Final: Lakewood (Phillies) 9, West Virginia 1

Game Summary from Team website:

BLUECLAWS SCORE EARLY AND OFTEN TO BEAT POWER

The Lakewood BlueClaws scored all nine of their runs in the first three innings of Tuesday night?s game at Appalachian Power Park as they defeated the Power 9-1 in the second game of the series.

Lakewood plated five of their nine runs in the first inning. Jay Miller was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and brought in the first run of the inning before Gus Milner smacked a bases loaded double to drive in three. Julian Williams knocked in the final run of the inning with a single. Lakewood added three more runs in the second inning. Gus Milner capped off his five RBI night with a two run single and C.J. Henry drove in the final run in the second with a double. Julian Williams scored Lakewood?s final run on a wild pitch in the third.

The Power came up with their only run on Chuckie Caufield?s RBI triple in the bottom of the sixth inning. Despite the loss, the Power received great performances from Patrick Ryan and Dustin Lidyard on the back end of the bullpen. The two right-handers combined to pitch six scoreless innings of three hit ball in relief. Jimmy Mojica and Anderson Delarosa both had two hits for the Power.

Kyle Drabek (1-0) earned the victory and Roque Mercedes (0-1) took the loss. The Power fell to 2-3 with the loss and the BlueClaws improved to 3-2 with the win.

The Power will continue the four game series against the Lakewood BlueClaws at Appalachian Power Park on Wednesday night. Lakewood will start right hander Carlos Monasterios (0-1, 94.50) and the Power will counter with left hander Brae Wright (0-0, 2.08) . The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.

Box Score:

Jimmy Mojica continues to play very well. Don't forget that Roque Mercedes has a ton of talent, so the Brewers will continue to give him the ball. Great stuff from the pen...

Final: Nashville 5, Oklahoma (Rangers) 4

Game Summary: from Nashville Website:

Braun, Rivera Homer To Lead Sounds To 5-4 Win

Date Posted: 4/10/2007

NASHVILLE ? Ryan Braun and Mike Rivera delivered first-inning home runs and Zach Jackson turned in a solid start to lead the Nashville Sounds to a 5-4 victory over the Oklahoma RedHawks on Tuesday evening at Greer Stadium.

With the win, Nashville (2-4) snapped a three-game skid and registered season highs for hits and runs scored.

Jackson (1-1) earned his first win of the year after allowing two runs (one unearned) over five-plus innings of work. He struck out six batters while walking one.

For the second straight night, the RedHawks scored in the top of the first inning against Nashville. Ramon Vazquez reached on a one-out single and came around to score the game?s first run when Victor Diaz followed with an RBI double to the wall in left-center.

The Sounds responded quickly, putting up a four-spot against Oklahoma starter John Koronka in the bottom of the frame to grab a 4-1 advantage.

Braun (2-for-4) put Nashville on top when he slammed his first career Triple-A homer, a two-run shot that careened off the guitar-shaped scoreboard in left-center. The one-out blast scored Jose Macias.

Rivera continued the big inning two batters later when he belted his first homer of the year, an opposite-field two-run shot to right that also scored Joe Dillon (single).

The Sounds tacked on another run against Koronka in the fifth when Dillon scored on a Vinny Rottino double-play groundout.

Oklahoma made it a 5-2 contest when it scored an unearned run against Jackson in the sixth, stemming from a catcher?s interference call against JD Closser.

The RedHawks pulled within a run against reliever Alec Zumwalt in the seventh when Diaz, who finished 4-for-4 and was a home run short of the cycle, drilled a two-run triple to right that rolled to the wall after skipping under the glove of a diving Rottino.

The visitors continued to apply the pressure to the Sounds bullpen in the late innings.

Sounds reliever Jose Capellan worked into and out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the eighth inning, escaping unscathed after inducing an inning-ending flyout from Freddy Guzman.

Mitch Stetter fanned the first Oklahoma batter in the ninth before giving way to Dennis Sarfate, who, like Capellan, worked into and out of a bases-loaded jam before retiring Guillermo Quiroz on a game-ending flyout to left to earn his first save of the year.

Koronka (0-1) continued his career struggles against the Sounds, taking the loss after allowing five runs on seven hits over five frames. In five career starts against Nashville, the southpaw is 0-5 with an 8.77 ERA.

