Gifted, I think it's quite the opposite - look at the list of FA SP this offseason. If anything, now's the time when Sheets's value will be as high as it may well get. You can point to how his injuries aren't arm injuries, and compare his production on the field to available FAs, and sell pretty darn high.

According to Peter Gammons....

Baltimore is indeed listening to offers for Bedard, he doesn't say it's likely Bedard will move, but does say the Orioles aren't saying no.

Ditto Ian Snell in Pittsburgh.

Tampa Bay might deal Delmon Young.....if they were getting an arm like Hughes or Buchholz, otherwise, forget it.

Toronto believes Burnett might opt out following the season, so he is in play, Troy Glaus is as well.

Yankees will not move any of their young pitchers to get Peavy, because they fear he may not do as well in the AL, if it switches to Johan Santana, yes, they would move one of those arms if they can reach a trade agreement, and then get him signed to an extension.

Mets are looking high and low for all pitchers, Glavine appears to be gone, and no one knows what the future holds for Pedro, so the press is on for a #1, or at least #2 starter from somewhere.

I keep hearing his name come up and can't believe it. Bedard is a young stud. Does anyone know his contract situation?

Of all the names I have heard mentioned, I think Bedard has the most value. (Santana is for one year and cost a lot. Lincecum is tons of potential - but hasn't lived up to it yet. Peavy is also short term and already pitched in a pitcher friendly park in the NL)

I doubt we would be willing to part with enough talent for Bedard - but I would love to figure out how to get him into a Brewers uniform.

It seems as though Toronto is going into a little rebuilding mode. I wonder if they are going to look to dangle Halladay at all. He had a bit of an off year - but is signed through 2010.

Rumors from mlb4u.com Tons of them today

Here we go

Hitoki Iwase, LHRP--Chunichi Dragons: He plans to re-sign with the Dragons on a 1-year, $3.6M deal. The Yankees, Royals, Cubs, Rockies, Mariners, White Sox, Red Sox, Indians, Rangers, Mets and Padres had all expressed interest in the Japanese free agent reliever. He will likely attempt the jump to MLB next season. The Dragons also offered Iwase a 4-year, $16M deal, but he turned that down.

Carl Crawford, LF--Tampa Bay Rays: Cubs, Angels, Athletics, Twins, Dodgers, Yankees, Brewers and White Sox interested. The Rays have absolutely no interest in trading him. It would take a blockbuster offer for them to consider a trade. According to Mark Healey, the Brewers are trying to work out a three-way deal with the Yankees to acquire Crawford while sending Chris Capuano and/or Ben Sheets to the Yankees.

Masahide Kobayashi, RHRP--Chiba Lotte Marines: He prefers to sign with the Red Sox, Yankees, Cubs or Mariners, but is open to all possibilites, including remaining in Japan. The Rays, Red Sox, Braves and Mariners are interested.

Kazuo Fukumori, RHRP--Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles: He wants to play in the majors next year. He is currently in the US to have his right elbow examined and rehabilitate it because he had surgery on it to remove bone fragments in August. Rays and Royals interested in the Japanese free agent closer. The Eagles have never lost a player to MLB and plan to make one final offer to re-sign him.

Johan Santana, LHSP--Minnesota Twins:

The Twins will consider trading him this winter and definitely in July if he is still there. First, they are trying to sign him to a cotnract extension. Earlier in the year, they offered him a 2-year, $36M deal with an optin year. Their new offer should be for about 5 years, $90M, but reports indicate they might not even offer that much. However, Santana should command closer to 7 years, $150. On the market, he figures to make 8 years, $200M. However, if they fail to re-sign Carlos Silva, the chances of Santana being traded will diminish.

The Mets, Red Sox, Angels, Mariners, Yankees, Cubs, Tigers, White Sox and Dodgers will be among teams that express interest.

