2007 Performances that went largely unnoticed....

OglivieHomePerm

215 Innings Pitched...202 Hits allowed...184 Strikeouts...3.85 ERA....1.107 Whip

Jamie Shields - Tampa Bay.

I came across these numbers while doing my "homework" before voting for A.L. Cy Young at BaseballProspectus.com. Am I the only one who didn't hear a peep about this guy during the season?

Who else had a nice 2007 that no one is talking about?

Jeremy Hermida:

.296/.369/.501, 18 HR in 429 AB's. If he stays healthy, his walks and HR totals will rise and he's going to be a star.

Rafael Betancourt:

79.3 IP, 80 K, 9 BB, 1.47 ERA

Jack Cust:

.256/.408/.504, 26 HR, 105 BB/164 K (He had more walks than hits. That's awesome.)

Saw these two while looking up reliever info.

Heath Bell 93.2 IP, 81 games, 2.02 ERA

Peter Moylan 90 IP, 80 games, 1.80ERA

Anytime you can get a releiver who pitches in nearly half your games and still be that productive it has to be nice. I don't know much aobut these guys maybe they are better known than I think but for the most part relievers are unnoticed unless they lead the league in saves.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

Jeremy Hermida

Talk about "under the radar"....I drafted Hermida in my 12-team fantasy league, and dropped him after 3 weeks. No one picked him up after that...myself included. Boy, he sure would have looked nice on my team, especially in the last week of the season, when he went 14 for 30.

How about the season that Curtis Granderson put together?: 38 Doubles, 23 Triples, and 23 Homers.

Joe Nathan, another awesome year. I'm pretty sure he could have 108 saves in 2008 and nobody would notice.

Good call on Jack Cust. I picked him up in my fantasy league that counts walks immediately after Oakland got him. It's about time a team gave him a real chance.

JJ Putz in Seattle had a tremendous year that nobody seems to mention.

Carlos Pena in TB.

Carlos Pena had a monster year. I didn't even realize how many home runs he had until I saw his name there when they showed the MLB leaders during a Brewer game. I immediately picked him up and he propelled my team into taking my fantasy league. Wonder if he can consistently put up those huge numbers.

James Shields had a great year....he's the master of the modified circle change. People think the gyroball is tough to hit, the MCC actually exists.

I'm shocked that none of the 3TO lovers here saw Cust coming...he broke the record (for qualifiers) for greatest 3TO season ever with 59%

Someone was big on him, brettac maybe? Maybe it was a few people. Wasn't totally shocking that he did well, but he did fly under the radar.

cust has been a fan of the 3to guys for like 6-7 years...it just took him awhile to finally get that oppurtunity in oakland that everyone knew all along was coming...

corey ahrt had the best unnoticed season all year...i was at turner field a few weeks back and mentioned to my dad (braves fan) that corey hart was having a better year than jeff francoeur..he say's "who's corey hart?" 20/20 season and half the people here probably didn't even notice...

Bj upton--- turns out he's a star after all...had nearly the exact same season as corey hart

Aaron hill had a very nice little season

I think a lot of people have expected Upton to break out for a couple of years now, but Jamie Shields and Carlos Pena were definitely the two most surprising to me. Tampa Bay has a ton of young pitching talent on the way up, and if they can just keep the talent together that they already have at the big-league level (particularly the bats) they might just have a chance of taking down the mighty Yankees and Red Sox.

Unfortunately for the D-Rays Pena's monster season is going to land him a huge pay-day this offseason thanks to a lackluster FA crop at 1B and one Mr. Scott Boras.

According to the St. Petersburg Times, he has two arbitration years left.

The Rays did get a lot - 40 homers and a run at the team record of 117 RBIs - for an $800,000 salary and $400,000 in incentives. They control Pena's rights for two more years, at arbitration-driven salaries, and could wait to see if he can maintain his level of play before making an extended commitment. But Pena, 29, has said repeatedly how much he wants to stay with them, and the Rays are believed to have already initiated discussions on a three- or four-year deal.

Thanks mc, I thought I read somewhere that Pena was a FA and was likely to be one of the bigger big money surprises this offseason, and after looking at his contract situation (he was arby eligible in both 2005 and 2006) I just figured this season factored into his last year of arby.

Good for the D-Rays.

B.J. Upton had a pretty good year offensively, but his defense is horrible. He makes Rickie Weeks look like Robby Alomar. http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/laugh.gif

Jamie Shields did have an amazing year, though, but Kazmir will always get more attention from the national media because he's the "One that Got Away" from the Mets. I had both on my fantasy team this year and had a pretty killer pitching staff (along with Verlander, Wainwright, and a half year of Sheets). Shields' K/BB rate is Sheets-like.

Joakim Soria was a nice surprise, too, out of Kansas City's bullpen. He started the year as their closer while Dotel was on the DL and took the role over again once Dotel was traded, and put up solid numbers for a rookie.

Wow, nice find. That's crazy - especially considering that 13 of his 23 came on the road. Comerica is a triples park if ever there were one. 420' to CF!

Yeah, that's why I mentioned him. I think I had him as my avatar for like 6 months and on multiple occasions. I'm really glad he got the shot that's been coming to him for a long time, and he had a great year.

He even made 9 plays out of his zone in 463 innings in the OF this year!

Just a few...

Hanley Ramirez, FLA.

Carlos Pena, TB

Oh, and the guy who's 29th in MLB in OPS.

Corey Hart.

I also didn't hear a word about John Lackey all year long, but maybe that's because I stopped watching ESPN.

Or Matt Cain, who managed to be top 20 in baseball in ERA and go 7-16 for the Giants.

Wow.
