What happened to Chris Capuano in 2007? (Merged: not as bad as it might seem)

Ennder
Couldn't having a high BB% in the early innings be adversely effected by starts where he had poor control? Those starts would not effect his 4th-6th innings since he would have been pulled before that when his control is bad.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

Rumor has it that Cappy's girlfriend of 2 years broke up with him in the beginning of the season and began to date JJ Hardy (He never won a game after). No idea how true this rumor is, but its according to a guy that comes into my work...apparently he works with this girls dad (shes originally from the SE Wisconsin area but now lives in Arizona) Who knows how factual this scenario actually is.

I suppose, but if we use him as a reliever, that 9.5% BB rate is what we are going to get. I could take out all of his sub 4 inning starts and then recalc, but I'm too lazy. Maybe tomorrow.

I was just wondering. I was always somewhat amused by splits like that. Especially when announcers talk about how a pitcher was really strong later in games. For example, Vargas has a .250 BAA in the 7-9 innings. My thought is always, he doesn't get into those later innings unless he was having a good game so of course he has a lower BAA later in games.

I think Cappy has seen his best days. His career path is very similar to that of Shawn Estes - another lefty who had a huge year out of no where, then got "figured out" by the rest of the league and had difficulty keeping his ERA under 5 for the rest of his career.

But none of that is true at all. If you just look at ERA and W/L record, then you're right. But ERA is highly dependent on defense and W/L tells you nothing of how a pitcher performed. He has pitched better this year than in his "breakout" year of 2005. Just look to the stats posted by ennder to see why. Terrible luck (LOB%) and terrible defense (40 point rise in BABIP) have been the reason why Cappy has struggled.
