Is it time to move Ben Sheets

VegasBrewerFan
As I surf the web for mlb trade rumors and possible free agent signings I came across a couple of stories on pro sports daily that the Brewers would serious consider a trade for Sheets. He is rumored to be at the top of the Mets shopping list just behimd Santana who is believed to be just a little out of there reach. No players were named so who knows just how true this is,but it got me thinking is it time to move Big Ben. There are many pros and cons to this in my humble opinion.Just wondering what kind of package you think we could get for the often injured right hander? It would free up money to resign or sign closer, and keep some of our young talent. We have the depth in our starting pitching to do this, but we all saw what happened last year without a true ace.Just wondering what everyone thinks.I'm kinda on the fence, but wondering if my love for Sheets is clouding my judgement.

I'd trade anyone for the right price but with the Brewers shifting into "win now" mode, it's tough to envision a trade that would make them better next year. I'm sure Melvin is willing to listen, however.

Isnt next season a contract year for sheets?

There's no evidence that players perform better than expected in contract years, if that's what you are alluding to.

If they are thinking of trading Sheets (and I think they should) they'll have to sit tight for awhile until they sign free agents and make other trades. If they trade him early it will look too much like throwing in the towel, and I suspect it will affect their ability to make moves. However if they move to acquire a young "Gallardo" type stud (which would involve major players) I'd say they're getting ready to deal Big Ben. cross your collective fingers.

I think it depends a lot on how we are doing in 2008 --- much like Carlos Lee a couple of years ago. If

we were serious contenders the year we traded Lee, we may have not traded him and made a playoff run. I suspect

the same will be true for Sheets -- If we are in a pennant race, I would think we would let Ben walk at the end of

the year. If we are 15 games out in July, trading Ben would/could make a lot of sense.

A team like the NYM would be able to work out an extension or new contract with Ben.

Of course Ben probably needs to get through the year uninjured.
