Favorite out of Wisconsin sports teams?

jaybird2001wi

I have always wondered if any of you Brewer fan faithful have any favorite teams in other sports outside of Wisconsin?

Prior to the Brewers switch to the National League, I always had the Cubs as my National League team, but when they made the move... I chose the Brewers all the way because I was born the very same month and year the Brewers went to the World Series. I will never turn my back on the Brewers. For some odd reason, I kind of have an interest in the Mets because the year I started collecting baseball cards, in 1988 when I was six years old, I always liked Mets baseball cards for some reason.

Outside of baseball, I will always be a Notre Dame Fightin' Irish football fan. Although I have a "Wisconsin duty" to at least like the Badgers, the Irish will always be my college team. I started following College Football around 1990 when Notre Dame was just coming off a National Title two years ago with one of my favorite football coaches of All-Time, Lou Holtz.

I just love the tradition of Notre Dame, with Tim Brown and Joe Montana coming from South Bend and also the Four Horseman. Not to mention my Aunt moved to South Bend around the same time I started following the team and even demanded to drive down there when I got my drivers license just to check out the Touchdown Jesus mural. Oh, and I will always have the movie, "Rudy," in my heart. Although, I have hated what the football program has become. Just utterly frustrated. I could go on a wild tangent over why Notre Dame should have never given Holtz the freedom to leave.

For the NHL, I kind of have an interest in the Blackhawks. But they simply frustrate me ever since they decided to make a deal with the devil and send Chris Chelios to their most-hated rival (and probably one of the top historical rivalries in all of sports) the Detroit Red Wings.

My diehard Packer fan status has gone down to lukewarm after spending time as a news intern in Chicago Bears' country in Waukegan, Ill. I even had a chance to meet a few players during some of the "photo op" PR deals and they all seem like decent people. Made me realize and understand the whole Jerry Seinfeld joke, "We don't cheer for the players, we cheer for the uniform. A good guy for our favorite team gets traded to another team. Him in our team jersey, good. Him in another team, jersey... bad."

As many around here know, my NFL team is Philadelphia. I remember watching them as an 8-year old kid and decided I liked them. They've been my team ever since.

Before the Brewers went to the NL, I was a Mets fan. When the Brewers switched leagues, out went the Mets. I don't really have an AL favorite.

In college, I've always liked LSU. Growing up, my Dad had a friend from Louisiana and he'd always bring me LSU t-shirts and a football jersey. I really liked their baseball program, but now that Theriot and Fontenot are Cubs.....

The 49ers were always favorite non Packer team as well in the NFC... in the AFC I've always been attached to the Bills... and it just occurred to me that I must love futility in the Brewers and Bills.... but that's a tangent.

Hockey I love the Red Wings, I have since NHL 93... I was always a Blackhawk fan until then. I was playing in dorm tourney (yes I should have in class at the time) and in the finals and down by 5 goals into the third period. I ended up scoring 6 goals in the 5 minute period. (5 moves(deke) and a 1 timer) to notch the greatest come from behind win ever! Later that year I did the same thing with Quebec Nordiques, I loved they had a center that could score on all 3 lines. Then they ruined it by moving to Colorado and became the hated Avs, who I can't stand... much like I feel about the Cubs.

In basketball I was always a Laker fan after Sid and the bucks, probably because my dad was a Celtic fan. Magic, Worthy, Jabaar, Scott... man I loved that team, and the NBA back then. Now, I don't watch a single game unless I'm with someone who happens to watch, like my sis.

In baseball... I always liked the Indians and the Braves, and I have no rational explanation why... Major League proved to me that I wasn't alone, then in the 90s both teams got good and it wasn't as fun to be a fan anymore, but I still remain loyal.

I'd say I have a thing for the underdog team, but the Lakers really didn't fit that description, they've been decent most of my life time, at any rate, that's my list.

I don't really have any other favorite teams, other than Wisconsin teams. I guess if I had to pick different favorites, in every sport/league i'd go Texas for college football/basketball, Boston/Atlanta for baseball, Indiana/Dallas for basketball, New Orleans and Indianapolis for football, and I don't have any opinion about hockey. I guess my favorite team would be either Detroit or Anaheim if I followed hockey.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers. I moved from Wisconsin to Sarasota, Florida in 1984 at 8 years old...I had been going to Brewers games since I was a toddler but didn't follow any other sport and my family weren't huge football fans. By the time I got interested in fottball, it was from going to see the local team play. This was the late 80s, they were really awful for the first 10 years I followed them, which made the Super Bowl win all the sweeter.

