More 'roid/HGH revelations: Matt Williams, Jose Guillen, Ismael Valdez

Recommended Posts

I have a feeling we're going to hear more of this stuff as people dig deeper and deeper. As much as I hate it, I'd love to actually hear someone step up and say, "yeah, I did it", as opposed to deny, deny, deny. To me, as much as I think doing this is wrong, someone who stands up and takes the blame gets bumped up a little higher in my book. Not much higher than pond scum, but about there.

I think Giambi was as close as anyone will come to admitting and apologizing for useing them. I do give him a little credit for that but since he didn't refund the money he made via the needle very little.

Given the landscape these days I think both media and legal investigations will have a bigger inpact on cleaning up the steroid mess than testing will. It's a lot harder to cover up a paper trail than it is a cup of urine.

Anyone ever hear of Jose Canseco?

He didn't apolagize for using them. In fact the only reason he admitted using them was out of spite and bitterness. I couldn't care less if someone admits to it after nothing can happen to them. So, in his case, I don't view him in a better light than if he had denied.

David Segui admitting to using HGH, but has claimed it was with a prescription to aid recovering from injuries. Given his injury history, I'd say it didn't help much.

Caminitti admitted to doing steroids too. For the same reasons Segui gave.

Some prescriptions for the three players were written not by a doctor but by a Florida dentist whose license later was suspended for fraud and incompetence, records show. The same dentist prescribed growth hormone to Paul Byrd, the Cleveland Indians pitcher previously identified by The Chronicle as buying nearly $25,000 worth of growth hormone through the same anti-aging clinic.

I'm guessing these guys "seeing" the same dentist as Byrd isn't coincidental. Oddly, I don't think there has been a peep from Byrd since the end of the ALCS.

There have actually been a number of the "smaller" guys busted by the testing system soon after it was implemented that actually admitted that they did something wrong and apologized for making a bad decision. The guy I'm thinking of is Mike Morse from the Mariners (link to the story), but there have been others that just took the penalty without a fight.

The whole Guillen thing doesn't surprise me...he's always been a little on the crazy side, so maybe some of that can be attributed to roid rage or any other type of hormone flare-up. Matt Williams was always pretty suspicious to me, too, especially when he was trying to continue playing at the age of 37. I could definitely understand him buying HGH in an attempt to prolong his career (he ended up being pretty close to the 400 career HR mark, so maybe he was trying to hold on to get to that point).

to assist players when they get caught we should just number the excuses in an easy reference sheet.

1- I unknowingly took a tainted over the counter substance.

2- It was for an injury and was perscribed by a doctor.

3- The test results are innacurate.

4- No speak english.

5- I was told it was Flaxseed oil.

Did I miss any?

all they have to do is refer to #3 on the universal excuse sheet and everyone would know which avenue they will take. It would save plenty of time.
