Mike Jones just two runs short of a Dave Bush first inning of the season, and like Bush, pitching well subsequently.

LHP Zach Braddock is picking up the suspended game for the Power, not sure who will start the nightcap.

Final: Mississippi (Braves) 8, Huntsville 2

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Link, text follows --

Braves Battle Through Elements to Beat Stars

Dan Smith worked five solid innings and Mississippi used two four-run frames to pull away in Saturday afternoon?s 8-2 win over Huntsville in the third game of the season-opening five-game series at a frigid Joe Davis Stadium in front of 986 dedicated fans who withstood the below 40 degree temperatures and gusting winds. The Braves have won the last two games by outscoring the Stars 13-4 after falling in extra innings on Opening Day.

J.C. Holt opened the game for a third straight day with a hit, a double to left, moved to third base on a Brent Lillibridge single and scored on a Brandon Jones double that pushed Lillibridge to third. Jarrod Saltalamacchia?s ground ball out plated Lillibridge and moved Jones to third before Matt Esquivel walked and Van Pope followed with a double to chase Jones home. Carl Loadenthal completed the rally against starter Mike Jones with a sacrifice fly.

Brendan Katin?s sacrifice fly in the home half of the inning produced the Stars? first run of the day and the only one they have scored in 15 innings covering three starts dating back to last season against Smith. The Mississippi left-hander allowed two hits, did not walk a batter and fanned five to grab the win. He has yielded one earned run on four hits, with 18 strikeouts, in his three turns against Huntsville in which he has two wins and a no-decision.

Jones settled down and retired 11 out of 12 after the Pope double before running into trouble in the fifth. Brandon Jones singled home Holt to push the lead to 5-1 and knock the Huntsville hurler out of the game. Luis Villareal walked Saltalamacchia to load the bases and Esquivel then cleared them with a double over the head of center fielder Steve Moss. The Stars bullpen trio of Villareal, Robert Hinton and Mark DiFelice then blanked the visitors the rest of the way. Huntsville?s bullpen has yielded only two runs in 14 2/3 frames in the first three games of the season.

Jeff Bennett worked two scoreless innings behind Smith and Jeff Eure?s ground out in the ninth scored Katin with the Stars final run against Charlie Morton, the winning pitcher in Friday?s game. Huntsville stranded a runner at third base with less than two outs in the seventh and eighth innings.

The series continues Sunday afternoon with left-hander Manny Parra taking the hill for Huntsville against Braves? southpaw Kelvin Villa. Coverage of the game begins at 1:50 p.m. central time and can be heard locally on SportsRadio 730 WUMP AM and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Huntsville Box Score:

Still just 22 years old, RHP Robert Hinton's an exciting prospect, but after making six starts late last year, he's back in a middle relief role, perhaps a way to ease him into AA...

West Virginia Site Doubleheader Summary:

POWER AND CAPTAINS SPLIT TWIN BILL

The West Virginia Power and Lake County Captains endured an extremely cold weekend that was capped off by a doubleheader on Saturday night. The teams split the twin bill, with the Captains taking game one 6-4, and the Power taking game two 4-3.

The Captains rallied in the first contest to erase a four-run deficit, by scoring six runs in the eighth inning. Prior to the Captains? eighth inning eruption, the Power scored the first four runs of the game. Kenny Holmberg smashed his first home run of the season in the first inning to put the Power ahead 1-0. In the third inning, West Virginia scored three times to take a 4-0 lead. Brent Brewer tripled in Taylor Green and scored on Holmberg?s sacrifice fly before John Alonso delivered a two-out run-scoring single to cap off the three-run frame.

Lake County?s incredible six-run eighth inning started with back to back solo home runs from Matt Whitney and Jared Goedert. Roman Pena walked with the bases loaded later in the inning and Matt McBride capped the rally with a three-run double to give the Captains the lead for good.

The second contest involved a few lead changes. West Virginia scored first on Jimmy Mojica?s solo home run in the bottom of the first inning. The Captains tied it in the third when Alex Castillo reached on a fielder?s choice and knocked in Roman Pena in the process. Lake County jumped ahead 2-1 after Lucas Montero?s RBI single in the fifth inning. The lead didn?t last long as West Virginia tied the game in the bottom of the fifth when Steve Chapman scored on Mojica?s sacrifice fly.

