Ways to fight fall/winter boredom

jaybird2001wi

Well, it is now officially the boring days of fall. The leaves are falling, temperatures are falling and it seems like I am starting to get my annual head cold sickness due to the temperature change.

What does everyone like to do during the fall to pass the time? I used to prefer quiet nights at home watching DVDs but now it is becoming more bored than not actually watching DVDs.

I always thought it would be cool to go on a fall hiking deal somewhere in Racine/Kenosha. Kenosha has Petrifying Springs, where I could just ask to be dropped off and just hike for a few hours and have food/water handy. I never really went hiking in all my life. What exactly does one need to be a hiker?

I figured fall is the best time to hike since you will be able to see the beautiful fall foliage and the temperatures are not as bad.

The winter time seems much more boring since snow is on the ground and pretty much everyone discourages winter driving, so people are basically left to be themselves inside.

I have also wondered if it is possible for me to become a volunteer at the local public library and read to schoolchildren or at a senior citizen home and be a bingo caller. Anyone know of any places to do this?

I might ask the local bar if they got any roster spots open for future bowling leagues so I can bowl a couple nights a week for competition.

There are a ton of volunteer opportunities out there. Just look on craigslist or volunteermatch, or contact local hospitals, orgs, churches, etc. Also, I was under the impression that with community sport leagues, you could become a free agent to join a team. You could always take a class, for example sign language or ceramics. (I've wanted to take those classes.) I don't hike, but like to take nature walks. One of my favorite places in WI was Lapham Peak. Maybe someone can recommend a hiking guide or forum to check out before your first time out.
