Untouchables

jhpc12

I don't know where this belongs, but who does everyone consider untouchable.

Are there even anybody that fits that category.

Prince, Weeks, JJ, Braun, Billy, Corey, or Yo. This is the nucleus of our future. Do we trade away one or two for a one or two year run? Do we hold on to these guys for as long as we can and add the missing pieces?

I really believe that these are 7 studs in the making. I truly believe that a couple more years together barring injury and the Brewers might have a juggernaut.

How do you part with anyone of them? Is one of them less important than another? If so which one do you dangle to try and get better?

If you mean "dangle off Miller Park roof" that's got to be Ned Yost. I would dangle him off the roof until he promised to get better.

I am not a big fan of the "untouchable" concept -- I am more opposed to trading players when their value is low. Assuming Melvin doesn't do anything idiotic, I would rather see Prince traded than Bill Hall, because we would get top dollar for Prince, as for Hall, probably not so much.

There are no untouchables. If Minnesota came and offered Santana (re-signed for 5 years at $15 million), Mauer and Morneau for Prince you take it.

However since most of these guys are still really cheap they won't be traded. Hart, Gallardo, Prince, Weeks, Hardy, Braun are all pretty much untouchable unless an offer like I just posted comes along (highly unlikely.)

Melvin has not shown any inclination to deal any part of the young core.

But with so many of these guys so close together on the Arby/FA schedule, it might make sense to at least consider dealing one now when their value in the trade market is very, very high and get back one solid veteran and one top level prospect who has yet to accumulate major league time. I don't think that would happen but when and if offers come in for any of those guys, it's something to consider.

There will be a time when one of Prince, Hart, Hardy, Braun, Weeks, and Yo needs to be traded in order to give the Brewers the best chance to resign as many of the rest as possible. That decision has to be made by determining the best timing/situation for which young "core" player gets dealt in a trade that maximizes their value and adds valuable players to the Brewers' roster.

For a small market team, unfortunately there are never any untouchables - I'm sure Melvin and Co. would need to be overwhelmed to trade one of their core players, but it's an option that has to remain open...you never know when a GM will pull a Sabean and trade players the caliber of Nathan, Liriano, and Bonser to you for a one year rental of a decent everyday player (Piersynski, in that case)

The only REAL Untouchable on the team would have to be the Regal Son. His plate discipline and prodigious power are Cooperstown-bound, with health. That said, if he takes the Mo Vaugh Trail, we could lose all value. But I'm optimistic about his health, given the guy is built like a granite stump.

Braun's value in trade would be incredible, and I continue to envision a package where the Brewz trade him to the Twinkies for Johan, and then sign Santana to a 7 year/$130mil contract. That said, his power/speed upside is extraordinary. He could be a better version of David Wright. Crazy! Probably a keeper, but could be had in the right trade.

Hart's value is where I tend to be a bit bias. I tend to put his value around where I put Braun's, if only because Corey plays three serviceable places on the field while Braun can't even play one. Also, Corey has shown the ability to hit in many different spots in the lineup while Braun goes impotent anywhere but #3. And there's the fact that Braun is from the U and hangs with A-Rod.... Moving on.

Weeks....higher OBP than Braun. Amazing slugging percentage from 2B. No ceiling, at least in terms of comparisons. I hold out hope, much like I do with Ben. I still think Ned should redo the lineup, LaRussa-style, and have a true bat in the 9 spot, with Rickie leading off and the Regal One in the 2-hole, ensuring that Rickie sees a good amount of fastballs. Keep Braun in his comfortable 3 spot and put Hart four, Hall in the five hole. The Grench batting sixth...a "healthy" Estrada seventh with Yo or Bush eighth and Hardy in the nine hole...

Hardy. The guy can bat anywhere, and has a ceiling of Cal Ripken Jr. Has more value to us than others because of his reliable defense from short.

Yo...Parra....CV The Younger. Again, depends on the package but all COULD be had, though Yo would have to be involved in something like "Papelbon and Beckett...." so unless Theo has a "Keith Hernandez" moment, we probably shouldn't be trading the young Chupacabra. Parra...young lefty. Perfect Game at AAA. Perfect complement to Yo...with CV serving as our #3 in 3 years, when we're trying for our third ring in as many years.

I think as of now most of those are untouchable unless an amazing offer comes along. I think Hall could be dealt this off-season (there are rumors out there) and I think Hardy could be had, but I don't see the Brewers proactively trying to trade him.