Lake County answered quickly in the top of the sixth inning when Nick Weglarz hit a solo home run to put the Captains back in the lead. In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Power had runners on first and second base with one out when Andy Bouchie hit what appeared to be an inning-ending double play ball, but it went between the legs of Lake County second baseman Adam Davis and allowed Andrew Lefave to score the tying run. John Alonso really made the error sting during the next at-bat when he drove in the go-ahead run on a base hit to give the Power the lead for good.

In game one Paolo Espino (1-0) got the win, Neil Wagner (1) earned the save and D.J. Lidyard (0-1) got the loss. In the second game, Patrick Ryan (1-0) earned the victory, E.J. Shanks (1) retired the side in order to earn the save and Jeanmar Gomez (0-1) got the loss.

The Power will begin a four-game series against the Lakewood BlueClaws at Appalachian Power Park on Monday night. The Power will start with left hander Mike Ramlow (0-0, 0.00). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central).

Florida Today, Daytona News Journal:

The Daytona Cubs broke open a close game with six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning in a 12-4 win against the Brevard County Manatees on Saturday night in Daytona Beach.

One night after struggling at the plate -- striking out 14 times -- in a 3-2 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers affiliate, Daytona's lineup pounded out 16 hits and whiffed only four times. Daytona's batters also drew four walks.

Chris Amador and Robinson Chirinos had three hits apiece for the Cubs (2-1), while Ryan Norwood and Jake Muyco each drove in three runs. Grant Johnson picked up the win, pitching 12/3 innings of scoreless relief.

The Cubs got their swings and also took advantage of four Manatees errors, including one by each of Brevard County's outfielders.

The Cubs knotted the game at 4 with two runs during a fifth inning in which they sent eight batters to the plate. Amador reached on a three-base error by center fielder Charlie Fermaint and scored on Nate Spears' single to left field. Spears ended up at third when left fielder Cole Gillespie missed the ball. Spears later scored after the Cubs loaded the bases and Alberto Garcia was hit by a pitch by Manatees reliever Josh Wahpepah (0-2).

Daytona took the lead with two runs in the sixth. Matt Matulia singled and Amador bunted for a hit before Spears moved the runners over with a sacrifice bunt. Matulia scored on a groundout by Chirinos and Norwood followed with a double to plate Amador.

For the Manatees (1-2), Ryan Crew had two hits, including a double. Ned Yost, Chris Errecart and Mat Gamel finished with two hits apiece.

Wahpepah gave up two runs on three hits in 1 1/3 innings of relief. Brevard County starter Steve Garrison went 4 1/3 innings, allowing four runs and seven hits. He struck out five and walked two.

The two teams square off again on Monday at 7:00 PM (6:00 Central) in Daytona.

Jones' arm a plus even if result negative for Stars

Pitcher recovering from injury hits 93 mph with fastball

By SKIP VAUGHN

For The Huntsville Times, skipv@htimes.com

Despite the final numbers, Saturday's outing against the Mississippi Braves was a triumph for Huntsville Stars pitcher Mike Jones.

The Stars' 8-2 loss to the Mississippi Braves marked his comeback from four years of battling with injuries.

He had surgery to his right throwing shoulder in October 2004 and again in April 2005. All that followed a slight tear in a ligament in his elbow in July 2003 in Huntsville, which resulted in cautionary rehabilitation.

Now he's back. Jones had a good spring and made his first start of the season Saturday.

He took the loss before an announced crowd of 986 at Joe Davis Stadium. But there was optimism afterward.

"From an overall feeling standpoint, I was happy," Jones said. "I was very pleased with how my body's responding. But overall there's a pitching mental part of the game. That's what I need to work on right now. The mental, just the pitching. There's a battle that goes on between the batter and the pitcher every time you pitch. Basically I need to pitch with a little more conviction and aggression.

"From a physical standpoint, everything feels terrific. I'm just looking to go out and build the pitch count and give our guys a chance to win. We've got a good team."

Jones threw 71 pitches, 48 for strikes. He mostly threw his fastball, which reached 93 mph. He went 4 1/3 innings with two strikeouts and one walk, allowing eight hits and seven runs (six earned). He settled down after a four-run first inning.

