last years snooze fest offense.

Oh man tell me about it. I hated the offense they ran too. The dump and chase, they just took it out of their zone got it past center moved it into the opponents zone and then had to chase it down. Other teams caught onto this and would always have somebody back to chase down the puck.

I can't say I'm totally surprised by Turris. I mean yes, he's a freshman, but 17 of our 26 guys are underclassman. The freshman thing just won't work as an excuse. There's a whole lot of talent in that newest class. There's no way they stick around for 4 years, but here's hoping this year is the warm up and next year is the run before they all go pro.

There was a big offensive hole for someone (or I guess, multiple guys) to fill. Turris had the talent, it was just yet to be decided if he had the leadership to step up.

I only saw Friday's game. Patrick Johnson is one small little kid. Did he get pushed around?

From what I saw no. He's a quick, shifty little guy so he can get around pushing and checks and you can always combat his size by putting your best defensive line out.

Wow! 15 goals in 2 games. I know Robert Morris isn't exactly North Dakota, but it was sure fun to watch this year's offense. Turris plays like he's been there before, I can't wait to see him in a few months.

That is their offense system though. Dump and chase. It is what they have done since Eves took over. When we won the national championship they had guys that could create on their own. Last year they didn't. This year we have defenders that can come up and help.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

I know it's their system I still don't like it. I know we're known more for defense and goaltending but I hope Eaves recruits a little more towards offense or you're going to have that great goaltending and defense spoiled.

I agree that it is an ugly system, but it keeps them in games even if they don't score a lot of goals. I think a lot of their success in 05-06 had to do with their defensemen having some offensive skills and having a couple guys who could create on their own. It looks like we might have some of those types of guys this year. One thing I noticed is that most of the passes looked to go from stick to stick, where last year they seemed to just miss passes almost all of the time. I know it is only 2 games and we didn't exactly play a good team so that might be part of it.

Oh man, this thread makes me very happy! I LOVE badger hockey! I love the new ticket distribution system because it gave me the best seats I've ever had (Friday and Saturday, section 117, row D... if you are wondering who is starting all the chants from the left side of the student section, that would be our row), and I didn't even have to wait out in line for 2 weeks http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif. The best part about it is we are right next to the opponent tunnel. Boucher and Russel (Robert Morris's goalies) must hate me.

Anyways, there are a few things I would like to say on this year's team.

- The goaltending will be more of a strength that many were expecting. Connelly will be a surprise, that little guy looked very good on Friday night. Gudmandson will be a decent backup, for a freshman. He will lose a few games, but he showed some very good athleticism on Saturday with some spectacular saves.

- The defense will also be solid. Drewiske and Klubertanz make for a nice veteran first line, but after them we will have to rely on younger guys. I am a little more reserved about young defenders than I am with younger scorers because I feel defense takes much more discipline than offense. McDonagh was the number one defensive recruit and he may be gone after this season, but I feel he still has some growing to do.

- The offense will be fine. I don't think this last series will be indicitive of the rest of the season. The WCHA will be much more difficult than Robert Morris. I will say this though, Kyle Turris is an absolute stud. Get your fill now Badger fans, because he will be gone after this season. He is currently leading the nation in both goals and assists. I cannot believe that he is a freshman. He may be the most talented scorer ever to come to this program. Ben Street will also make large strides this year.

- The power play and penalty kill lines were what I was most impressed with this weekend. They were both weaknesses of the team last year and they seem to have turned it around into a major strength.

- As for best value on campus, its hard for me to not pick Women's Vball. You can watch a top ten team for $5 ($2 if you are a student) along with tons of knowledgable fans. There are tons of little kids, but that's the only draw back. Hockey is a very close second. Depending on your preference, football and basketball are 3rd and 4th.

I hope we can keep this thread active all year, I would love to chat it up with my fellow Crease Creatures.

WCHA is always strong. We always have over half of our teams in the top 15 and usually all but one or two in the top 20. Helps to have the national champion come out of your conference for 5 years straight also.

I also have student hockey tickets...section 210. Our section is generally terrible so far (people sitting down and not cheering), but our row has decided that we're going to try and get it going at the next game. Hockey games are definitely more fun that football or basketball games at UW and they are dirt cheap.

  • 2 weeks later...

I was going to bump this thread after the win tonight but was too lazy to go back and find it. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

I just found out today that games are being showed on WMLW so I missed the game last night.

the defense was not very solid of Friday night, they took a lot of chances that backfired on them. Saturday was a lot of fun, minus the almost getting kicked out. Apparently my row was swearing more than the rest of the student section during the "where's your fat-bleep" chant. Ridiculous.

Hit some Oshie!

Any Oshie!

Every Oshie!

HARD!!!!

OY!

obsessedwithbrewcrew, good for you. I've been a Badger fan since I was "introduced" to sports as a 7 year old in the mid-90's and fan support over the past few years is the weakest I can remember.

It seems like Badger fans are spoiled by 10 win seasons in football and 25-30 for basketball. I'll take the wins, but the arrogant, lazy, fan support bugs me.

Having been around for the "before" era, I am still kind of stunned by this - but yeah, there is jadedness creeping into Badger Nation, at least for the two "biggest" sports.

Less so for hockey, though. Drop the puck!

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

I was introduced to hockey only in the past few years, but was at Saturday's game and it was by far the best played game I've seen. I was at the Frozen Four in Milwaukee and various other games that have been fun or amazing, but Saturday night was just a fabulous game. The teams were both physical. There was a ton of anitcipation and edge of our seatedness. There were so many almost chances. The crowd was really into it. Seriously, best all around game I've been to yet.
