Winter is back

It looks like Milwaukee should see somewhere in the 8-13" range, falling mostly during the day on Sunday. The snow will be very heavy and wet and some sleet/freezing rain might mix in which would hold down the numbers a bit closer to the 8" range.

It's a major storm, the models have come into agreement...we don't get storms like this very often but this is the second one in less than 2 weeks.

On a side note, I just found out I'm going to New Orleans for spring break. Goodbye cold and snow (at least for one week)!

Here's what the National Weather Service says in their latest update (about 12:30)...

.STRONG LOW PRESSURE WILL BRING ANOTHER WINTER STORM TO SOUTHERN

WISCONSIN LATE SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY EVENING. THE LOW WILL

DEVELOP IN THE SOUTHERN PLAINS SATURDAY AFTERNOON...THEN INTENSIFY

AND MOVE NORTHEAST THROUGH THE CHICAGO AREA AROUND MIDDAY SUNDAY.

THE FORECAST TRACK OF THE LOW MAY CHANGE LEADING UP TO SUNDAY...BUT

BEST INDICATIONS FOR THE HEAVIEST SNOW WILL BE WEST OF THE MILWAUKEE

METROPOLITAN AREA...AND MORE SO FROM MONROE...TO MADISON...TO FOND

DU LAC...AND LOCATIONS TO THE WEST.

LIGHT ICE ACCUMULATION IS EXPECTED LATE SATURDAY NIGHT AND SUNDAY

MORNING...ESPECIALLY OVER SOUTHEAST WISCONSIN. SNOW AMOUNTS WILL

RANGE TO AROUND 6 INCHES IN THE MILWAUKEE METROPOLITAN AREA TO 8

TO 12 INCHES IN EAST CENTRAL AND SOUTH CENTRAL WISCONSIN. SINCE

SOUTHEAST WISCONSIN...INCLUDING THE MILWAUKEE METROPOLITAN AREA IS

NEAR THE RAIN SNOW LINE...UPCOMING FORECASTS OF ICE AND SNOW

AMOUNTS WILL LIKELY CHANGE THERE. THOSE WITH TRAVEL PLANS LATE SATURDAY

NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY EVENING SHOULD KEEP UP WITH THE LATEST FORECASTS.

That update sounds about right.

Milwaukee is very close to the rain/mix/snow line, so Milwaukee could probably get anywhere from 4 inches to 12 inches right now. Areas like Sheboygan and Madison are much more likely to see all snow and thus higher amounts.

It really depends on where the storm sets up, a 30 mile shift in the track could make a big difference.

Thanks for the nice comments, I have way too much fun tracking these storms!

The entire southeast 2/3 of the state should be getting a decent snow from this.

Tough call on amounts. Maybe 4-8" in Portage and 7-11" in West Bend. Still a little too early to say for sure.

By the Way -- I would like to humbly suggest that OWBC get a special title regarding his helpful weather updates. Something like "Thor Forecaster", but probably way more clever.

I appreciate your contributions!

I agree he needs a special title. Brian can you make that happen?

While this may end up among the top five snowiest winters in Milwaukee history, it's nowhere near the record. Imagine 30+ additional inches:

Careful what you say there, homer. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

I added a title for OWBC, which should appear on his next post.

"The Weatherman" he certainly deserves it. Hey hawing can I get a title? How does one get a cool title?

Cool titles are issued sparingly, and generally under extraordinary circumstances. So with all due respect, I will suggest that you not hold your breath. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

I always wonder about the reliability of weather records from the 1800s and/or very early 1900s. Were their instruments really up to snuff? How accurate are those records, really?

I just seem to notice many weather records are from so long ago, and are so outlandish, almost like they are vaudevillian or PT Barnumium (I'm making these words up) the way they are so extraordinarily higher than modern day high totals. I know back then they made stories seem so much bigger than they really were.

Actually, the title appears in all of his posts. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Yeah, I realized that after a few minutes. (gives head a V-8-esque slap)

And geez, you know, metereology is really only in the business of being the messenger. I wouldn't call OWBC an enemy by any means - not until perhaps I meet him, someday. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

As for old-school weather records...the measuring equipment probably had a lower "accuracy ceiling" (for lack of a better phrase), and measurements would have been taken by humans instead of automatically (as is the case at many stations now). My guess is that Weather Bureau (forerunner to the NWS) staff were as concerned about accuracy as their modern day counterparts, and their records are less likely to be overstated.

One factor that I think could make more of a difference (between past and present) is the occasional change of weather station location. For example, weather records in Madison were taken on the UW campus for decades. Now the official measurements are taken at the airport. Are those locations different enough so that the readings of the past aren't equivalent to those taken nowadays? I'm sure this has happened in other cities too.

He keeps relaying bad news to us. That's good enough to make him my enemy. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