"Jonesy made some giant strides today," Stars pitching coach Rich Sauveur said. "I'm really happy, even after that (first) inning. He came back and made some quality pitches. Overall, I thought he did an outstanding job. I think he threw much better than what his line says."

Jones, 23, a 6-foot-4, 220-pounder from Phoenix, Ariz., patiently answered questions about his outing after completing his stretching exercises in the training room.

His demeanor confirmed what Stars pitcher Manny Parra had said about him before the game. Parra, a left-hander, will start today's game at 2:05 p.m. against Mississippi.

"He's just a straight-forward guy," Parra said. "All-American, comes from a super family. He was raised Mormon."

The Stars (1-2) didn't have a good outing defensively nor at the plate Saturday. They committed two errors and produced only two runs on six hits.

"It's a tough game," said Stars hitting coach Sandy Guerrero, filling in for manager Don Money who was at home in New Jersey for personal reasons. "Offensively, we didn't do enough to win the game. We committed two errors. The errors that we're making, they're costing us some runs. We've got to play better defense and make the routine plays."

Hernan Iribarren went 2-for-3 at the plate for Huntsville. Mel Stocker also had two hits, with a triple, and scored a run. Brendan Katin doubled and scored in the ninth.

Dan Smith got the win for the Braves (2-1). He went five innings with five strikeouts and no walks. He allowed two hits and one unearned run.

SUN SHOWS UP, BUT NOT TO PLAY

What few people showed up today for a Magnetic Schedule giveaway were still talking about the snow that fell during the 7th inning of last night's game........ Well, the sun came brightly out today, warming the seats for the first hour of the game, making the ballpark experience comparatively more tolerable than it was last night, but the temperature at game time was 38°, five degrees colder than the start time the previous night, and the coldest temperature I have ever sat in to watch a game.

After three games, the Stars' bats are as cold as the weather. They're swatting .208 after another six-hit game ....... They got their runs today eight innings apart on a sacrifice fly and a fielder's choice......... An extra-base hit here and there, but after 27 innings, the Stars have 20 hits and 14 walks with just eight runs to show for it. They have left 25 on base........ After a 2-1 start against this same team last year, they scored 10 runs on 15 hits and 17 walks and left 22 on base....... Hopefully, the rotation (0-2, 7.43) will do a better job once the warmer weather shows up.

A lot of line drives and fly balls to the outfield were coming off Greenville bats this afternoon....... Mike Jones was socked hard in the 1st inning....... J.C. Holt, for the 3rd straight day, opened the game with a hit on Jones' 2nd pitch, lining a double inside the left field line...... He's now off to a 7-for-14 start and the Braves have scored in six of the eight innings he has gotten a hit........ On a 2-2 pitch, Brent Lillibridge hit a hard grounder through the right side into left for a hit, sending Holt to 3rd....... Brandon Jones fouled a ball off, then poked a soft double that rolled into left, scoring Holt and sending Lillibridge to 3rd......... Jarrod Saltalamacchia's grounder on a 1-1 pitch deep on the infield was momentarily dropped by Hernan Iribarren, but he recovered to get the first out of the inning, time enough to score Lillibridge to make it 2-0...... After Matt Esquivel walked on six pitches, Van Pope lined a double to the gap in left-center, scoring Jones and sending Esquivel to third........ Carl Loadenthal's fly ball deep to center completed the scoring, but it took Jones 25 pitches to get out of the inning.

Like Steve Hammond the previous night, Jones settled down in the 2nd inning, retiring the side, and was strong in the 3rd and 4th innings as well. In those three innings of work, he threw 35 pitches, 22 for strikes.

Then the roof caved in again in the 5th, as the Braves again started spraying line drives left and right......... A one-out single to right by Holt, then a double to right-center, a single, an error on a pickoff attempt at 1st, a walk to Saltalamacchia, and finally, a bases-clearing double by Luis Esquivel over the head of Steve Moss. It was all over in the 5th inning and it was just mop-up work for Robert Hinton and Mark DiFelice.

