The Big Ten Network stole my car

logan82

Just because you rent doesn't mean you can't get a dish. The FCC ruled that landlords can't stop tenents from putting in a dish even in an apartment as long as the dish is in a private area like a balcony. Of course most landlords just tell their tenants no and nobody ever bothers to check it out.

I have had DirecTV for 7 years now and have no complaints.

I just noticed an article in the paper from yesterday saying that Charter is raising rates in Madison by $5/month starting Dec. 1st and still not offering the Big 10 Network. Kind of blows their whole we don't want to raise rates a $1.10 or whatever they can negotiate argument out of the water.

I agree with BuckyTuba, if you don't want to switch to a dish then just go out for the games you will miss. It may not be your first choice but that is what choice is all about. I know I made the choice that made the most sense for me and I get the Big 10 network in glorious HD.

The cable companies don't deserve sympathy from anyone. They are the ones that are unwilling to negotiate. BTN has decreased the asking price (was $1.10, but they have been making deals in the $0.90 range), and they are only demanding that they be on basic cable in the 8-state conference "footprint". They are willing to budge and accept a spot on the digital sports tier in other parts of the country.

Comcast, Time Warner, and Charter are the devil incarnate. They have a monopoly in their operating areas and like to squeeze their customers. This has been going on forever.

Luckily, we're starting to hit them where it hurts - the pocketbook. Check out this article, where Comcast announced that they had seen a decrease of 65,000 customers in Q3, which led to its stock falling 10%. I don't think they're going to keep letting that happen.

Memorial Union and Union South are showing the game on big screen TVs.

The Charter increase that I also read about in yesterday's paper doesn't apply to my tired old (yet strangely reliable, so far) expanded basic package. But yeah, that move really doesn't smack of any effort to improve PR.

They could go to a BWW or TGIFs

Every waiter/waitress dream- free soda refills, a basket of breadsticks and a 35 cent tip for 3 hours.http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif

That's cool Hawing- those places will be rockin'. I noticed charter added the NHL network or something like that on channel 422. I'll be diggin' that.

Not sure when people decided that it was their birth right to watch EVERY Badger game. Back in the "Dark Days", or the "Don Morton era", before all the bandwagon "I bleed red and white" folks came aboard, you were lucky to see a Badger live telecast once or twice a year. The only way you could watch them usually was to turn on the rebroadcast on PBS at 10 P.M..

Seriously, there are more important things to get bent out of shape about. Never thought I would here whining that exceeded the NFL Network crap from last fall, but Badger fans this week have made that look like nothing. If you don't like it, get a dish or go to B dubs or a bar to watch the game. The radio would work too.

Just because TV coverage was bad 20 years ago doesn't mean people shouldn't want good coverage now, when most tv companies carry 100's of channels, compared to 20 or so during the Morton era.

And yes, there are more important things to get "bent out of shape" about. But this thread isn't about those things, it's about Badger tv coverage.

Yeah, I see DirecTV added that as well. I've been watching some of their "greatest games" features.

Back to the topic....

For those in Madison with children, I heard (you may want to verify this) that the Rocky Rococo on Mineral Point Rd. is showing Saturday's game on their big screen. There is a play area (sort of like Chuck E. Cheese) for the kids to entertain themselves while you watch the game.

Hey, I got it! Party at my place!

You bring the beer, I'll show the game. A 6-pack entry fee will be charged.

For those with kids, I have a swing set.

Brilliant!

I remember those days well. I'd already know the score of the game, but still wanted to see the Veer lead the mighty Badgers to another 47-3 loss.

And it would only compound the excitement if Wisconsin made that FG early in the game. We scored first! We scored first! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/tongue.gif

I remember a game vs. Miami back in those days, and we kicked an early field goal to make it 3-0. "We're beating Miami! We're beating Miami!" Final score.... 51-3.

It sucks that there's a big fight over all of this, but I made my decision a year ago. I went back to DirecTv as opposed to cable. It would be nice if there was competition, as opposed to one cable company per city to have a monopoly, as I think competition is better for consumers. That's why I'm watching the game today! I exercised my choice!

I remember that one vividly....

By the way, RoCo, I don't think that you need a dedicated land line for DirecTV service any more. My receivers are not hooked up to one (I don't have one). I'm pretty sure that requirement was just for PPV stuff. Because mine isn't hooked to a phone, I can't order PPV with a remote, but I can order online.

As I listen to this game get better and better I continue to get angier and angier at the BTN and Charter. Both are to blame and the only ones that lose are the fans.

Actually, don't get angry. The announcers (Thom Brennaman and Charles Davis) are horrible.

As great as my distaste is for cable companies, the fact that BTN happend to decrease their demans by 0.20 doesn't mean anything to me. Their demands are ridiculous and they have no basis in reality. Why would they think they should get a better deal than ESPN? They're a limited draw, with a couple meaningful FB and BB games a year. Gimmee a break.

I caught the game today at a bar/restaurant in Verona. The place was just packed. It was standing room only for the most part. I'm sure the local bar owners are thrilled the BTN hasn't settled with Time Warner or Charter yet. It's great for their business.

Does anyone have a link to what each channel charges cable companies to carry them? I'd gladly trade all of the CNN channels I get for the Big Ten Network.
