GM's (but not Melvin) Vote in Favor Of Instant Replay

PeaveyFury

A million percent in favor of this, give each manager 2 challenges, if he's right he gets 1 back, for a total of 3 challenges per game, that should be plenty.

I completely disagree with the notion umpires are part of the game, let's get this stuff right, the NBA has it & the football system is wonderful, who knows what happens if the Packers don't challenge that 32 yard reception at the end of the game last week.....

Purists can't be naive to this, LET"S GET IT RIGHT!!

I don't even know if a challenge system is needed. If a ball is really close to the foul pole and it had the distance, take a look at it. I'm guessing on average a replay would be needed 0.5 times a game, if that.

What sort of weight does a GM vote hold anyway?

I assume the owner vote is the one that actually matters.

The GM vote is advisory. The article states, "Replay eventually would have to be approved by the unions for players and umpires, and possibly in a vote by owners." I'd assume the commissioner would have something to say about this, too.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

And the thing is, the beauty of baseball is the simplicity of the call. There's not 10 bodies around the ball like football, you have the ball, and you have the line, or the pole, or a player's glove. Most of the time it's going to be very easy to tell what the correct call is.

Was it the Sox/Tribe series that had a couple of questionable "Pesky Pole" calls? I couldn't figure them out, even with the replay.

I suppose it might be ok, though.

I think that had as much to do with the insistance of the guys running the games of showing the wrong camera angle on a consistent basis. They kept showing one halfway down the first base line in the stands (which has a terrible angle to view that type of play)

As opposed to the one halfway down the third base line (which has the perfect line of sight)

I have no problem with replay so long as it's handled quickly

College football has replay and they almost always manages to get plays replayed in about a minute or less. Unlike pro football, the replay is done upstairs and a ruling is sent down quickly, the right call is then handed out. Baseball should be able to figure out a similar system.

Some people have suggested that replay will actually speed up the game because they won't need to waste time arguing with umpires.

I doubt this will be the case -- If Derrek Lee hits a 3 run HR late in a game, and it gets reversed -- Lou Pinella is still going to throw a 10 minute fit.

Pinella's fit will be shorter because he will know that the umpires have seen replays and it will be harder for him to justify arguing the call. But if there was no replay, the opposing manager's fit would be even longer because he will have known that Derek Lee's three-run HR was either foul or never cleared the fence.

More than the time issue, I am concerned primarily about the integrity of the competition. There is just no excuse for blown calls in this day and age of technology.

Do you remember when the Cardinals lost a championship in 1985 because of a blown call? ESPN just recently did a story about how that umpire still gets death threats to this day. It's just bad for the game.

I guess I disagree -- I don't think Lou has a lot of rational/problem solving hit points. I'm sure he'll just scream at the replay official from the pitcher's mound.

Don Dekinger and Jorge Orta -- I don't think the replay will ever be used for plays at 1b.

what about those games that aren't being televised? would they use the "stadium feed" for the replays? We all know that the "stadium feed" is not the best as far as production values, so that could work against Instant Replay.