The Stars tried to get back in the ballgame after the Braves took a 4-0 lead in the top of the 1st.. Mel Stocker and Iribarren both laid down bunt hits to the left side on Dan Smith's first three pitches. Hernan might have been thrown out, but 3rd baseman Van Pope took too long a look to second, thinking perhaps he had a chance to get the lead runner, and it gave Hernan that half-step extra that got him on first......... A balk before Smith threw his first pitch to Moss moved both runners into scoring position, but the Stars could only manage one run in the inning, and that on Brendan Katin's deep fly to left, his 2nd sacrifice fly in as many games, a trick last accomplished by Adam Heether, September 1-2, 2005.

The Stars wore their whites for the first time this season, my favorite uniform. The pitchers call the shots here, and most of the time, it's the reds I see on the field........ Hernan is 4-for-11 (.308) after three games...... It's left-handers again on Sunday afternoon as the Braves' Kelvin Villa faces off against Manny Parra. Villa was 8-6, 3.83 for Myrtle Beach (Carolina) last year. Let's hope it's a Happy Easter for the Stars as well as for you.

Mojica shakes off cold, leads Power past Lake County

By Mike Whiteford

Charleston Gazette Staff Writer

As he stepped to the plate Saturday night for his first at-bat as a member of the Milwaukee Brewers organization, Jimmy Mojica?s prospects didn?t look encouraging.

?I couldn?t feel my hands,?? said Mojica, alluding to the 30-degree weather. ?It was my first at-bat. I was nervous. I?m glad it?s over with.??

Despite the nerves, cold hands and swirling snowflakes, the Power shortstop rocketed a home run to left-center field leading off the first inning and added a game-tying sacrifice fly in the fifth, helping the Power to a 4-3 victory over the Lake County Captains at Appalachian Power Park.

On a night of intermittent snow showers and knife-life breezes, a crowd of about 200 attended.

Earlier on Saturday, the Captains rallied for six runs in the eighth inning for a 6-4 victory in the completion of a suspended game, which had been halted in the third inning on Friday night.

Unlike most of his Power teammates, Mojica, a native of Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, was not drafted by the Milwaukee organization but spent last year with St. Joseph, Mo., of the Independent American Association, where he played well enough to impress Brewer scouts.

An everyday shortstop at St. Joseph last year, he made his first start for the Power in Saturday night?s game and expects to fill a utility role.

?I?ll play wherever my manager wants me ? second, short, third.?? said Mojica, who played two seasons at Kansas City (Kan.) Community College.

After Mojica produced his team?s first two runs with the homer and sacrifice fly, Lake County?s Nick Weglarz led off the sixth inning with a homer to left for a 3-2 Captains lead.

But the Power responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Andrew Lefave and Chuckie Caufield opened with singles and, one out later, Lefave came home and Caufield took third on an error by second baseman Adam Davis.

John Alonso followed with an infield single to the shortstop hole, bringing home Caufield with the decisive run.

Davis? error was the Captains? third of the game; the Power did not make an error.

?We made all the plays, and we were playing in the same conditions as they were,?? said Mojica. ?A ground ball is still a ground ball. You?ve got to make plays.??

Reliever E.J. Shanks pitched a perfect seventh ? the game was scheduled for just seven innings ? to preserve the victory for Patrick Ryan, who yielded two runs in two innings but picked up the win.

Power starter Alex Periard struck out the side in the first inning and allowed just two hits and a run in four innings.

POWER POINTS: The Power is off today and will play host to Lakewood for four games beginning at 7:05 PM (6:05 Central) Monday. ... If Mojica eventually reaches the majors, he won?t be the first former Independent League player to pass through Charleston and advance to the big leagues. Pitcher Brendan Donnelly, a 1995 Charleston Alley Cat, spent five seasons with the Angels, including some playoff and World Series appearances, and is now with the Red Sox. ... Mojica is related to former Yankee Bernie Williams. Mojica?s mother is Williams? aunt. ... As an acknowledgement of the annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, the Power wore pink uniform tops Saturday night, and the bases, too, were pink. The Race for the Cure, a breast cancer fund-raising 5-kilometer event, is scheduled for May 5 on Kanawha Boulevard. ... The pink bases stood out better than white ones in Saturday?s snow showers.
