yankee free agents

With Torre being gone now, it seems that the Yankees may lose a few free agents.

Posada, Pettitte, ARod, Rivera, and Clemens

Posada- Great fit here, and a few other places. I say he stays in NY. That would be the hardest hole to fill.

Pettitte- He may go wherever Torre goes. I have a feeling they both end up in St. Louis. Just a gut feeling.

ARod- Anywhere but NY is a great fit. I think Anaheim gets him. Much more laid back there.

Rivera- Yanks may want to put Chamberlain in the rotation if they lose Pettitte. Makes Rivera a priority. Stays with Yanks.

Clemens- Finally showed his age. Will retire.

Predictions are welcome.

Posada - I'd love to see him in Milwaukee, but I wonder just how much money he'll get on the open market. New York will probably come with the best offer. Prediction - Yankees

Pettitte - I like your speculation. I think Pettitte is a good fit for St. Louis even without Torre. Prediction - St. Louis

Rodriguez - We all know he'll opt out, and if Steinbrenner isn't bluffing on his "we won't be bidding for him" talk, then he's an idiot. Rodriguez has got to be tired of the crap he gets there, so if anyone comes with a comparable offer, I think he'll take it. I don't really want to see him in Chicago or Boston, so I hope he ends up back on the West Coast. Prediction - Anaheim

Rivera - I just can't picture him anywhere else. He's peeved that he doesn't have an extention yet, but I think the Yanks will still offer him the best deal and he'll take it. Prediction - Yankees

Clemens - We agree here as well, he's gotta get off the HGH. Prediction - Retirement

Final prediction - The Yankees end their consecutive playoff streak next season, and the media totally blasts Steinbrenner for letting Alex Rodriguez and Joe Torre go. Ironic, because they really are the ones who ran Rodriguez out of town, and the new manager won't be the reason they missed the playoffs.

I think that the Yanks are going to make a HUGE push to upgrade their rotation. With the possibility of Pettitte being on his way out they will be even more in need. It has been discussed elsewhere but I have a feeling that Abreu may be a trading chip for this offseason.

Prediction with Brewers goggles:

Bush + to the Yanks

Abreu plus cash to the Crew

Abreu's an unrestricted FA unless the Yanks renegotiate before the '15 days after the WS' rule.

Posada is going to get big $$, and more years than you'd ever want to sign a catcher entering his age 37 season, but he clearly had a stellar 2007.

A-Rod - I think - will be retained. Sbryl, the only 'we won't renegotiate if he opts out' I'd heard was from Ca$hman, not Steinbrenner. 2008 for NYY is looking mighty scary at this point, imho. Quite a few question marks, and more than one scenario where they're practically in rebuilding mode. Just watch the dollars fly this offseason! Irony being cruel, Carl Pavano still is under contract for one more year.

yeah i saw the same segment on espn, (site your sources, no offense), i believe most was true to the point of andy pettitte, i think he will be the one to stay as well as jorge. rivera will be gone no doubt, and clemens should retire without a doubt.

No offense taken. I turn ESPN off when they start babbling about the Yankees. Although I do think they need to talk about the Yankees, now would not be the time.

Steinbrenner has this thing about trying to overshadow the Red Sox whenever they make it farther in the playoffs. Pretty childish to me.

I just drool at the idea of signing Posada to a deal.

Posada... too expensive + too old = bad idea

EDIT: Apologies to ya, Hammer, as I neglected to remember that Abreu has a $16 mil. team option. However, if the Yanks do pick that up, they'd have to eat much of that number to facilitate a trade to Milwaukee. Fwiw, the buyout on the option year (2008) is $2 mil. I think the fates of A-Rod, Posada, Rivera, etc. will play a large role in whether or not the option is exercised. Yes, I'm aware that exercising an option will likely take place before any potential FA transactions, but the 'home team' generally has a solid idea of whether or not they can retain potential outgoing FAs.

No offense taken TLB...that's why I mentioned that there would be money coming to MKE in the deal. Abreu has been my man crush since the All Star game in Detroit...what a power display!! The funny part is my wife (not a baseball fanatic, just a normal fan) still asks about him by name when trades and free agency start to happen. She wants him on the Crew as well http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

According to the NY Daily News, the Yankees are getting ready to offer Jorge Posada 3 years, $40 million: http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/yankees/2007/10/23/2007-10-23_yankees_likely_to_offer_jorge_posada_40_-2.html

If that's not crazy enough, it looks like Posada thinks he can get even more on the open market. It should be noted that the Yanks' offer of 3/$40 would make him the highest paid catcher in Major League Baseball. And Posada would want even more. Yikes...scratch him off the list.

I saw some posts around here mentioning how nice he'd be to have as opposed to Estrada, but that was mostly wishful thinking. I just can't believe that someone would be willing to give Posada that much money, especially since he's destined to be a DH after another year or two.

I don't think any Yankee unrestricted FAs are potential Brewers realistically. I do dig the Bobby Abreu idea quite a lot.

Yankees get

Bush + Jenkins or Mench + someone at least mildly enticing (+ maybe Turnbow?)

Brewers get

Abreu + cash

Maybe not the most likely, but VERY appealing.

The Yankees would jump at getting a 200IP+ pitcher for an older, over paid outfielder.

Bush for Abreu +8 million? Yes

Estrada + Bush for Abreu + 5million? Yes

Bush for Melky Cabrera? Yes

Bush, Gwynn, and Turnbow for Matsui and Bruney? Yes

Suppan for Abreu? Yes

Any number of deals could work.

To get back to the original thread, Posada may get 3yr/42 mil offered from the Yankees. I really think that's out of our reach.

That's an awful trade for us. Why would you give up so much for what you call "an older, overpaid outfielder"? Will that $5 mil. magically help us create a C out of the clear blue sky?
