Milwaukee Panthers Men's Basketball

jhart05

The Milwaukee Panthers men's college basketball season starts this Friday, November 9. Today for when some will read this.

This is going to be an exciting team to watch again, with the best recruiting class ever at Milwaukee. Most say the top class in the Horizon this year.

Come on out and catch a game. Cheapest ticket is only $10, and there really isn't a bad seat in the Mecca.

Apparently, Avery Smith got kicked off the team for violations of team rules/policies/codes and probably general headbutting with coach Jeter. At a Valpo hoops forum I frequent, a UWM fan said, "I don't see this hurting UWM that much. He was a bad passer, played sloppy defense, and would openly chew out other players on the court. Good riddance as far as I'm concerned. Torre Johnson and Ricky Franklin will lead the team this year. And watch out for Flowers. He's a moose." Should be interesting to watch.

I'm pretty pumped this year to be in the same conference as UWM and UWGB. Too bad the games aren't until February. On weeknights. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif

How has Jeter brought this program to where Pearl had it? I guess I don't see this just quite yet. The team that went to the sweet 16 was a really really good team. I don't think Jeter has done much to be anywhere near what Pearl's teams were. I'm pretty sure every player on the team that Jeter led to the tournament was Pearl recruit. I'm not saying Jeter can't recruit, but I think this year and especially next year will show us where UWM is.

Being an alumnus, I have of course followed the team for years.

Jeter has done a fantastic job of recruiting in the off season for this year's team. Eight new players, at least 5 of which will be key contributors this year.

While it would have been nice to have Avo on the team this year, it's not going to hurt the team as much as some might think. We wish Avo all the best in the future, but really this is one of those cases of "additon by subtraction". This team has a lot of talented young guards, plenty enough to pick up the slack. Plus with the additions of Torre, Flowers, and Hill, we may actually have an inside game this year.

- Al Hanson, PG, starter, good leader for this still young team. He's the only one left from the Sweet 16 run. There is much debate about him if he should be a starter or not. My feeling is that Jeter trusts him the most right now to run the offense. As the year goes along, we may see a Deonte Roberts or a Ricky Franklin take over the starting spot here.
- Roman Gentry, SG, starter, looks taller and stronger than last year. He is ready to break out this year.
- Paige Paulsen, SF, starter, won't be asked to do everything this year, and is back to his more comfortable SF position.
- Torre Johnson, SF, starter, Milwaukee kid who transferred from Oklahoma State. He really is a high D1 player. Smooth and athletic.
- Tim Flowers, PF, starter, the prize of this years recruiting class from Chicago Simeon, one of the top high school teams in the nation over the past two years. Everything we were told he was going to be. Is already being called a young Charles Barkley. He is just a beast around the bucket. Is simular to Prince Fielder in that he plays with a lot of fire and intensity, and tries to get that fire into his teammates. Will end up being one of the best ever at Milwaukee, I feel he'll end up being better than Joah Tucker or Adrian Tigert.

The main guys off the bench will be:
- Ricky Franklin, G, Milwaukee kid, has finally shaken off the rust of having to sit out that one year. He now looks more like the player that won the City Conference Player of the Year as a Senior over Landry from Madison.
- Deonte Roberts, G, from the top prep school in the nation last year, is an interesting prospect. Very quick, very good on the ball defender.
- Charlie Swiggett, G, is similar to Roberts, but still not 100% after blowing out a knee last year.
- Deion James, G, is another Milwaukee kid who transferred from Tulsa, I'm not sure where he fits in yet.
- Kaylan Anderson, G/F, is a kid who does the little things for you.
- Kevin Johnson, F, the other kid we have from Chicago Simeon. Strong, athletic, smart player, and a smart kid in the classroom as well. Will be a key starter maybe even next year.
- Anthony Hill, PF, yet another Milwaukee kid. He impresses me more with every minute he plays. Has a very good soft shot for being 6-8.

- Brad Carroll, G, will probably red shirt this year. Watch for him in the next few years. He's a 6-6, true point guard from Arizona. Already a good passer who sees the floor very well. Just needs time in the weight room and to work on his defense.
- Joe Allen, PF, another Milwaukee kid, former Army guy who was in Iraq, will be back next year. He was supposed to provide some muscle inside, but got hurt and will be out for the year.

