25 threads about relievers that are sprouting up like wildfire.
