I need some new music to listen to; any suggestions?

Cracked Bat Collector
I'm sure you've all been in the spot I'm in right now, I've listened to all my music so much and am sick of it all and need some new stuff to listen to. I mainly like rock and alternative with bands such as Nickelback, 3 Days Grace, Default, Breaking Benjamin being my favorites with some country too. If anyone has any bands or cds they'd suggest I'd appreciate it. I was looking forward to the new Nickelback cd slated to come out late 07/early 08 but now they said they're going to take a break for a while so no new music from them for me. Thanks guys!

Are you looking to go a totally new direction?

Try this site - Pandora.com

Its online "radio". You create your own station by entering one or more band names or song titles, and the site then starts playing similar music by other bands, often less known ones. You can select whether you like the song or not, and the engine will narrow or expand its search for other songs. Its pretty cool, and you'll end up finding some new bands you like or end up with a radio playlist of songs you never knew you liked. Or you can easily just create your perfect radio station.

And, btw, how can you possibly like Nickelback? - rhetorical question

Some else said it first. Yes! Nickelback is the second worst band on the planet, besides Muse. But Muse is far worse.

Pandora is pretty cool. I prefer Last.fm, which is more personable than Pandora, though more time consuming and labor intensive.

Just going to throw some current names out there... Pela, Black Mountain, Drive-By Truckers, Liars, Sleater-Kinney (RIP), Wolfmother, The Black Angels. Maybe Serena Maneesh or Band of Horses?

Live had a bunch of good album, ending with Secret Samahdi. And also obviously any old Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, or similar band is a must. I guess I don't even really know what "alternative" means anymore. Last I was paying attention to that sort of genre title, it was Dave Matthews Band and Cake, but I take it that's changed.

Wish I could help you, but I'm too old.

I still think of groups like R.E.M., Talking Heads, Violent Femmes, etc. as being alternative/college music. My wife likes Nickleback. I don't get it either. I heard a couple of their songs, didn't really do it for me.

For shame, Toby. For Shame. How can you NOT like Muse? Saying Nickelback > Muse is like saying that Carlos Zambrano is the most popular player on BF.Net - it's just not truehttp://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/wink.gif

And... LIVE? They had a bunch of albums that were ok... "good" is pushing it. Muse > Live.

The first time I got subjected to hearing Daughtry's new single on the radio, I thought it was another pathetic Nickelback song. I didn't know that they were now licensing out their style of whiney, watered-down, toothless banging of instruments and wailing (I can't even call them "music" - and believe me, I tried) to other people. I'm guessing American Idol bought the rights to that trash for future inclusion on the show. Needless to say, once I managed to stop throwing up in my mouth, I changed the channel.

i think i am in your boat CBC (no nickelback or country though), of late i have been listening to some indie rock and like it (namely Arctic Monkeys, Spoon, Regina Spektor, Silvensun Pickups, Of Montreal, Postal Service. It's hard in this city though to learn new bands of this ilk since only one station plays anything that resembles indie rock. That pandora station is very cool. I just tried it today. What a cool way to find new bands.

The National - "Boxer"

I recommend them anytime someone asks me for a suggestion of something to listen to. You know, you can also just download the new Radiohead, too.

Spoon is a decent pick, too. Their new album is pretty solid. Sleater-Kinney = amazing. I love Drive-By Truckers, as well.

And does it have to be new stuff? You could always listen to some Replacements, or something. My favorite album being "Tim", but "Let it Be" and "Pleased to Meet Me" are also great albums. They sound basically timeless, anyhow.

Otherwise, I don't know a lot in the way of the Nickelbacks of the world. It's just weird how oxymoronic the term "alternative" is. If Nickelback, etc. was an alternative act, then why do their records go number one? I guess I would consider alternative to be stuff that you're not hearing three times an hour on your local Clear Channel-owned station.

Oh, and I also recommend Bon Iver to everyone. It sounds more like Nick Drake than Nickelback, though.

If you like alternative story telling folk try Todd Snider (Live)

If you want the most emotional intelligent alt country story telling try Lucinda Williams (Carwheels on a gravel road) Think of Sheryl Crow with clever story telling and a bit of a twang. 1999 spin magazine Album of the year and not just country. Enjoy!

Yeah, Car Wheels is definitely a great album. Lucinda has a few of them. I guess along the lines of more "alt. country", check out these bands:

Uncle Tupelo - "Anodyne" being my favorite album. They also have a greatest hits that is excellent to prime a newer fan.

Whiskeytown - "Stranger's Almanac"

The Jayhawks - "Hollywood Town Hall"

Son Volt - "Trace"

I am also a big fan of Chris Knight. He released "The Trailer Tapes" this year, and that's a great album.

I will slap you Toby. Muse is the exact opposite of the worst band on the planet. The best.

I can't fathom that even you would put them in the same category as Nickelback. Nickelback is like my feces: brown and Canadian. I think I've said enough.

I suggest Muse, of course.

As long as it doesn't involve Weezer performing live, I can dig that song. Unfortunately, Weezer live circa 2005 was about as putrid as it got. Then again... they WERE following The Pixies onstage so the bar was set pretty high. You could tell Rivers mailed in the performance and did NOT want to be there. What a pity, really.

And yes - I highly recommend The Pixies.

I can see we aren't getting very far. This can only be settled in a hotdog eating contest.

Luckily for you I just had gastric-bypass surgery so I'll only be able to eat about 15 or so.

Seconded.

I'd recommend anyone not familiar with Weezer only check out the first two discs to begin with. Starting with the others would be like trying to get into Star Wars by watching Attack of the Clones. The last three albums have a couple of really great songs and a ton of filler. They could be condensed into one really good album, so you could say Weezer has released 3 great albums.

Also, go back and give another listen to Silverchair. A lot of their stuff sounds better than it did back then, IMO. Oh yeah, and maybe check out some Nerf Herder if you're a dork like me.

Maybe I am in the minority here but I constantly have never heard of most of the bands that are reccommended on here. Maybe I am too young (22) or something.

Nope, you just have a low hipster IQ. I'm 27 and have heard of maybe 1/5 of the bands listed. I'm all like, mainstream and stuff.

I've been listening to REM's "Murmur" a lot lately. Awesome album with the kind of songs that get lodged in your head for an extended period of time.
Got the new Springsteen the other day but have only listened to it once. There's something a bit off about the production but the songs are great.
And I just checked out a bunch of CD's from the library the other day including The Stooges s/t first release, which is completely mindblowing. I've listened to it five or six times in the last day. Highly recommended.
I'm at work right now and just listened to Weezer's green album which is great. I listened to the blue album last night. You can't go wrong with either one. I think I prefer the green one. I need to get "Pinkerton" also.
Right at the moment I've got "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" by The Byrds on, which needless to say is a classic.
Been digging Traffic lately too. Love "The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys."

Also CBC, if you like country, I'd check out the Texas scene, artists like Pat Green (pre sellout), Jack Ingram (pre sellout), Jason Boland, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Robert Earl Keen, Billy Joe Shaver. Stuff that doesn't get played on country radio but is still very "accessible."

Well the thread title is "I need some new music to listen to" - so wouldn't it be a good thing that people haven't heard of these bands? Like, discovering music beyond radio, whoa!
