Curt Schilling - latest: Close to re-signing?

My only concern with Schilling is the potential for clubhouse problems. Curt was respected in AZ, but was not well liked by teammates. Having said that, I would think he'd know this is Prince's team. Plus, maybe he could help Sheets out a lot. Curt also had numerous injuries early in his career, although his were more serious (I think at least 2-4 shoulder surgeries)

After hearing that the Brewers were on the list of teams the veteran right-hander would consider playing for next year, Melvin figured it wouldn't hurt to place a call to his agent, Ed Hayes.

That's what Haudricourt wrote.

This is from a Forbes article:

Only a few players in Major League Baseball negotiate on their own behalf, including Gary Sheffield of the Detroit Tigers and the Phillies' Jamie Moyer. "The idea agents like to promote is the athlete as an idiot who goes in and is taken advantage of by the club," says Schilling's lawyer, Ed Hayes. A lawyer or adviser can get paid by the hour rather than rake the 5% cut off the top that agents take, he says, but a player "has to be relatively confident in his ability to negotiate, and not every player is."

Shilling Schilling -- Forbes Article

So Haudricourt should have said lawyer or advisor instead of agent, and technically, the point is now clarified for all...

I never knew that about Schilling (or Sheff and Moyer) not having an agent. Only seems logical for a superstar player without an agent like Curt to come play ball in the only state that has a major sports team without an owner!

Pretty sure Ray Allen didn't have an agent when he played for the Bucks.
"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

Yea Allen didn't. He hired some lawyers to do it with him. Ray's a bright guy to begin with and signing a max NBA deal probably wasn't all that hard to say yes to.
It's really easy for an NBA player who is about to receive a max contract. There is no negotiation or looking to different cities. Because of the collective barganing agreement in the NBA, Ray's contract was already spelled out for him. So all he needed was a lawyer to read the paperwork for him.

I don't think it is wise to go that route in MLB or NFL.

It's surprising to hear Milwaukee come up in rumors this early in the running. Getting Schilling would be ultra-cool and the trade opportunities his signing would allow are exciting to think about. As a side effect, our media exposure would grow and definitely with ESPN which would further improve our free agent drawing power.

Schilling, Sheets, Suppan, Yo and Cappy as a rotation wouldn't be bad at all! Keep Carlos in the pen and trade either Bush, Vargas or Parra. There's a lot of potential there!

Why would we waste Carlos in the bullpen again? He deserves a chance to start.

I dunno, I think given the state of the bullpen you could argue that it wouldn't be a waste at all for him to hold the fort over there for one more year. Then he could take Schilling's spot.

Why couldn't Cappy, Bush or both be in the pen? CV was awesome as a starter this year and last year he deserves a shot.

I would rather have CV in the rotation than Cappy, but I'm not sure I like all five starters being righties. I know it's not really all the big of a deal, but I think it would be kind of nice to have atleast one lefty in there.

The more I think about it, the more I want Schilling. Make it happen.
