Winter is back

brewers255
6-10 inches predicted for us in Wausau tommorow. I like the snow this time of year and it's even a little fun to use the snow blower the first time but that feeling will quickly deteriorate into wanting to move somewhere warm after Christmas. At least it's going to hit on a weekend so most people won't have to drive. Stay safe out there if you're going to be traveling tommorow and Sunday.

Bob Lindmeier and his compadres at Channel 27 have had the graphic of Southern Wisconsin on the bottom of the screen since about 3 PM today...18 hours before the warning takes effect. Personally, I think the graphic is pretty unnecessary, considering the entire state is under a winter storm warning for tomorrow.

I am enjoying the knowledge that UW-Madison's Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences has postponed its Solstice Party to February, because of the weather. The announcement must have been made on Friday, and the party was originally going to be Saturday night.

Solstice Party Postponed!

Because of the very dangerous weather that appears to be inexorably headed our way tomorrow afternoon and evening, we have elected to postpone the Solstice Party that was scheduled for tomorrow night. It appears that snow, then sleet, then freezing rain will conspire to make travel an absolute nightmare tomorrow evening and we just don't want to regret that we did not make the prudent call.

On the bright side, the Pyle Center is available on Saturday February 2 (Groundhog Day) and so the event has been rescheduled for that day. Be safe tomorrow in the ice.

Yep, I was supposed to go to the solstice party tonight, too bad it was cancelled. It was going to be a good time too...

However, as I look out the window at College Library, I see nothing but white right now, so I guess it was a good decision.

So is the real reason the party's postponed so that you "official" weather geeks can just observe the weather? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

(I mean, obviously I realize it would look bad if people were injured due to adverse weather on the way to the AOS party. But it seems plausible for it to be a little of column A and a little of column B.)

Perhaps. I was sort of disappointed about missing out on the "fun" tonight, but we were getting a keg so maybe they were more concerned with intoxicated weather students trying to walk home on a half-inch of ice http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Unfortunately, I gave away my hockey tickets so now I have nothing to do at all tonight.

Fond du Lac should be good for 4-7 inches of snow, mixing with sleet in the late evening, followed by about 1/4 inch of freezing rain between 7 PM and midnight.

If anyone else is curious,

2-5 inches of snow south of I-94, with the changeover to sleet occurring around 3 PM in the Madison/Milwaukee areas. Most ice to the south, most snow to the north.

Honestly, there hasn't been a good ice storm around here in a long time, so I'm not really sure how widespread issues will be with the freezing rain. It looks like the temperatures are supposed to remain in the upper-20's while the freezing rain is falling, so there will probably be a glaze on everything and it could cause tree limbs to break and some power outages to occur, especially with the 30 mph winds. However, according to the websites I am looking at, it takes over 1/2 inch of ice to cause major damage, so most areas will avoid that. My advice is not to go outside tonight!

back when i was in madison, we did this on a nightly basis...uphill...both ways!!

honestly though, there was nothing worse than trying to walk up (or down) an icy bascom hill.

personally, i plan on going out christmas shopping in the next hour or so while everyone is holed in for the day. horray for 4-wheel drive!

Been snowing by me for a while now. I can still see a few of the leaves that I haven't raked. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Yeah, I've got a bunch of those too and I'm not going to be happy about it in the spring.

MMmm...women's volleyball. That warms me up.

What, wait, oh, I'm back. Here in Tosa it switched to something loud banging off the window about an hour ago. I ain't heading out to check until the morning unless ferrets start falling from the sky or something. I thought for about .5 seconds about shoveling before the freeze. I logged on here instead.

The creepy voice on the weather radio has been saying bad things all afternoon like "preperations for loss of power should have already been completed" and "WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE!" The National Weather Service needs to hire Ollie from Family Guy.

Hey, Family Guy! I'm going to go watch season 3 before we lose power!

Actually, the lights flickered twice at the Field House, and I had brought a small flashlight just in case of a power failure. (Alas, the only power failure was on the part of the Badgers; but that's another story.)

The ice wasn't the big issue, rather the 5.8 inches (in Madison) of slop that made it feel like we were walking in quicksand, only with the added attraction of rain and occasional ice pellets in our faces. Awesome. All we could do was trudge. I am confident it wouldn't have been any easier for obsessed with brew crew and his possibly tipsy AOS colleagues.
