Brewers interested in Pedro Feliz

Per Haudricourt's blog, Melvin has expressed some interest in 3B Pedro Feliz.

And someone should tell Tom that we wouldn't have to give up a 2nd rounder for a Class B FA, per the last CBA.

Still, it's nice that he's providing us with fairly regular info/rumors this year.

Really? This falls somewhere between "blah" & "meh," unless Feliz is an absolute whiz with the leather. Just SUCH a low OBP guy.

EDIT: Annnnnddd... he ranked first in 2007 of qualified (innings played @ position) 3B in RZR.

Pass!

Guy has a career OBP UNDER .300 and he'll be 33 next year. The only thing he has going for him is good defense. I'd rather see Joe Dillon play third if I had to pick between the two.

I'd say it's a step lower than blah. It's gaaaaaah. This along with Kendall makes me hope Melvin's just throwing out a ton of smokescreens this offseason.

EDIT:

Feliz' stats: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/stats?playerId=4520

He's never really had passable numbers for a 3B in his career (career high OPS of .793, ugh). He's always had great counting stats though (4 consecutive years of 20+ HR and 70+ RBI), which make GM's tend to over-value him. Hopefully we're not one of them.

The question is, do we want Feliz over a guy like Kenny Lofton?

To move Braun to the outfield and put Feliz at third would definately improve our team defense. Plus, the Giants ballpark is a morgue for right handed pull hitters. Miller Park may put Feliz's OPS around .800. Offensively, he would replace Menchkins.

This, to me, would not be a great move, but would defiately improve us.

Everybody wants us to improve our pen and defense, then complains when we are talking to a Gold Glove caliber third baseman. The only way we improve our offense and defense with one move would be to sign or trade for one of these guys: Hunter, Jones, Lowell, Rolen, or Teahen. Only one of them (Teahen) is cost effective.

My guess is that if we sign Feliz, Cordero gets the contract he wants from DM.

Because we wouldn't be spending big money on a free agent.

Unless Sheets gets dealt, DM is not signing an expensive starter this year.

If the Brewers lineup consists of Estrada/Kendall, Prince, Weeks, Hardy, Feliz, Braun, Hall, and Hart, there is no room for an expensive free agent there.

So, it's either Cordero or another reliever getting the big money from the Crew this Winter. I think Coco is comfortable here, so he stays. If the Brewers don't spend a little coin this year after drawing the way they did, they would never hear the end of it.

I think CoCo will likely find a fourth guaranteed year & more money more 'comfortable' than he does Milwaukee. Feliz can't hit well enough to justify giving up something of quality to get him, and it's gonna take more than just getting away from AT&T to help Pedro. His three-year road splits:

.236/.275/.431/.706

You're getting on people for criticizing that? That's away from AT&T. Great D or not, that's putrid at 3B.

I giggle whenever a very good defensive player is brought forth, and no one likes them either...

Pedro Feliz v. Ryan Braun is 2 extremes -- there has to be someone in the middle ground.

Make up your mind, folks, there aren't a lot of top defenders that also hit .400/.500.

No one said we needed a top defender. One of those mini-putt windmills would be an improvement at 3b.

I think people want to see some balance in their players.

Oof.

It is quite possible to have a player with both a nice OBP and average or better defensive skills. Feliz is terrible at the plate, and would push the team OBP backwards by a decent margin. Rolen, Teahen, Ensberg or Mora, for instance. Even Ty Wigginton is light years beyond Feliz in OBP.

So you're seriously advocating acquiring a .700 OPS third baseman that plays great defense, Al? I'm not even sure if you're sure of the point you're trying to make here....

There solid defensive players out there that don't have OPS numbers that are slightly better than Craig Counsell's career marks.

The link isn't working for me. Please tell me Melvin is just looking at Feliz as a possibility to mow his lawn or something. Certainly he can't be considering putting Feliz at third. I don't care how good of a defender he is, his defense couldn't possibly make up for his offensive deficiencies.

Just doing the math in my head, I think he'd be about 15-20 runs under "average" for a 3B, and while I'm sure some of the formulas have him 30+ runs to the positive on defense, I'd say the best 3B may well be worth a couple games over the course of a season...that'd make him about average.

As an OBP lover myself, I'd prefer other options, but Feliz will get paid, as he has plenty of skills.

Feliz is an off-the-charts defensive wiz, but the bat is obviously tough to swallow. (His home park is basically completely neutral, so I'm not sure the value of quoting road stats.) That would indeed be an extreme swing...Feliz is the version of Ryan Braun in the universe where Spock had a beard.

...but it could also be that Feliz is very cheap compared to his actual value, because nobody believes his defense could offset his offensive offense. Tango was discussing this in his blog, and has him as a league-average 3b when defense is considered...a guy worthy of a 2/$18M or 3/$21M deal. I'd be kind of surprised if he got more than 2/$12M...so I think it's well worth inquiring.

I'd rather have Wes Helms back.

(slaps head)...wait...what did I just type?

Um, that was actually a gross overreaction on my behalf. Sorry for overreacting. But I sure don't want Feliz.

Couldn't we just re-sign Graffanino? How about Mike Lamb? Call Coskie or Rillo back.

So, let me get this straight. The free agents that DM is currently interested in/talking to consist of....Jason Kendall and Pedro Feliz. It's 2002, right? We're not just coming off of a winning season, one where we had more wins than losses in 15 years are we? That's what winning gets you? I'm hoping this is a really bad dream and that he's actually going to trade for a great young catcher who can field AND hit, and A-Rod, so that our third base problems are solved.