The Yankees would offer Melkey Cabrera along with Joba Chamberlain, Phil Hughes or Ian Kennedy. According to MLBTradeRumors.com, the Yankees believe a package of Melky Cabrera, Chien-Ming Wang, and Ian Kennedy will get the Twins to trade Santana. The Twins, however, are targeting Robinson Cano. Ken Rosenthal believes the Mets have no chance because their pitching prospects (Humber and Pelfrey) are not highly regarded.

Carl Pavano, RHSP--New York Yankees: The Yankees will probably pass him through outright or release waivers sometime this winter to create room on the 40-man roster. They still owe him $12.95M, including a buyout on a 2009 option. The Cardinals and Rockies have expressed past interest.

Yorvit Torrealba, C--Colorado Rockies: The Rockies want to re-sign him, but the Mets, Jays, Brewers and Marlins are also interested. The Rockies have offered him a 2-year deal to compete with the Mets' strong interest. Torrealba is seeking a 2-year, $6-8Mish deal with an option. The Marlins and Mets are willing to offer $10M. Torrealba recently bought a Miami-area condo to be closer to his Venezuela home.

Kosuke Fukudome, RF--Chunichi Dragons: The Yankees, Rangers, Padres, Red Sox, Cubs, Giants and White Sox are among teams interested in the Japanese free agent. The Dragons have also offered him a choice of either a 1-year, $3.5M deal or a 4-year, $15M to re-sign. The Hanshin Tigers and Yomiuri Giants are also planning to aggressively pursue him.

Dontrelle Willis, LHSP--Florida Marlins: Marlins are willing to trade him, but his value is really low. They may hold onto him until July while praying for a first-half revival. The Astros, Tigers and Diamondbacks are interested. At the trading deadline the Mets, Yankees, Indians, Rockies, Mariners, Dodgers, Red Sox and Diamondbacks had interest.

Johnny Damon, CF--New York Yankees: Yankees will not trade him. The White Sox and Braves expressed interest.

Last updated: 12:36 PM - Nov 11, 07 by MLB4U.com | Source: Ken Rosenthal | Rated: 3.0837 out of 5

Joe Nathan, CL--Minnesota Twins: If the Twins fail to re-sign Carlos Silva and Torii Hunter and decide to trade Johan Santana, then Nathan also becomes expendable. Nathan is a free agent following next season.

Miguel Cabrera, 3B--Florida Marlins:

The Marlins are willing to trade him and plan to do so at some point this winter. The Red Sox, Giants, Dodgers, Indians, Yankees, White Sox, Tigers and Angels are all interested.

The Angels are considered the current frontrunners. The Marlins want Howie Kendrick, Maicer Izturis/Brandon Wood and Nick Adenhart from the Angels. In the past, Bill Stoneman refused to trade these players, but Tony Reagins may have a different philosophy. The Red Sox would have to move Jacoby Ellsbury with Jon Lester/Clay Buccholz. The Dodgers would have to move Andy LaRoche and Matt Kemp with Clayton Kershaw/Jon Meloan. The Yankees would have to offer Melkey Cabrera along with Phil Hughes, Joba Chamberlain or Ian Kennedy. But since they will not move any of those young pitchers, it will be impossible for the Yankees to acquire him in a straight-up trade. The Padres are not interested. The White Sox can offer only Gio Gonzalez, Jerry Owens and Josh Fields, and that offer falls short of what the Dodgers and Angels have.In the unlikely event they acquire him, the White Sox would play Cabrera in LF.

A team acquiring Cabrera would like want a 72-hour window to work out a long-term deal with him before completing a trade. He is eligible for free agency following the 2009 season. He could command a 7-year, $140M deal.