The future is very bright. They took their lumps last year, but this team is definitely on the rise back to the top of the Horizon League.

He hasn't yet. I'll agree with that. Loosing that many players in your second year is tough. Jeter has brought in some very good talent this year thou. Many "experts" say he has the best recruiting class in the Horizon League, a few put Butler up there and Milwaukee second. In the next couple of years, we will see what Jeter can really do, as he now has a team of only his recruits, with the exception of Al Hanson.

Actually a few key contributors to Pearl's teams were brought here by Bo Ryan. Tigert and Chris Hill, just to name two. Pearl did bring Joah, McCants and Boo Davis here. Also remember it was Jeter who brought D.Wade to Marquette.

Just keep an eye on this team for the next few years. Lots of excitement right now around the Panther program. Jeter will bring us back to the Tournament if he doesn't get snached away by a high D1 program first.

I'm also an alumnus. I'm not saying Jeter can't recruit or coach by any means. I think he could be a very good coach and his recruiting class does look good. I don't really put too much weight on last year, since we lost a ton of seniors.

This year and especially next year will be the first opportunity for Jeter to show what he can do with the talent he assembled. I'm really high on Tim Flowers also and I'm excited to see how plays this year.

I wasn't saying UW-M is in bad shape (sorry if it wasn't clear enough). I'm just saying Pearl's team that went to the Sweet 16 was amazing (and he had some Bo Ryan carryovers). I am concerned about how long we will have Jeter.

What other schools were in the running for Wade? I thought there were only 3 schools (MU, Illinois State, and DePaul).

Cool. Come on out to a game or two. $10 for a decent seat ain't bad.

I know they still have 5 game packs avilable for $50, and those do include a ticket for the Madison game.

Also ALL away games will be televised live on TWS (Time Warner Sports) this year. Home games will be tape delayed on TWS.

Note: No, I do not work for the Athletic Department. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Nor am I a cheerleader. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Just a big college hoops fan, who is excited for the season to finally start.

As am I concerned about how long we can keep Jeter. I've actually sent him a couple of emails in the past, one time I added something asking him to please stay at least 'till this years class graduates. I really think this group of freshman has the potential to be better than the group that took us to the Sweet 16. Just my opinion of course, but on paper they have the potential to be. It's going to be fun watching them grow up that's for sure.

I'm not sure what other schools were in the running for D.Wade. Not a Marquette fan at all, so don't pay much attention to them.

P.S. And don't worry about it. No offense taken. Hope to see you at a game.

I'll actually be taking my boss to the Valpo game this year. He's a Valpo alumnus.

If anyone is interested a group of us who live on the west side of the metro area, will be meeting at Amann's at 91st and Beloit this year for away games. Well mostly those of us who do not have Time Warner Cable. First meeting is next Wednesday, November 14, for the Ball State game.

valpocrewsader, the game at Valpo is January 10, come on out.

Regarding Avo. There is a lot of speculation regarding why.

Apparently he missed some practices and off season conditioning. So wasn't putting forth the effort the other guys on the team were.

Some say he has people talking to him, telling him he should be featured on this team and has NBA potential, so he/they were not happy with the playing time he was told he was going to get this year.

  • 1 month later...

I guess I just wanted to give some credit to the UWM men's basketball team. They lost their best returning scorer in Avery Smith. Their best scorer, Torre Johnson (averaging about 17ppg), was kicked off the team. Their best and most highly recruited freshman in Tim Flowers has been permanently benched along with fellow freshman Kevin Johnson. And Roman Gentry is gone as well. I was seriously readying myself for about 7 or 8 wins for the entire season when all that happened. But what did they do? They are currently on a 6 game winning streak culminating in a tough road win at Valpo (who I consider the 2nd best team in the Horizon). A top 3 finish in the Horizon is not out of the question. And I think they may actually have a chance to make a little noise in the Horizon League Tournament. Nice work guys.

I apologize for the jinx.