Macias and Closser each picked up their first hit of the season in the contest for the Sounds. All five of Braun?s hits this season have gone for extra bases (four doubles, one home run).

The Sounds and RedHawks continue the series with a noon matinee on Wednesday afternoon at Greer. Right-hander Tim Dillard (0-0, 2.84) will man the bump for Nashville to face Oklahoma right-hander Doug Mathis (0-1, 7.20).

Box Score:

Nashville with a giant first inning. Big night for Ryan Bruan, with his first AAA bomb. Sarfate and Cappellan strong but wild---Sarfate with his first save of the year.

Braun?s guitar shot propels Sounds to win

By Nate Rau, Nashville City Paper Sports Correspondent

If Ryan Braun?s promising baseball career inexplicably derails, he now has the necessary tools to switch paths and become a lead guitarist.

Braun thumped a two-run homer off the giant blue guitar scoreboard in left-center during a four-run first inning to help Nashville to a 5-4 victory over Oklahoma at Greer Stadium on Tuesday. The Sounds had scored just four runs in their previous three games prior to that.

?It?s nice, I?m glad it came in a victory. It was nice to finally score some runs today,? Braun said.

Two batters later, first baseman Mike Rivera hit another two-run homer. Braun?s home run, his first at the Triple A level, earns him a guitar. Every Sounds player who hits a home run off the scoreboard receives an acoustic guitar by Copley.

?I was excited to find out about that,? Braun said of the guitar give-away tradition. ?[i don?t play], but I?ll learn how.?

Braun added a double in the seventh. All five of Braun?s hits this season have been for extra bases.

?I?m hoping to mix in some singles every now and then,? Braun joked.

While the Sounds? offense finally made some noise thanks to Rivera and Braun, Nashville starter Zach Jackson kept Oklahoma?s offense silent. Jackson only allowed one run over five innings, before struggling in the sixth.

That?s when Jackson loaded the bases with no outs and yielded to reliever Alec Zumwalt. After forcing a double play, Zumwalt struck out Guillermo Quiroz to end the threat.

RedHawks starter John Koronka was good for what ailed the Sounds offense, which scored a season-best five runs. Following another loss on Tuesday, Koronka dropped to 0-5 lifetime against Nashville with an 8.77 ERA.

The Sounds (2-4) added an insurance run in the fifth, which proved essential. The RedHawks got within one on a two-run triple by Victor Diaz.

Down a run in the night, Oklahoma (2-4) loaded the bases off Sounds starter Dennis Sarfate, who tightened the screws after that and earned the save.

Sweet music: Braun will likely receive his guitar prior to Thursday?s game against Oklahoma. He won?t be the only Sound honored. Sounds pitching coach Stan Kyles will also be awarded a guitar for his efforts in leading the staff to a Pacific Coast League-leading 3.62 ERA.

Sounds find offense for win No. 2

Two HR, nine hits highlight night

By MIKE ORGAN

Tennessean Staff Writer

Nashville's bats meant bad news for the RedHawks.

The Sounds' offense finally came to life Tuesday night in a 5-4 win over Oklahoma.

On its best performance at the plate this year, Nashville collected nine hits, including four in the first inning.

The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Sounds and came before a Greer Stadium crowd of 2,776.

The Sounds (2-4) and RedHawks (2-4) play again at noon today.

The five runs, nine hits and two home runs were the most for Nashville in a single game this season.

Through the first five games, the Sounds' batting average (.142) was the lowest in the Pacific Coast League. Before Tuesday, Nashville had three hits or fewer in three of the first five games.

Oklahoma missed an opportunity to tie or take the lead in the eighth when it loaded the bases with Freddy Guzman at the plate. Guzman, however, flied to right field.

The RedHawks loaded the bases again in the ninth with only one out. But Dennis Sarfate struck out Nate Gold, and Guillermo Quiroz popped out to right field to end the game.

"That's the way we like to win them, thrilling to the end,'' Sounds Manager Frank Kremblas said.

"Guys made pitches when they needed to at the end of both of those innings."

Nashville jumped to a 4-1 lead in the first when Ryan Braun and Mike Rivera each hit two-run homers.

Braun said the warmer weather might have aided Nashville at the plate.

