POWER AND SHOREBIRDS CANCELLED

 

Monday's double header between the West Virginia Power and Delmarva Shorebirds has been cancelled due to unplayable field conditions at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. The games will not be made up because the two teams do not meet again in Delmarva this season, and they do not meet again in the first half.

 

The West Virginia Power are off on Tuesday, but will begin a three game series at home against the Greensboro Grasshoppers on Wednesday night. LHP Brae Wright (0-0, 2.89) will get the start for the Power. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central).

Zephyrs Avoid Sweep, Hand Sounds 10-2 Loss

 

METAIRIE, La. ? After being on the receiving end of a double-digit scoring output the previous two nights, the New Orleans Zephyrs exacted a little revenge on Nashville on Monday evening at Zephyr Field, handing the Sounds a 10-2 loss in the finale of a four-game series.

 

The loss, the Sounds? worst margin of defeat of the young season, snapped a five-game winning streak for Nashville (6-5) and allowed the Z?s to avoid a series sweep.

 

New Orleans right-hander Phillip Humber (2-1) picked up his second victory in two starts against the Sounds this season after holding Nashville to one run on five hits over six innings.

 

Nashville starter R.A. Dickey (0-2) gave up 10 runs on 11 hits, including three home runs, over five innings of work in his second consecutive losing start. The right-hander?s ERA rose to 11.70 on the year.

 

Every Zephyrs starting position player had recorded a hit and scored a run by the end of the fifth inning. Outfielder Carlos Gomez, who extended his hitting streak to 12 games, and veteran catcher Mike DiFelice paced New Orleans with three hits apiece.

 

Nashville grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third the old-fashioned way. Chris Barnwell opened the frame with a walk, stole second, was sacrificed to third by Dickey, and scored on a Jose Macias RBI groundout.

 

New Orleans quickly responded in the bottom of the frame, exploding for six runs against Dickey. Fernando Tatis and DiFelice opened the inning with consecutive doubles to tie the score. Ruben Gotay blasted the home club into the lead with a two-out, two-run homer to right-center that made it a 3-1 game. The two-out rally continued later in the frame when Andy Tracy pulled into a tie for the PCL home run lead with his fifth roundtripper of the year, a three-run shot to center that increased the Z?s lead to five.

 

The Zephyrs added their third two-out longball of the night in the fourth when Anderson Hernandez touched Dickey for a two-run blast to right that extended the lead to 8-1. It was the infielder?s first homer of the season.

 

The home team concluded its scoring in the fifth when DiFelice ripped a two-run double to center against Dickey.

 

Macias drove in his second run of the evening for Nashville in the top of the seventh against Z?s reliever Steve Schmoll, plating Mike Rivera (2-for-3) with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to bring the score to its final 10-2.

 

Schmoll allowed one run over the final three innings of action to pick up his first save for New Orleans.

 

Steve Bray, Chris Spurling, and Dennis Sarfate each worked a scoreless inning from the hill for the Sounds following Dickey?s departure.

 

Third baseman Ryan Braun went 1-for-4 on the evening to extend Nashville?s longest hit streak of the young season to six games.

 

The Sounds continue their first road trip of the season tomorrow in Oklahoma City, where they?ll meet the RedHawks in the 7:05 p.m. opener of a four-game series.

 

Right-hander Tim Dillard (0-0, 2.38) makes his third start of the year for Nashville in search of his first career Triple-A victory. Oklahoma will counter with right-hander Mike Wood (0-0, 0.00).

gotta figure the Crew would love to promote Balfour to AAA soon. He's really dealing. I could see a swap soon where Villanueva for Capellan, with Dickey getting released and Balfour to the AAA pen. Then again, I could also see Balfour just to the big league roster.

Suns Eclipse Stars With Late Power Surge

 

John Lindsey and Marshall McDougal hit back-to-back home runs in the 14th inning to power Jacksonville to a 5-3 win over Huntsville Monday night at a chilly Joe Davis Stadium in the opener of a five-game set. The Suns improved to 6-5 on the season and beat the Stars for a 12th consecutive meeting dating back to June 28, 2005 in Huntsville. The Stars dropped their second straight at home and overall and fell to 4-5 but remain in a tie for first place in the Southern League North with Chattanooga and Tennessee.

 

Corey Thurman, the seventh Stars? pitcher of the night, retired the visitors in turn in the 13th inning but saw Lindsey lead off the decisive inning by cranking a 1-0 pitch over the wall in left field for his second long ball of the night and the first run for either side since the fourth inning. McDougal followed by hitting an opposite field home run to right field on a 2-1 pitch, his first of the year. Thurman yielded only eight round trippers in 140 innings with the Stars last season and did not give up more than one in any of his 24 starts. Huntsville had allowed only one home run in the first eight games of the season prior to tonight.

 

Jon Meloan retired the Stars in order in the bottom of the 14th to nail down his first save of the season and complete an 11-inning scoreless performance by the Jacksonville bullpen. Carlos Alvarez got the win with two shutout frames and kept the game going by getting Brendan Katin to ground into an inning-ending double play in the 13th with the bases loaded.