mlbtraderumors.com has this from Ken Rosenthal

  • The White Sox are legitimately in the mix for Miguel Cabrera, but many stars would have to align for it to get done. Suitors with better prospects would have to balk, and the Sox would have to part with Josh Fields and Gio Gonzalez. Kenny Williams might even have to cash Jon Garland in and turn around and flip that prospect in a Cabrera deal. Regardless, it's clear that Williams is once again thinking big.
  • Let's face it: the Twins aren't retaining free agents Torii Hunter or Carlos Silva. You gotta know when to fold 'em - maybe it's best to punt 2008 and trade both Johan Santana and Joe Nathan now. Rosenthal says that philosophy is gaining some steam in the organization. Both Santana and Nathan are only under contract for one year, but both are signed well below market prices. That means that any mildly competitive team could entertain the notion of acquiring one of them for a big boost. Baseball Prospectus values Santana at $25MM and 8.1 wins next year (he earns $13.25MM). They put Nathan at $15MM and 6 wins (he earns $6MM).
  • The A's are another team that could take one step back in order to take two steps forward. Billy Beane has Joe Blanton and Dan Haren, two solid young pitchers each under team control for three seasons. That's a big advantage over the other frontline names who might be available. Santana and A.J. Burnett have one year. Jake Peavy and Erik Bedard have two. Haren for three years is huge. Blanton is under team control but Haren is actually under contract.
  • The Rays have gotten in touch with Michael Barrett's people. Will Barrett's Type A status become an issue? Only if the Padres dare offer him arbitration. If I had to guess I'd say they won't offer, but it's a close call. Troy E. Renck recently mentioned Barrett has drawn interest from six clubs, perhaps including the Rockies and Marlins. I'm sure the Rockies would not give up their #25 overall pick to the Padres just to sign Barrett. The Marlins' sixth overall pick next year is protected.

If you follow the Crawford link you find yourself at the same place that the original 3 team deal with the Yanks came from. It appears that the discussion on that message board is similar to the discussion here, how much is Crawford actually worth.

In my opinion the trade would benefit the Rays more. Lincecum is younger, cheaper obviously, could potentially be a #1 ace, and I would imagine that he's under their control for 5-6 years?

Crawford is older, 3 seasons left under contract, and carrys a heavier price tag. While he's obviously still a stud, what would the Giants be thinking if they made this trade?

I really can't understand why the Giants would do that. If their looking to move Lincecum they should move him for 2-3 top stud prospects not an older, more expensive player with less years on his contract. Unless they the Giants are thinking in a "win-now" mode and their desperate for offense, but still why would they wana trade a kid who's good NOW?

Brewers255's summary above makes clear an important point many seem to forget about with respect to trades:

Tons of teams may be interested in a player. But the odds of anything happenings are still about 0% unless his current team has any interest in moving the guy.

We're going to hear at some point this off-season how certain teams would love to talk with Doug Melvin about the possibility of trading for Ryan Braun or Prince Fielder. Well, they can dream all they want -- and leak "rumblings" about them in their local media, however that all works -- but those two wouldn't seem to be going anywhere for a long, long time.

Some notes from Phil Rogers today. This isn't really news, more speculation/opinion, but he does have two comments about the Brewers:

http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-071111rogers,1,7585170.column?coll=cs-cubs-headlines

Is it possible the Brewers will non-tender catcher Johnny Estrada? GM Doug Melvin says he's going to look at free-agent catchers, with Paul LoDuca, Jason Kendall, Michael Barrett, Jason LaRue and Yorvit Torrealba seemingly in the picture...

...Nobody asked, but the time is probably right for Melvin to trade Ben Sheets. He has depth with Jeff Suppan, Yovani Gallardo, Carlos Villanueva, Dave Bush, Claudio Vargas, Chris Capuano and Manny Parra.

I'm still pulling for Barrett as the starting catcher next season. If Jason LaRue could get a hold of whatever supplement he was using in '04 and '05 again, he would be good as a backup, too.

I'd be shocked with a non-tender for Estrada, though.

"I'd say that our best chance as of today would be via trade," Colletti said of the Dodgers' wish to add depth to the rotation. He added that he had no such deals in the works.

I would dangle Sheets in front of the Dodgers, as well as Vargas, Capuano and Bush and see what they could fetch.

Would anyone be willing to go after Scott Rolen? I know injuries are a concern, but you wouldn't have to worry about defense and the Cardinals are likely looking for starting pitching which the Brewers have some depth to deal with.

I wouldn't. Great defense but injury prone and he has 3 years and $36 million left.
