Megathreads?

I wonder if bf's forums can be a little cleaner/easier to access by employing megathreads more frequently. For example, this offseason in the 'Trade...' forum, we're going to see countless threads on individual players, even when another - seemingly fitting - thread (like the 'OF Possibilities' thread) already exists. I understand that what I'm asking essentially amounts to more policing by the mods - at first - but I think overall it'd make at least that forum ('Trades') much more readable and enjoyable.

Maybe make a test-run of it in there? Just a thought/suggestion.

Ahhh, irony.. she's such a sassy wench! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Also, I second Katuluu's point 100 times. So, in reality, I two-hundredth his point. In addition to streamlining, it'd get some viewers that may have otherwise not ventured there (when "Team A acquires Player X" is in the ML forum).

I like the Trade Rumors forum just how it is. I'm also with Joe in that I hate super long threads. Once a thread gets over 5 pages I really start to lose interest and stop looking in it - that is what I call messy. Not specific posts on potential targets.

This is the time of year when the Trade Rumors/Proposals forum heats up. The mods can certainly keep an eye on the dynamics over there.

I think there are times when the megathreads beat the alternative:

  1. When the same discussion continues to pop up in multiple threads.
  2. When the topic is long-standing in nature, it can be cool to be able to refer back to see how circumstances and opinions have changed.

At other times, when discussion can stay very specific, then of course, multiple threads would seem better.

I guess the bottom line is that this a case by case thing that's certainly open for discussion.

One thing we have going for us now is the ability to split and merge threads. This feature also gives us the ability to "move" posts to threads where they fit better. This sure beats 'yelling' at people to stay on topic or to post in such and such thread. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

I don't know, I find "mega-threads" to be incredibly annoying and I almost never read them. They're just too long, clumsy, and hard to find information in.

I second this thought.

and about the Sheets rumor thread, I posted this in the thread....

So now we have to talk about a Carl Crawford trade rumor in a pitching thread? I have a slight issue with the locking of a thread about a specific trade rumor and moving it to a general thread.

If the rumor expands to include position players, can that thread be unlocked? The precedent BF.net is setting is now any trade that may involve us either trading for pitching or trading away a pitcher must be discussed in this thread.

God help us if there are two or three rumors bumping around at the same time.

I've copied the same to the BF.net issues forum. Just something for the mods to consider.

We already had a thread on trading Sheets, we already had a thread on Carl Crawford, now we added a thread about trading Sheets for Crawford - it wouldn't take much at all to end up with three threads essentially discussing one issue.

Is there some benefit to this?

The 'Sheets thread' that is being used was one that was started as a question of trading pitching or for it that devolved into a Sheets thread. I think adding an actual rumor to a philosophical thread in the middle jumbles things and makes it hard to follow. I think if there's an actual rumor that comes up, it deserves it's own thread, IMO.

i don't like the big threads, normally when i see a thread is 10+ pages long, it has just turned into arguments about batting average and .ops, and it doesn't even focus on the player anymore. I suppose if the mods update the title all the time, but that just creates more work.

The megathreads would be more tolerable if I could click on the baseball (for new posts) and it would take me to the page that has the oldest new post that I haven't read. That way if I have a vested interest in the thread, I don't have to remember where the last post I read is located.

Just jack your posts/page count way up so that there aren't new pages that often. That way you can just go to the last page. If you don't see any old posts on that page, then you can go back 1. That should be the extent of any navigation you have to do.