 

Lindsey belted a two-run home run off of Sam Narron in the first to give the Suns the early lead and mark the fifth straight home game in which the Stars have been scored on in the first inning. Trailing 3-1, Huntsville got the game tied in the fourth on a bases loaded sacrifice fly by Steve Sollmann and a fielder?s choice grounder by Hernan Iribarren.

 

Narron allowed three runs on six hits over six innings in the longest outing by a Stars? starter this season. Scott Elbert, the third-rated prospect in the Dodgers? organization according to Baseball America, was taken out with the bases loaded and nobody out in the fourth. He was charged with three runs on two hits and seven walks in his shortest start in 14 double-A appearances. Five Suns? pitchers combined to issue 15 walks but the Stars stranded 16 base runners.

 

The series continues Tuesday night with Huntsville sending left-hander Manny Parra to the hill against Suns? right-hander William Juarez. Gillespie powers Manatees to win

 

Cole Gillespie belted a pair of two-run homers to lift visiting Brevard County over Jupiter, 5-3, on Monday.

 

Gillespie, who went without an extra-base hit in his first 32 at-bats, forged a 3-3 tie with his first homer of the season during a three-run sixth inning. His second two-run blast in the eighth put the Manatees (5-5) ahead to stay.

 

Kevin Roberts (1-0) picked up the win with two innings of one-hit relief. Luis Pena struck out two in the ninth for his second save.

 

Mauro Zarate (0-1) took the loss after yielding two runs on five hits over two innings. Hammerheads starter Christopher Volstad gave up three runs on six hits and a walk with six strikeouts in six frames.

Pair of Jacksonville homers in 14th inning turn back Huntsville

When John Lindsey and Marshall McDougall slammed no-doubt-it homers in the 14th, the Jacksonville Suns officially ended the four-hour-plus marathon. Except, well, a marathon is more about running than walking.

 

But scratch the surface only a little and it was a clear case of Huntsville's missed opportunities that cost the Stars this 5-3 decision.

 

Despite collecting 15 walks off Suns pitching - including a league-record five walks by Steve Sollman - the Stars left 16 on base. The 3-4-5 batters in the order were a combined 1-for-20, with seven strikeouts.

 

The most painful missed opportunity for Huntsville was a sharply hit grounder in the bottom of the 13th by Brendan Katin, with the bases loaded, that the Suns converted into a double play.

 

That was followed immediately by Lindsey's homer off reliever Corey Thurman, the Stars' seventh pitcher, a bit of symmetry considering Lindsey had a first-inning homer almost four hours earlier.

 

Even though the Stars went five-plus innings without a hit, from a Max St. Pierre single in the fifth to Sollman's leadoff single in the 13th, they had several chances.

 

They loaded the bases on walks in the second with one out, but Hernan Iribarren flew out and Steve Moss whiffed. They loaded the bases on two walks and an error in the eighth before Katin struck out and had two aboard in the tenth before Iribarren lined hard into a double play. Then came Katin's double play in the 13th.

 

It was a night of numerical oddities:

 

Sollman came to the plate seven times, but never collected an at-bat in his first six trips (five walks and a sacrifice fly).

 

The "crowd" was announced at 888, the fourth consecutive game of triple-digit attendance.

 

The Stars had 14 strikeouts, the Suns 15.

 

The Stars had only three hits in the first 13 innings.

 

Of the first 34 Huntsville trips to the plate, 21 times the Stars didn't put the ball in play in fair territory (10 walks, nine strikeouts, two pop fouls). For the game, there were 64 trips to the plate and 31 times they failed to put in play.

 

And, once again, the Stars managed to play an entire game without a home run. Nine games now, and Huntsville's only Homer is its skunk mascot.

 

The Stars and Suns go at it again tonight at 7:05, with Manny Parra (1-0, 1.80) pitching for Huntsville against William Juarez (2-0, 0.00 ERA). Wednesday's game will be at 10:35 a.m.

 

Lindsey hammered a two-out, two-run homer off Huntsville's Sam Narron in the first to give the Suns a quick lead, but an RBI single by Ulyses Davenport on a two-out, 3-2 pitch cut it to 2-1 in the bottom half.

 

Luke Allen led off the second with a double and scored on an infield chopper to make it 3-1 when shortstop Guilder Rodriguez couldn't pick the ball cleanly from his glove and wasn't able to throw home for a sure out at the plate. It turned out to be a huge run, though G-Rod made a terrific play in the 10th, going far behind second base to snare a Chin Lung Hu bouncer, making a 360-degree turn to throw Hu out.

 

Jacksonville starter Scott Elbert, who had walked only three men in 11 innings of previous work, struggled to find the strike zone and in the fourth sandwiched walks to St. Pierre and Narron around a Rodriguez single. Elbert was yanked, with seven walks and six strikeouts.

 

Suns reliever B.J. LaMura entered and gave up a sacrifice fly to Sollman and an RBI grounder by Iribarren to tie the game.
