cleaning a signed jersey

brwrsfan

I'm not sure where to put this thread...so feel free to move it.

I'm hoping you guys can help me out...I have very little experience with laundry (yes, I'm a guy)...but I have a Bill Hall jersey that I wore probaly 5-6 times last year before I was lucky enough to get him to sign it before a game. He signed it with a black sharpie on the back of the jersey (jersey is grey). Having worn it a couple of times, including the day that he signed it...it's a bit dirty. I'd like to get it framed, but it doesn't look good right now (the neck for instance has some sweat marks). How should I go about cleaning this?

If I wash it, will the signature fade tremendously? If I do wash it....do I use hot water? cold water?

I took it to a dry cleaners but the only one around here is...uh...not english speaking. So I couldn't really explain to him what I wanted done....any help would be much appreciated. I'd like to keep the signature as fresh as possible but the jersey really needs to be cleaned. I did also try a tide stick on the front (just to see what it would do...and it kinda altered the color slightly so I don't want to use that. Thanks for the help.

FWIW, I have a Mike Rivera signed under armor shirt that I wear and wash regularly(cold water) and the sig looks fine. Also my son has several jerseys that he has managed to mark up with a sharpie (on accident). Those don't come out in the regular wash.

I would just wash it by hand. Scrub it very very lightly with a brush and use hot water and laundry detergent. Of course avoid the signed area.

I doubt the signature would come out in the regular wash with cold water but I wouldn't risk it unless I had to.

I think they actually use water in some way when they dry clean.

Edit: Nope I was wrong. doesn't involve water, but does use liquids.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

I got Sheffields autograph back in about 1990. He came to be because I was a kid. Since that day I have loved him when everyone else hated him. Now that I am an adult, I dont have the first clue how to get a players autograph.

Not to mention my 3 kids woudl love it.

Thanks for the input, I'll probably wash it by hand. As far as getting them signed (I have Fielder and Hall). The Brewers make it pretty easy with their autograph Fridays or spring training obviously is a good bet. I got the Hall one on the road last year, there aren't that many Brewer fans on the road, and I pretty much just stood by the dugout, he looked right at me holding his jersey and he signed it. The players still do sign autographs on their own sometimes, it's just really hard to get them at home. I'd highly recommend the autograph Friday's thing if you can get to the stadium early...it's free and every player will be available at some point.
