Hall for Nathan?

shelmark
But you could still trade for Nathan and sign Fuentes after the season is over. Nathan would obviously be an A free agent, Fuentes is a question mark.

Maybe this whole Santana to the Yankees thing will include the Crew.

Example:

Yankees get Santana, Sheets

Brewers get Nathan, Melky, One of the Twins young starters (Garza, Baker, Slowey, Bonzer)

Twins get Hall, Alcedis Escobar, Joba Chamberlain, Cano

Don't crucify, just grasping at straws.

If I am reading this correctly, the Twins are trading Santana, Nathan and a young SP and all they are getting back is Hall, Escobar, Chamberlin and Cano. The Yankees probably couldnt get Santana for Cano, Joba and Melky, but in this deal they get him AND Sheets. I know you are grasping at straws and all, but there is just way too much going on here.

Well actually if you look at the recent Santana Rumors they have the Yanks having to offer Melky, Huges, and Jackson(OF prospect)

But the Twins have really wanted Cano...

Break down the trade

Santana worth- Melky, Joba, and mid level prospect(as opposed to Hughes and their 2nd best OF prospect)

Sheets worth- Cano

I think it breaks down pretty good from our end...

Hall is worth Nathan

Joba, Cano, and Escobar is very good for Santana

but we would need to come back with another high prospect for Garza or Bonzer...since some Rumors have Garza priced at Delmon young and Bonzer priced at Carlos Quienton...

The following is from Tom Haudricourt latest blog,

Don't believe the rumors you read and hear that suggest the Brewers might trade for Minnesota closer Joe Nathan or Washington's Chad Cordero, in the wake of losing free agent Francisco Cordero to Cincinnati.General manager Doug Melvin said today it is unlikely he would trade for a closer because of what is being asked in return.
"If it involves (Rickie) Weeks, (J.J.) Hardy, (Corey) Hart, it's not going to happen," said Melvin. "If you're trading to fill that position, you're giving up players. So, you're weakening one spot to fill another."
Melvin said it made little sense to trade for Nathan because he can be a free agent after the 2008 season and the Brewers probably would lose him."More than likely, you would," he said "You know where the free agent bar is set now for closers (with Cordero getting $46 million for four years from the Reds). They'll all try to get that."

Is it just me, or is Tom H. seem to be right on top of every rumor at this point? As soon as these things get discussed Tom is there with a blog entry and it seems he talks to Melvin a great deal. It looks like JS was blocking Haurdicourt from getting info out. Great to see this activity before the winter meetings.

Fuentes is a free agent after the season, too. If he has a great year, he's due for quite a contract as well. Maybe not as big as Nathan's, but it is something to take into account.

Thanks, AT, I didn't realize that... and being at work, didn't really have the time to check. Fuentes's next contract will be big, but if we could trade for him & iron out an extension, I'd find it hard to believe that he'd cost as much as Nathan. If he made it to FA, then I could see similar AAV/contracts.

I was going to post the same thing, that seems to be a common belief that Nathan is younger then Cordero, when in fact he's older.

Actually I would expect Nathan to get pretty close to what Cordero got from Cinci. I think if you offered Nathan a 5 year deal w/ the same yearly salary as Cordero he'd sign it in a heart beat. IMO Nathan is a better closer then Cordero so he may get an extra million per year vs Cordero, but I'm perfectly fine with that. Don't forget Sheet's big salary will be gone next year to.

"The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports that closer Joe Nathan could be traded to the Brewers in the coming weeks. The Brewers just lost closer Francisco Cordero, who signed a four-year, $46 million free-agent deal with the Reds. Nathan, 33, is set to become a free agent after the 2008 season. The Twins could replace him with either Pat Neshek or Juan Rincon. If Nathan becomes available, the Giants -- Nathan's original team -- are considered to be another team that would pursue him."

This is from ESPN Insider Rumor Central. Nothing really too new, just more confirmation of the talks. Doesn't mention who the Brewers would be giving up either.

Who could the Astros possibly give up to get anybody good? There farm system is pathetic and there is no way there giving up someone like Pence. I just dont see who they could have to offer?

Troy Patton is going to be a pretty good LH SP. Maybe that's the beginning of replacing Santana? Also sounds like Burke may be on the way out. Think Patton, Burke and a prospect would get it done? Or isn't that enough? Not that I'm suggesting the Astros would really consider trading Patton....