"The weather warmed up so hopefully our bats are starting to warm up with it,'' Braun said.

"The cold weather definitely doesn't help. It's one of those things where both teams have to deal with, so it's not at all an excuse. But it definitely helps when the weather warms up."

Younger Drabek gets dad's advice

Jacob Messer

Charleston Daily Mail sportswriter

Philadelphia Phillies pitching prospect Kyle Drabek always has had -- and always will have -- an unfair advantage over teammates and opponents.

Whenever he needs advice, he can consult his famous father: Doug Drabek, a former Major League baseball star and Cy Young Award winner.

"It has helped a lot," said Drabek, a 6-foot, 185-pound right-hander who is in his first season in the Class A South Atlantic League. "Ever since I was young, he has been working with me on pitching.

"Coming up to these stages, he has been helping me out a lot. I call him and tell him what I did, and he'll listen on the radio, then he'll tell me what to work on. He tells me what I'm doing good and what I'm doing bad. It has been great. It's like having a personal pitching coach."

The younger Drabek allowed one run on five hits in six innings with four strikeouts and two walks Tuesday night in the Lakewood (N.J.) BlueClaws' 9-1 win over the West Virginia Power.

"He has a real good fastball and a real good curveball," Power first baseman Andrew LeFave said of Drabek, who combined those pitches with a slider and a changeup to induce six flyouts and seven groundouts.

"He was pretty tough to hit," Power shortstop Brent Brewer added.

The BlueClaws (3-2) gave Drabek (1-0) more than enough run support to defeat the Power (2-3) with five runs in the first inning, three in the second and one in the third.

That offensive explosion determined the outcome well before any of the 2,129 fans had time to scarf down their second hot dog or gulp down their second cold beer on Two for Tuesday at Appalachian Power Park.

"My arm felt good coming into the game," said Drabek, whose fastball consistently registered between 94 and 97 mph on the radar gun during his 81-pitch performance.

According to Baseball America, the 19-year-old Drabek is the second-ranked overall prospect in the Phillies' system, behind fellow right-handed pitcher Carlos Carrasco.

The publication states that Drabek dropped in the 2006 MLB Draft because of his off-the-field woes (a public intoxication charge that eventually was dropped and a single-car accident in which he hit a tree), allowing the Phillies to take him in the first round with the 18th pick.

"I don't pay attention to any of that stuff because most of it's wrong," said Drabek, who received a $1.55 million signing bonus. "It's just people talking. I don't think about it. I just think about pitching."

Splitting time at pitcher (12-0 record, 1.18 earned run average) and shortstop (.479 batting average, six homers), Drabek led The Woodlands (Texas) High School to a state title and the national championship during his senior season last year.

He struggled in his rookie season, however, compiling a 1-3 record and a 7.71 ERA in six games with the Gulf Coast League Phillies last summer.

"I knew it was going to be a big adjustment," said Drabek, who was the nation's prep player of the year last spring. "Even if I would have gone to college, it would have been a big adjustment from high school. Going from high school to the minor leagues is an even bigger adjustment.

"Coming out of high school, I wasn't pitching; I was just throwing. I wasn't worried about location and stuff like that. I just threw it and wherever it went, it went. Coming here and working on hitting my spots, it's going to take a while. It's a lot different."

In the meantime, Drabek will lean on his famous father. Doug Drabek had a 155-134 record and a 3.73 ERA in 13 seasons with the New York Yankees (1986), Pittsburgh Pirates (1987-92), Houston Astros (1993-96), Chicago White Sox (1997) and Baltimore Orioles (1998).

The highlight of his career came in 1990 when he won the Cy Young Award. The elder Drabek had a 22-6 record and a 2.76 ERA that season, when Pittsburgh lost the National League pennant to eventual World Series champion Cincinnati.

"He did great," the younger Drabek said.

"I think I can live up to it. I'm going to try my hardest to do what he did.

"I'm trying to make a name for myself. I have always been known as Doug Drabek's son. Now, I want him to be known as Kyle Drabek's dad."

The teams will continue their four-game series at 7:05 tonight (6:05 Central). The Power will start left-hander Brae Wright (0-0, 2.08). The BlueClaws will throw right-hander Carlos Monasterios (0-1, 94.50).
