I was intrigued by this blurb about Joe Thatcher in the 2007 BrewerFan.net staff preview. What is expected of him if/when he makes the major league club? I noticed from one of the articles in his player profile that he isn't a real hard thrower - low 90's with a slider and a cut fastball. So he doesn't really project to be a closer. Is he a guy that can give you a few innings of quality work? Is he more of a LOOGY? Somewhere in between? He is a guy I haven't really heard of much before outside of a quick mention, so I was just curious what his story is.

In 93 cumulative PA against LHB last year, he had a .144 BAA and a .357 OPS.

 

Not the greatest competition, but still really nice. Profiles into a solid LOOGY.

I watched Thatcher in WV while he was here last year. "sturdy framed" thick legged guy that has a delivery that is not quite three quarter arm but looks pretty close. Throws hard and seems mature enough to understand how to pitch and not just throw. He's been one of the more dominant bullpen arms I've seen come through single A here. He was my pick behind Inman and Yo to get to the bigs, but I guess he proved me somewhat wrong!

Please excuse my ignorance on this, but can someone please explain to me what LOOGY stands for or means.. I know it's a left handed reliever, but beyond that I'm lost....Is it any left handed middle/set up guy? Or is it a lefty that's solely to get lefties out? Or??
