Andruw Jones

aracko

How much is Jones expected to get this year in free agency? Id love to see the Brewers approach him with a multi year contract offer. Putting his Glove in CF, and his Bat in the middle of the lineup would improve this team in multiiple dimensions.

Weeks would have to remain at leadoff, and I dont view that as a problem. Bill Hall could either transition to LF or go back to his utility roll. Who cares if he likes it or not. If my boss moves my cubicle, I just have to deal with it. So should he.

I'd feel a lot better about that idea if:

- his contract expectations weren't so absurd,

- his BA & power production hadn't gone through that absolute nosedive, and

- he weren't the strikeout machine at the plate -- we don't need more windmills.

I agree on the Bill Hall stuff.

Please refrain from the HGH jokes, and pardon me for a bit of optimism, but could anyone see him having a complete resurgence once he leaves Atlanta, ala Roger Clemens? He's on the right side of 30, despite what Jayson Starks says, he is still a top tier defensive CF, and while he does whiff a great deal, he packs a lot of punch in that bat. If the market were to dry up on him (there are only so many contracts to go out to Hunter/Rowand/Cameron....), I wouldn't at all be opposed to Ned making a personal call to the Curacaoan and perhaps seeing if he wants to take a one or two year deal. Put Hall in left with Mench and Gross and have him occasionally spell Braunski. Then again, I seriously think the Yanks are going to try to pick him up, though why I have no clue. Make Godzilla a DH?

Andruw's power fell way off over the second half of '06, which he followed up with a disappointing '07. Do I think he could bounce back? Yes. Am I at all interested in being the team that finds out? No, I am not.

He just looks like a guy on the way down, I wish him well, but I honestly don't expect him to be worth what someone is going to give him.

he's like one hoagie away from being fat and useless in the field...he's nothing compared to what he was 5 years ago...and his bat was never as good as it was in 2006...

h'es gonna be sammy sosa for the rest of his career....240/.310/.450

and someone's gonna give him 7 years at 16-20 million apiece for that

I really question if Jones will get the massive contract you think he'll get pogokat. Jones will get some nice money, i just doubt he gets some big 5-6-7 year deal. Scouts for other teams can see the weight he's put on and how it's hurt his at one time amazing defense.

agreed, danzig. Methinks Pogo hates so hard that his brain bubbles! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I'd bet on Jones getting a 4+ year deal, but I'd be shocked if he got 7. If we're talking about this on a Brewers fan forum, I guarantee you the scouting community at large is fully aware of why not to ink Andruw for that long.

Yea, guess that's all true re. the other contracts. Wouldn't those contracts make teams wary? The business of comparing contract status of Player A with a different skill set from Player B drives me bonkers. Is Andruw Jones 'worth' $X+1 mil. because Pierre is overpaid at $X mil.? It seems a counterintuitive way to evaluate/compare. If that's the 'logic,' it's no wonder salaries are escalating at this rate. Good call on SF, RyDogg. That's a very good guess.

  • 3 weeks later...

I am thinking Jones is a prime canidate for a 1 year 12 Million dollar deal. His numbers last year were really down and I think he might want to prove the critics wrong. I wonder if Milwaukee contacted him and offered him 1 year at 12 million if he would consider it, looking forward to the bigger payday at the end of the season?

If Billy Hall would then move to LF, it would provide us with a lineup that could not be rivaled anywhere. Especially if Yost was to get a little wild with the lineup card.

1. Weeks

2. Braun

3. Prince

4. Jones

5. Hart

6. Hall

7. Hardy

8. Pitcher

9. Kendall

Hitting kendall 9th provides the Brewers with some guys who will be on base for Braun , who gets more ABs hitting in the 2 hole. Teams have to pick their poison of Braun, Prince, and Jones.....Hardy has the power to clean up the bases and the baserunning skills to move up on a sacrifice by the pitcher. Its unconventional but would seem to be really effective.

I like Andrew jones. he had a down year in 2007. So did Bill hall. Brewers fans expect Bill hall to bounce back to his 2006 numbers. So why can't Andrew Jones ? I know all the negatives about Andrew Jones. Let's not bring up the fact that he played through a nagging injury the entire year where others would have just gone on the Dl and said bye bye.

on a positive note, jones hit lefties and righties at about the same clip batting lefties at .225 and righties .221, so he would not have to be platooned. Jones has a career batting average of .263. Prior to last year, he hit 262, 263 and 261. he kos a lot, but also gets his fair share of walks. jones is never going to be a .300 hitter. he is what he is - kind of like Sexson.

it's disheartening to read brewer fans writing this guy off as being too expensive. if the Washington Nationals can afford him and are interested in him, surely the brewers can also afford him especially with the savings from the loss of jenkins and cordero. What would it take? 4-5 years as he goes after that last big paycheck? $12 million a year? $15 million? The brewers can afford that type of money. The brewers can afford to sign a big name player. What the brewers can't afford is to sign a big name bust. They can't afford to sign a high risk player. is jones a high risk? yes.

on another positive note, he sure makes crawford and francoer look good (see other threads).

Given a choice, I'd rather have Crawford over jones. Given a choice, I'd rather have a lot more speed and defense and a lot less power.

Jones is a guy I would only be willing to go 1 year on. The fact that he is still available makes me think that he just might consider it if its a fair $ amount. I think he would love another "free agent year". Plus I am not sure how that works but if he ended up leaving next season, the Brewers would be able to enjoy a 1st round pick as compensation id imagine.

I'd give Jones a one year deal for $12 million in a second. I understand he's getting some hate here, but I went to several Braves games this year and if his defense is bad sign me up for some bad defense. He's still a stud in CF. He can cover a ton of ground and his arm is still easily in the top quarter of CFs -- at least. I know some people have stated he's arrogant and he's this or that, but he's actually a nice guy to be around. He wasn't pleased by any means with his performance in 2007. I know his batting stats weren't that great and that does deserve some attention, but I think to criticize Jones for his defense and how he's "fat" is way off track. Talk about a "3B" who plays in Florida if you want to go into that. Jones is an upgrade over Hall in CF by quite a bit in my opinion and that's not a knock on Hall.

imho, I'd much prefer batting Kendall 8th as it could maximise his offensive strengths. I think a big reason for Kendall's OBP improvement (plus drawing more BBs) after his move from the AL, was that he got to bat before the pitcher. I think Kendall could make a very good 8th hitter for the Brewers, really hope Yost stick with him at 8th and don't bat him anywhere else.

Put me on the side that Jones is headed downward and will not be worth the money he is going to get from someone. He could be some GM's Jeffery Hammonds.

Sorry, but this is a terrible comparison. Jeffrey Hammonds? Come on. Jeffrey Hammonds had one good year (his contract year) and the Brewers got burned. Andruw Jones had his worst year this past year (his contract year) and is still only 30 years old. If anything guys like Jones are the types of guys I'd love to see the Brewers gamble on...stars that are coming off down years. His body of work is impressive.
