Thanks for the compliments. Regarding the bats... when I decided to get into collecting bats some years ago, I didn't know where to get my hands on game used bats. In reality, I still don't (outside of 20fry). Second, they are cheaper and more readily available. I got the majority of the bats from Dick's Sports for $20-25 a piece. They were nice when I would decide on a spur of the moment to try and get someone to sign it. Third, I personally like the way the autograph stands out more on an unused bat instead of a game used one. And most of the time when I'd find a game used bat, it'd be cracked and for some reason I just rather have an uncracked bat. Obviously some would rather have signatures on game used memorabilia, but actually do like the store-bought bats better. It basically is a personal preference, as I highly doubt most people on this board are about turning a profit on their collections. I sure am not!

tnweill: that is correct, collecting is about personal preference. and i also highly doubt that people on this board are looking for profits from their collections. i have never sold anything out of my collection. i voiced my opinion since everyone else was. sorry that my opinion was not what everyone else thought.but again i guess it comes down to personal preference.

if you guys are trying to say that game used bats by some minor leaguer are better to get signed, i 100% disagree. I think that is ridiculous, I think it is cool to get a J.J. Hardy bat that he used signed by him, but some random player's bat, I think that is weird to get signed by a different player, it isn't his bat, why should he sign it, I don't do that, I just get a big stick or something like that.

I'm going to have to agree with BHF on his last comment. Gettting a Ryan Braun's (for instance) autograph on a game-used bat by rookie ball no-namer is not as good (to me) as an unused, store-bought bat. Now, you can buy a new, expensive bat that's the same brand some big leaguers use and that may be better than a 28" Louisville Slugger from Fleet Farm, but at least you're not lying to anyone--and I'm not saying anyone here is--but some people get Joe Schmoe's bat signed by Braun and sell it as a Braun-signed game-used bat (with or without saying whether it was actually his wood to begin with).

You took our opinion to an extreme with Braun. What about for trying to obtain multiple signatures (team bats) or the Jr Spiveys/Damien Millers/Gabe Grosses/Kevin Mench's of the world? I'd argue that the game used pro stock bat is suitable for almost every player outside of the short list of "Top Tier" guys.

My order of preference:

  1. Game used Pro Issued: This is a bat ordered by and issued to a player. Undoubtedly the best thing to have. Also the hardest to come by.

  2. Game Ready Pro Issue: Same as above, but never used. Kind of hard to find because almost every bat ordered gets used.

  3. Game Used Pro Stock: (or Joe Shmooe bats for some of you): Pine tar, tape, scuff marks, as long as the barrel is clean it's perfect.

  4. Pro Model Player Bats: Similar to a store bought bat but usually has better size and weight and the players name is on the barrel of the bat.
  5. Pro Model : These are the models sold for game use to the public in some stores. Again, these usually have good size and weight.

  6. Replica Pro Model: These are the one typically found in the stores. Usually top out at 30 inches. To small, to light, to shiny.

Actually, I can flip #3 & #4 depending on the player/bat. Just depends.

One thing I'll agree with MHgb is that I can't stand ebay sellers who purposely try to misrepresent a game used stock bat for a game used and issued bat. Drives me nuts. This is where knowing what your looking for becomes important.

I have all kinds of bats in my collection. I don't think there is one answer for each occasion. Just do what you like/can afford. I collect for myself, not to for profit. Just do what makes you happy.

Okay, so to help turn this thread back towards the original topic, I'll post a pic of some of my bats. There are at least a dozen or so not pictured. Took them down to do some spot painting. I figured I'd snap off a photo or two before I hang them back up.

i have 2 pro stock bats that i have signed by the team. other than that i have for example a rickie weeks AA game used bat that has his name on if that i got signed. that is was i am talking about. just a question but would you get ryan braun to sign a spalding baseball or a real major league ball? once again like i said before i am not allowed to post my opinion with out everyone complaining. BUT IF THATS WHAT YOU LIKE DONT LET ME STOP YOU FROM BUYING WALMART BATS. i will buy game used bats.

Hmmm not sure if anyone said anything about going to Wal-Mart to buy a bat. I do recall somebody saying something about Burghardts and last time I was there, they sell pretty nice stuff, since they are one of the areas best supplier for baseball and softball equipment to the high schools.....

Anyone can get whatever signed bat they want, just when you made your original statment it sounds like you were making fun of tnweill collection.

i was never making fun of his collection. he has some very nice stuff and has is displayed very well. i like the baseball holders the most. i was talking about the comment zinshiem made and that was it. yes burghardts has nice stuff and i was being sarcastic. and for the record tnweill has the nicest balls.

Matt, no need to apologize.... I was picking up what you were putting down regarding the personal preference idea as that's ultimately what it comes down to. If I could do it all over again, I think I would probably look for the same model that each player use(d) and get a clean, unused model signed by said player instead.

But about having the nicest balls... well, what can I say!

Alright, so I don't have a lot of room in my apartment right now, so most of my stuff gets packed away until I get a house. (hopefully next year) Anyway, here are some photo's of what I have:

Yeah, I was there this year. My main ones from that were Willie Davis, Al Harris, Ryan Grant, and LeRoy Butler.

sweet..I'm sure I saw you a hundred times and didn't know it. Mine were Driver, Rodgers, Grant, and Freeman....passed on tons of them because I ran out of things to get signed.

earlier in the thread(i think it was this one) there was talk about getting just a regular bat signed by a player isn't as cool as getting a game used bat signed by the player. Does this go for jerseys too? does what i'm saying even make sense?

i think i do jason, if i have a prince fielder game used jersey, and got it signed, that would be the best. The next imo would be an authentic prince fielder jersey signed, the next best would be a blank authentic brewers jersey, then a replica prince fielder jersey, then a replica brewers blank jersey.

is that what you mean?

yup. Getting game used jerseys is just so hard, unless you're paying a ton of money for them.

Id like to get walker and fergy on the picture. might be tough though

Ain't that the truth. I passed on two jerseys this weekend. One was a Mike Ignasiak (sp?) game issued (read: not worn or used) jersey and a Matt Ford uniform. Nearly $300 for the pair for two no name Brewers. Jeez.
