GM's (but not Melvin) Vote in Favor Of Instant Replay

The GM's voted. I assume this was just a recommendation on their part? I'd also assume the commissioners office, the umpires and the team owners will have a say too. Interesting though to say the least.

I actually wouldn't mind an NFL style replay with a limited number of challenges for all plays other than ball/strike calls.

I don't see any reason why you can't review whether a ball is caught or trapped by an outfielder, or whether a runner touches home before a tag is applied.

I don't like it all that much. The only way I think it would be fine to use it is for balls that are clearly over the fence, but are close to the foul pole. Any other use doesn't make that much sense to me. You couldn't use it on balls that were judged to be home runs but then were found to hit off the top of the fence or something, there wouldn't be a good way to go about deciding where players should be on base.

I vote yes, but only for fair/foul (HR's).

Luckily my vote doesn't count.

Well it is impossible to undo the action that happens if an umpire calls a trapped ball a caught one. If a runner got picked off w/o tagging on a ball such as that, you would

have to rework all of that stuff as well.

With the limited amount of times it could possibly be used, I definitely agree with it. It will be interesting to see some of the "fan interference" calls that will need to be made. Part of what makes replay in the NFL successful is the fact that discretionary calls are not reviewable. It's possible that a fan interference call could be discretionary, so I'll be interested to see how they handle those.

I think the biggest thing that Selig and the 5 GM's that voted No are worried about is that this is obviously just a first step towards reviewing many other aspects of the game. I think they're hoping that this doesn't open the floodgates.

If I had Braun's pee in my fridge I'd tell everybody.

It was the GMs that voted, i.e. DM not MA.

I think its pretty unlikely to have a borderline HR call in a game. I could see perhaps in the WS or playoffs, but I can't

imagine another official showing up each game for this sort of thing

It'll be interesting to see the mechanics of it. Who calls for a replay? What type of evidence does it take to overturn the call? Who actually reviews the play? Is there a time limit on how long the review takes? There are way to many unanswered questions that need to be resolved before I can be on board with it or not.
There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

Ryan Braun may have benefitted by that mechanism in the last regular season game.

The fact that it's applied in very limited circumstances strikes me as a good thing. Especially for starting up a program like this. I expect we'll be hearing the phrase "Replay Rule Double" at some point.

I used to be opposed to replay but after seeing several important important calls go the wrong way, especially on Home Runs/Fan interference, it seems like a good idea to implement this. It isn't taking power away from the umpires, as it is very difficult for them (in the infield) to see what is going on by the fences. There would probably only be about 1 replay review every 5-10 games or so.

As for the other rules, like limiting visits to the mound and the number of times the batter can step out of the box, I think they are all great and anything that speeds up the game should be considered.

I agree with having instant replay. There is no need for "human error" anymore. It's they year 2007 and our technology is amazing.

Hopefully they will expand the use of replay and overturn other bad calls as well.

I'm hoping they can figure out an electronic strike zone in the near future, as well.

You are the devil. I fully expect an electronic strike zone to be implemented on December 21st, 2012 - officially marking the beginning of the apocolypse.

I'd like to see this go through, but only for homerun calls. Anything more will slow the game down and alter how it is played.

I heard on the radio today an opinion that replay should be used safe/out calls as well because Matt Holliday should've been out at home plate during the playoff game versus SD, but that same game shouldn't have even gone into extra innings, if they would have made a correct homerun call earlier in the game.

Some people have suggested that replay will actually speed up the game because they won't need to waste time arguing with umpires. I think the game will be played the same. Throw the ball, hit the ball, and catch the ball.

• The holdouts in the vote to support limited use of instant replay (which passed 25-5) were the Reds, Cubs, Astros, Brewers and Twins.

Interesting.

It's an NL Central conspiracy (the Twins wish they were in the NL Central http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif)