NHL: Carolina Hurricanes

Did my pastoral internship in Greensboro, NC. Member of congregation's son was/is Video Coordinator for team: breaks down video of players and line shifts, so that coaches can study them. Was down there for the Hurricanes' first Stanley Cup run (2001-2002 season, lost to Red Wings). The guy got his dad and me coach's tickets to a playoff game vs. Montreal. Never sat in mezzanine before, probably never will; but it was golden. Since then have been a diehard fan, even jumping around like a crazed man up here in Iowa when they won the Cup in 2006.

NCAA: Central Michigan University

Alma mater. Usually terrible, especially in non-conference. Occasional bowl game (2006 MAC Champs) or basketball tourney berth.

Otherwise, am diehard Brewers/Badgers/Packers fan.

I've been a 49ers fan from a very young age. I'm not completely sure why, but I think it had something to do with their success when I was an impressionable little kid and their sweet uniforms--how can one not love the red and gold (actually gold, not an ugly yellow color that for some reason is called gold by a certain NFL team in the Midwest) as displayed above?. I used to kinda dig the packers as a second team behind the Niners, but now I just can't stand the packers that much. I don't necessarily root against them, just don't generally root for them.

As for Michigan, I'm pretty sure I became a fan of them when I was about 3 years old. I decided to like Michigan because my mom went to Ohio State, and, wanting nothing to do with that nasty team that she cheered for, I chose the maize and blue as my team. I have since backed off the Michigan love a little bit as I am a UW student, and I am now more of a Badger fan than a Wolverine fan (that was a tough conversion at first, though). But I still cheer for Michigan when they're not playing the Badgers, particularly in football. And I hate Ohio State. Man do I hate them.

There's something about being a Brewers fan that has messed me up as far as aligning with another team. It's hard for me to jump on any bandwagon if the team's already a winner. Apparently I need to see a team go from nothing and grow into something. When I moved to Denver for a time, I couldn't make myself be an Avs fan because they always won.

My order of who to root for in a game:

1. Whatever Wisconsin team

2. Whatever team might help Wisconsin (like rooting for the Bears if their win would help the Packers)

3. The small-market team

4. The underdog

In sports i have second favorite teams, but there is no non-wisconsin team that i like more than the respective wisconsin team in the same league.

MLB: Oakland A's (just loved those late 80's early 90's teams when i was first getting into baseball)

NFL: Cleveland Browns

NBA: Seattle Supersonics

NCAA: Notre Dame

(you will notice that these teams are not in the same league as the wisconsin teams, which helps)

NFL- Miami Dolphins. My uncle was a college roomie of Stu Voigt and used to get all this cool Viking stuff and give it to my brother. So the 1st football game I ever watched and paid attention to was the '73 Superbowl. I cheered hard for Miami that day because it made my bro so mad and I guess I haven't stopped.

NHL- Redwings

NBA- Utah Jazz. I was a big fan of Pistol Pete, Gail Goodrich, Truck Robinson. Then Malone and Stockton. I really liked Ice and the Spurs back then too. Remember the really big basketball cards? Classic.

MLB- I liked the Astros in the Hawaiian Sunset era, We Are Family Pirates and the Padres McDonalds days. My friend and I would spend our summer vacations playing Strat-o-matic and I would always play the NL games for some reason.

I'm kind of wishywashy on my "other" teams. I probably need to lock that down, so here goes. I always like to pick a team in another league.

MLB: Boston Red Sox

NFL: Buffalo Bills (this one has been since 6th grade)

NBA: Minnesota Timberwolves

Colleges (other than Wisconsin): Tennessee

But I still love the Brewers, the Pack, the Badgers, and the Bucks.

PS- Hockey isn't a real sport.

oh, you americans, show some love for soccer!

no one even mentioned it, but you have dozens of great teams and players....ehm maybe not!

i am a die hard of Inter Milan,

reguarding american teams, i support the lakers (when i was a kid the italian television broadcasted a game a week, on sunday morning, sixers, celtics and lakers were the typical teams involved, my elder brother choosed docj, and larry bird was rather scaring for a little kid, so i choosed the lakers)

i usually watch NFL PO, and usually root for the underdogs.
