Will Turnbow be back?

JB
He was horrible for us last year, blowing numerous games. I would love it if we can find a taker for him...even if we just cut him, who cares, really? Do people think he'll be back?

Don't exaggerate. Turnbow wasn't horrible, at least when you take the year as a whole into account. Heck, he was one of the key reasons the Brewers got off to a fast start. Mediocre is probably the better description, mixing periods of effectiveness and, extreme, ineffectiveness.

I agree that he's not a 70 inning setup man or closer. His control seemingly breaks down over time/use. He'd probably be fine if he was used in the role that Matt Wise should be doing, if his shoulder wasn't so balky. 50 IP or so a year in the 6th or 7th, relatively low pressure situations.

He's been horrible for a year and a half.

Sure his numbers are skewed in that he often was good but really, really bad 6 or 7 times, but those really, really bad outings when secure leads are blown are deflating to the team. Not to mention two straight years when as the game got bigger, so did the frequency of his blowups.

He should be gone.

Turnbow was horrible after the Phillies game in which he single-handedly blew a 6-2 lead.

He was awesome before that fateful day in late May. The bottom-line is that he plain stunk after that. Don't have the stats, but I know this was the case.

I'd rather see McLung get a shot before Turnbow. He might not be any better but at least he's someone different blowing leads. Looking at his log, 7 times he gave up 3 or more runs in less than a inning. He walked 46 in 68 innings. That is bad.

On a side note, living in Chicago I get the perspective of non-Brewer fans. Turnbow has no respect from the Chicago media. They see him for what he his, kind a goofy looking guy who is more likely than not to blow up in key games. If he's the Brewer closer, expect most pundits to have Brewers in 4th place at best.

Yeah, because that Chicago media is right on with all of their analysis. Plain and simple, Turnbow is an average reliever. He isn't the best guy out there, nor is anyone claiming he is. He gets through a lot of innings without giving up runs, and then collapses horribly in games where he does give up runs. I think a lot of this has to do with him being overworked at times. And who cares what the pundits think, the pundits are more often wrong than right.

I'm not saying I don't want us to go out and get something, but your saying he is worthless because the media in Chicago says he's worthless, seems pretty ridiculous to me.

Why is Turnbow as the closer such a bad idea? coming into the 9th inning with nobody on and only 3 outs to get is the best situation for him. You don't want your best reliever tied to the closer position. You want your best reliever as a stopper. The guy who comes in when the other team starts a rally. Closers are used improperly across all of MLB. The best thing is if we get a really good reliever, but Turnbow gets the "closer's" job because he has the longest tenure. Losing Cordero can be a blessing in disguise if you ask me. Next best thing would be "closer by commitee."

Turnbow's ERA when brought in with nobody on base was under 2 for the season.

If no other option presented itself, I'd rather have Turnbow than someone like McClung or another 4A rummy give it a go.

Turnbow was overworked last year by Yost, and that may well have had something to do with his lack of control.

Ned Yost.

I know you hate Yost, but given Cordero's useage last year you are going to tell me that there is a better way to use Turnbow. You would rather have a better reliever put in as closer and not used when he is needed most?

Great point. It just kinda seems to be the way he functions better. I'd like to see Fuentes or Cordero or Rauch, etc. brought in to help fill out the bullpen. Maybe we can't find the "Bullpen Ace" per se, but I'm sure the 'pen can be managed better than it was in 2007.

I know what you are getting at -- Right now though we still have Ned Yost, and Turnbow is probably our best reliever.

If we end up with Turnbow as our best reliever by the start of next season I will be very dissapointed, and a little surprised. I don't see our reliever useage changing much without a clear mandate from upper management, ala Oakland. Look at the money Cordero got. That is just crazy money. Is he worth more than twice as much as Linebrink? I doubt it. As long as the difference between somebody with saves and one without means that much money, I don't see things changing much.

crewcrazy,

thank you for posting the game log for others to see. I remembered (others have too) that overall he was just fine--but when it rained it poured.

Here's the question I have for you, though. How many of those games when he was charged with 0 runs/earned runs did he allow an inherited runner to score? In other words, how many times did he come into games and didn't allow a run to score at all, regardless if it was charged to him or another pitcher?

I'm not disagreeing with anything you have said -- I am very OK with Linebrink sailing on, and while I would

feel good about CoCo returning, I understand that it's a lot of coin.

Mota is really sticking in my craw, that's the one I am struggling with.

BTW-- I think Mota qualifies as one of those "out of LF acquisitions" -- I dpn't recall anyone here

suggesting him as a target.

The last time Turnbow was the closer was 2006.

In July, August, and September of that year, he allowed 30 earned runs in 20 2/3 innings and was 1 for 15 in save opportunities. He forced the trade of Carlos Lee by singlehandidly taking the Brewers out of the race that year.

Nothing he did in 2007 (when Yost had to stop using him the last 2 weeks) convinces me that he won't revert to that again in the closer's role. That it's even being discussed makes me nuts.
