Here's Rosenthal's story:

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7480854

The Cincinnati Reds, making their first big acquisition of the Dusty Baker era, have reached a preliminary agreement with free-agent closer Francisco Cordero on a four-year, $46-million contract, major-league sources say.

The deal, which is pending a physical, includes a club option for a fifth year that can bring the total value of the package to $57 million.

That's insane.

Here is some initial "delirious with joy" comments from Reds fans on the 4/46 deal....if the Brewers offered 4/42, our offer was right in the ballpark, and tells a little bit about where Cordero's head is at.

I know I may seem a bit addled, but this makes me somewhat happy....I think Cordero is going to struggle mightily in the bandbox. It is going to get into his head, like his road struggles, and then snowball.

So, do the Reds now undo that acquisition by dealing Dunn citing money issues? It wouldn't surprise me a bit.

In this market, $11.5 million a year isn't shocking for a very good closer. I was always figuring around 4 years, $44 million would be about what he would go for. Heck, I like that deal better than the Linebrink deal.

Good luck to him and lucky for us. No closer is worth this type of money. Cordero was lights out for us last year but what is to stop him from reverting to the Cordero from Texas? Closers are a different breed. I compare them to goalies in hockey. Nice guys but something isn't quite right there either.

We obviously need to make a trade at this point but we seem to have managed fine the past few years without blowing the budget on a closer.

Cordero's confidence might drop quickly after he finds out he only gets one save chance every 5 days when Harang pitches and only gets to close for the other 4 once ever 2-3 starts each. That and when he realizes Dusty Baker is now there and his arm is likely to fall off within a year.

We should trade Inman and Garrison for...oh, wait...they did? Never mind.

Trading for the other Cordero in Washington makes quite a bit of sense now.

Can't wait to hear the boos for CoCo next season. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif

Definitely have mixed emotions on this one.

Positive-it shows we have some money to spend and won't be afraid to do so. The Crew is not done dealing, for sure. Also, two more picks; albeit a second rounder and sandwich.

Negative-You lose one of the Top 7 closers in the Majors overall.

Well, here's hoping Doug has some ideas about making sure we have enough able bodies in the pen. I'm starting to get a very bad feeling about it.

Right now our pen, baring any moves, could end up being:

CL - Bush

SU - Turnbow

SU - Wise

Lefty - Shouse

MR- Mota

MR/LR - Parra

Lefty 2 - Choate

Bush I think might make a decent late inning reliever. However Turnbow and Wise should not be in the Set Up role, we need to find a way to bump all of the pitchers above, down a notch or two. A Riske signing and a trade of Capuano for Fuentes (moving Bush back into the rotation) might be a bit better.

CL - Fuentes

SU - Riske

SU - Turnbow

MR - Wise

MR - Mota

Lefty - Shouse

Lefty/LR - Parra

I thought I had read that the Reds didn't have much to spend, apparently they are putting all their eggs into the F. Cordero basket. Yikes.

Given Cordero's performance away from The Keg last year, I don't know how well this will work out for the Reds.

Probably very well when they visit the keg.

The Reds other pitchers would actually have to give the Reds a lead for us to see CoCo. Wiith our offense I like our odds of not having to deal with him to much. I am also a little iffy of Cordero going to the GAB. He didnt give up a ton of homers last year but I would still be concerned

Well, here's maybe a brightside to this falling through. The Brewers are in need of more than just one RP, if we resigned Cordero, we'd basically be standing pat from last year's dreadful bullpen. If we can somehow use his salary to bring in two to three solid RPs, we might have a better pen, just without the dominant closer.

Riske, Herges, Fuentes (in a trade for Capuano). Go get those three Doug!

I have full confidence in Melvin that he will trade for JJ Putz, Joe Nathan, Huston Street, and sign Eric Gagne. After that I think we will be set. For extra security I wouldnt mind Bobby Jenks for the 6-7th inning role

Way to lighten the load, haha. I wish we could get 1 of them though.

what is to stop him from reverting to the Cordero from Texas

Other than one month, his time in Texas was pretty good.

After the Rivera deal, I figured someone would throw over $10MM/year at him, so I was skeptical that we would be able to sign him. The deal the Reds gave him is more expensive than any reliever in history prior to this offseason (IIRC, the previous high was Billy Wagner's 4 yr/ $43MM), so I'm not surprised the Brewers wouldn't go that high. Therefore, I'm mostly upset that our two Type A free agents went to teams that only had to give up second rounders. Now, if we were to sign a type A, we wouldn't have one first round pick.

As I said in another thread, now that the "premier" free agent relievers have set the market at a record high level, all the second-tier guys will be signed for way too much money, much like Lilly, Suppan, etc broke the bank after Zito and Schmidt's signings last year. I'll stick to my guns, and say our left fielder and bullpen will come from trading some combination of Bush, Vargas, Capuano and prospects. Maybe throw in a Mench for good measure.
