Jacob Messer of the Charleston Daily Mail does a nice job providing us with coverage on the West Virginia Power. He had the chance to talk to Hank Aaron's son Larry, who scouts the minor leagues as part of the Brewers' professional scouting staff -- in other words, he helps Doug Melvin locate those "nuggets" in trades.

Hee's the thread on the Major League Forum with Jacob's latest article:

Final, Game Two: West Virginia 3, Lakewood (Phillies) 2

Walkoff single for Chuckie Caufield -- two walk-offs in Charleston!

West Virginia Site Doubleheader Summary:

POWER TAKE TWO FROM LAKEWOOD

Jimmy Mojica and Chuckie Caufield provided the excitement with game-winning hits for the West Virginia Power as they won in their final at-bat twice on Thursday night to take both halves of the doubleheader against the Lakewood BlueClaws at Appalachian Power Park.

In game one Lakewood scored first in the second inning when Jay Miller crossed the plate on Brent Brewer?s throwing error. The Power tied the game in the third inning when Mojica crossed the plate on Andrew Lefave?s groundout, and took the lead on Caufield?s single.

Lakewood took the lead back on back-to-back RBI doubles from C.J. Henry and Bradley Key in the fourth inning. The BlueClaws extended their lead when Jay Miller scored on Andy Bouchie?s throwing error in the sixth and Miller's RBI single in the seventh.

In the bottom of the seventh the Power scored three runs to force extra innings. Michael Brantley beat out a potential double play ball, knocking in a run in the process. Kenny Holmberg knocked Brantley in with a double and Holmberg scored the tying run on Bouchie?s single. Mojica ended the game in the bottom of the eighth inning with a walk-off homerun, his second homer of the year.

In game two the Power scored first on Lefave?s RBI single in the first inning. Lakewood scored twice in the third to take the lead. Jason Donald ripped an RBI single, and then scored later in the inning on Caufield?s error in right field after a base hit from Adrian Cardenas. The Power tied the game in the fifth inning on Brent Brewer?s RBI single. In the bottom of the seventh, Caufield provided the heroics with a base hit up the middle that scored Brewer to win the game.

In game one Omar Aguilar (1-0) earned the victory and Garet Hill (0-1) took the loss. In game two Patrick Ryan (2-0) earned the victory and Ron Hill (0-1) took the loss. The Power improved to 4-3 with the @#%$ and the BlueClaws fell to 3-4 with the losses.

The Power will begin a four game series against the Delmarva Shorebirds at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, Maryland on Friday night. The Power will start left hander Zach Braddock (0-0, 0.00). The first pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM (5:35 Central).

West Virginia Game Two Box Score:

Darren Ford four singles in eight at-bats in his first night back (two stolen bases); I'll try to hold back on pointing them out for a bit, but Brent Brewer had a fielding error (error # 6 on the young season) -- hang in there, Brent; just-turned 22-year-old RHP Mike McClendon has looked fine in his two starts...

West Virginia Game Two Game Log:

Power waste a 1st and 3rd, no out opportunity in the 4th; huge caught stealing putout throw to third base for catcher Martin Maldonado in the 6th...

Inman shines in loss

Manatees split pair with Jupiter

BY JIM CAWLEY

FLORIDA TODAY

On Thursday, Will Inman gave the Milwaukee Brewers nine more reasons to be excited about the future.

The Brevard County Manatees starter and top Brewers prospect struck out nine, allowing just one unearned run in Game 2 of a doubleheader against the Jupiter Hammerheads at Space Coast Stadium. Jupiter added three more unearned runs in the top of the seventh against a generous Brevard County defense to win the game 4-0.

The Manatees won the first game 7-2. Both contests were seven innings.

"(Inman) knows how to pitch," Brevard County (3-4) manager John Tamargo said. "He's got good stuff and he's competitive -- and that's all you want out of a pitcher.

"It's just too bad Inman was the pitcher when we didn't get any runs. I would have liked to see us get a few runs, because he would have held them and we would have won."

Inman, who lowered his ERA to 0.84, was more critical of his performance, calling it "very average." And he wasn't impressed with the strikeouts, either.

"Strikeouts don't win games," Inman said. "Strikeouts happen when you go after guys, which is what I do. I challenged a lot of guys, and that's what happened."

Inman struck out six against the Daytona Cubs last Friday, allowing just one run in 5 2/3 innings. Battling Cubs starter and former Notre Dame baseball and football star Jeff Samardzija, Inman took a no decision in what amounted to a 3-2 Brevard County victory.

On Thursday, Inman did get himself into trouble at times and retired the side in order just once. But each time, he bore down and dug himself out of the hole -- usually by way of strikeout.

"I take a lot of pride in that -- getting out of jams that I create myself," Inman said.

That's something that left an impression on his manager Thursday night.

"He could have easily given in and they could have scored three, four runs, but he battled all the way through it," Tamargo said. "That's what you want to see out of a young guy who's going to get a chance to pitch in the major leagues."

Jupiter (5-2) starter Trevor Hutchinson -- brother of former NFL quarterback Chad Hutchinson -- was solid opposite Inman in Game 2, pitching four scoreless innings. He gave up just three hits, striking out six and walking none.

Nestor Corredor and Mat Gamel combined for four of the Manatees' five hits in the game. Gamel had the team's only extra-base hit -- a double.

With runners on first and second and nobody out in the 7th, the Hammerheads' Gaby Sanchez reached on an error by Gamel before first baseman Ned Yost misplayed Dante Brinkley's grounder, allowing Lorenzo Scott Jr. to score. Brad McCann hit an RBI single and Kris Harvey walked to force home Sanchez with the game's final run.

In Game 1, shortstop Alcides Escobar went 3-for-4 with two runs scored as the Manatees outhit the Hammerheads 11-3. Cole Gillespie drove in three runs and Charlie Fermaint had two hits, including a double.

Manatees designated hitter Carlos Corporan added a solo homer to right in the third inning.

Eight Manatees finished the game with at least one hit.

Brevard County starter Rafael Lluberes went three innings, allowing a run on two hits. David Johnson (1-0) pitched two innings of relief and earned the win. He allowed just a homer by Brad McCann, striking out three and walking one.

Vince Perkins picked up the save, despite walking four in two innings of relief.

The Manatees host the St. Lucie Mets tonight at 7:00 (6:00 Central) at Space Coast Stadium. It's a special Friday the 13th promotion and fans are encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes.

Brevard County Game Two Box Score:

You know Cole Gillespie and Ryan Crew will hit, despite their slow starts...

Another classic Inman quote. I love his style.
