What's new, Elijah Dukes? (accused of slapping pregnant exâ?¦reply #69)

One one had I hope that he would go to a veteran team like the Yankees and not the young DRays to finally have some adult-role-model types around him who will give him the disclipine that he needs and he'll finally start to act straight. We've got Chris Carter as an example who turned his life around.

One the other hand, I think of the old turtle/scorpion story "but I'm a scorpion. that's what I do" and wonder if that's just the way he's always going to be.

the way these at-risk high schoolers are plucked up, immediately given huge contracts, made into a big name and turned loose on a city, I'm really surprised this sort of thing doesn't happen more often. or maybe it does and we just don't read about it.

he's not all that unique when it comes to stupid

I love that line. I really don't know much about him or is his family background? Sometimes when guys come from hard backgrounds the transition to acceptable behavior is not smooth.

I lived in a home that had plenty of troubled kids. The thing we learned is sometimes bad behavior is inevitable. If they can be one step better than from what they came they are making monumental strides. Bad backgrounds don't go away in a few years. Many time it takes a few generations.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

Elijah Dukes Sr. received a 20-year prison sentence for shooting a man who sold his wife $100 worth of fake crack cocaine

He's a man! He's 40! What would you do in a situation like that? Eat the $100? No way! Vengeance is the only solution to that problem.

Hey, it's not like they told him up front it was fake crack.

I wouldn't expect perfect behavior from him if that's the case. People can judge him all they want but someone who comes from that and is one step better than whence he came deserves kinder treatment. Perhaps sympathy instead of scorn. That doesn't mean acceptance of the behavior mind you. Simply understanding everything just doesn't change overnight. We can only hope his one step better leads to one step more from his kids. It is a viscous cycle he was caught in. Maybe he's the first step out of that cycle. Time will tell. If he is then he deserves better than scorn and ridicule.

Elijah Dukes lost it again during a winter league game and went after an umpire. He had to be physically restrained from attacking the guy. Heres what the opposing team thought of it...

"It got a little ugly,'' said Jesus Campos, VP of the host Gigantes team. "If it wasn't for (teammate) Andy Tracy holding him back, things could have gotten a lot worse. ... It definitely wasn't a safe situation for the umpire because (Dukes) is a big guy.''

It is really a shame that guys like this with all the talent in the world cannot hold it together.

Watch the video they have, unless the scene got seriously worse after the small clip there is really no reason to even mention this. Dukes is definitley a head case but there are incidents that happen in the majors worse than that every season. Prince's ejection this year comes to mind.

I think once a guy has a rep anything he does gets noticed.
"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

Dukes out of baseball in 3....2.....

i don't think i would have said it 8 years ago, but i think professional sports is becoming more aware of the long-term detriment a headcase can have on a team (innocuous as this incident may or may not have been).

that's really sad. guy is given a supernatural talent that 0.1% of people have and he absolutely wastes it by being selfish. for every Elijah Duke in the world, i'm glad we at least have the example of Josh Hamilton who was able to come back from all that and turn out to be a really decent person.

I think the best part of the article is that his lawyer is no longer representing him. This guy is a cash cow for any lawyer. If I was a lawyer I would be knocking down his door. Even give him a discount like "buy nine and the tenth domestic battery is free." You'd still make out great in the long run.

I can just see Lionel Hutz peddling that discount on The Simpsons.

I was picturing that too F-town. Plus, he's already responsible for supporting tons of other kids, he mine as well put the lawyers kids through college too. I would say it's terrible to make fun of a situation like this, but what the heck.

My sister-in-law taught at the Tampa HS Dukes attended while he was a student there. Sadly, per her accounts from back then, none of his screw-ups over the years since is terribly surprising (which is a really bad thing to be able to say). Too bad for him and also for all those affected by his unfortunate choices & actions.
