Hopefully it will continue, but it looks like we may be getting some box-score type updates from the minor league spring training games. Now in the big picture, please keep in mind that these are about as meaningful as, well, as meaningful as the box scores should be from the very first day of minor league games -- not very. Still fun to see some names and numbers, and keep in mind that in many, many cases, these assignments don't reflect what final affiliate rosters will be. The following is from Saturday's first day of action, all against San Francisco affiliates -- included are pitch counts, which is neat. Nice to see LHP Sam Narron healthy, and nice outing for fellow southpaw Steve Garrison:

Notes -- we're working on finding out who "D. Rogers" is in the Huntsville pitching line, perhaps a misprint; 1B Grant Richardson, sidelined with a bad shoulder all last season, active in both weekend games; something about games involving High Desert -- four triples!; impressive four innings from 6'6" LHP Mike Ramlow; RHP Omar Aguilar being groomed for late-inning work? Brent Brewer goes deep...

Adam McCalvy of MLB.com:

Lefty Chris Capuano, who is 0-1 with a 13.50 ERA in three Cactus League starts, pitched in a Minor League game on Monday with so-so results. He was charged with three runs, all earned, on four hits, three walks and a hit batsman in four innings against San Diego's Triple-A club in Peoria. Capuano struck out four and threw 76 total pitches. ... Catcher Damian Miller, working back from a calf strain, caught Capuano's outing and will catch Jeff Suppan in a Minor League game on Tuesday. Suppan has to pitch to stay on schedule for the start of the season.

There was no point in adding them earlier in the offseason without pertinent bio info, even though we had most of the names.

From the Journal-Sentinel:

Club officials, including Melvin, took time in the afternoon to watch Brewers rookie-ball players take on a touring amateur team from Canada. The attraction was right-hander Jeremy Jeffress, the Brewers' first-round pick in the 2006 June draft. Jeffress, who throws his fastball regularly in the high-90-mph range, struck out five in two innings.

Friday's Games vs. the Angels' organization (plus Helena/Arizona Rookie, which played a team of Canadian kids):

Evidence here that these "rosters" are completely juggled on a daily basis, as AAA pitchers were shuffled to Huntsville for work to make room for the big league boys; pitching lines of note belong to RHP's Jesse Harper and Mike McClendon, LHP Mike Ramlow (again), and Rookie League RHP's Jeremy Jeffress and Evan Anundsen; offensively, look to the West Virginia lines, where Michael Brantley (five hits), Chuckie Caufield (four) and Eric Newton (three) rocked the house.

You'll notice the name Dubose with a home run at the rookie league level Friday.

That would be 2006 35th round draft pick, 3B Sanduan Dubose, who initially was announced as signed in Brewer press notes last season, then that was rescinded, and he did not appear in a pro game last year. Potential nice power source, here's the writeup from last June:

p092.ezboard.com/fbrewers...mp;stop=35

He's already 24 years old, so he'll have to show a lot quickly. Could be a nice story, and we're always looking for those...

Saturday's Games vs. the Cubs' organization:

No real studly hitting line -- Roque Mercedes, Patrick Ryan and Steve Bray with nice pitching lines; is anybody else wondering why only one inning (three K's) for Yovani Gallardo? Adam, Tom, J.P. -- someone get us an answer...

Sunday's Games vs. the Mariners' organization:

R.A. Dickey's knuckler sure hasn't been knuckling this spring; nice outing for Adam Pettyjohn; Vince Perkins 15 pitches in his inning (this was his second outing); lots of triples in Maryvale all spring, but ovrall, little offense to be found today; lefty David Welch with an uncharacteristically tough day...

Monday's Games vs. the Royals' organization:

30-year-old LHP Lindsay Gulin turning some heads at AAA; fellow southpaw Steve Hammond still rocks; both Cole Gillespie and Chris Errecart go deep for the 'Tees -- I bet we see that a lot this season; Waukesha's Ben Stanczyk with three sweet innings; 19-year-old LHP Zach Braddock is the man...

Sounds Drop Close Contest To River Cats, 8-7

PHOENIX -- Despite a home run from Brad Nelson and a solid first game by recent signee Joe Dillon, the Nashville Sounds fell short against the Sacramento River Cats (AAA-A's) on Tuesday afternoon at Papago Park, dropping an 8-7 spring training decision.

Nelson went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs and two runs scored while Dillon, who signed a minor-league deal with the Brewers earlier in the day, finished 2-for-4 with an RBI triple and run scored. Jose Macias continued his strong spring with a 2-for-5 day that included a double and an RBI.

Zach Jackson made the start for Nashville and allowed three runs on three hits over 2 2/3 innings. He walked three batters while striking out two. Mike Meyers followed on the hill and allowed a pair of runs over two innings before Alec Zumwalt worked two scoreless frames for the Sounds. Mitch Stetter (1.0 IP, 1 R) and Luther Hackman (1.0 IP, 2 R) finished up on the hill for Nashville.

The Sounds (2-6-2) continue their spring slate with a home contest against the Portland Beavers (AAA-Padres) on Wednesday afternoon at Maryvale Baseball Park.

Power Surge Sends Stars Past Midland

Brendan Katin continued his strong spring performance by slugging two solo home runs in the Stars' 11-6 Tuesday win over Midland, the double-A Texas League affiliate of the Oakland Athletics, Tuesday afternoon in Scottsdale. Huntsville improved its' spring record to 5-4-1 by belting four long balls and pounding out 17 hits one day after being shutout on four singles.

The Stars also got round trippers from Mike Carlin and Jeff Eure, who hit 12 last year for Huntsville and led the team with 54 runs batted in. Carlin also collected a double, drove in three and scored twice, while Mel Stocker singled twice, added a double and a triple and knocked in a pair. Every position player had at least one hit except for outfielder Steve Moss and every player scored at least one run except for catcher Lou Palmisano.

Sam Narron started for the Stars and lasted four frames, giving up one unearned run on two hits. He struck out two and walked one while throwing 50 pitches. He was followed by Robert Hinton, who threw one scoreless inning and Jeff Housman, who tossed two shutout frames. Chris DeMaria was knocked around for five runs on four hits and a walk in just a third of an inning.
