THREE HOMERS PACE POWER IN RECORD BREAKING WIN

 

The 1990 Charleston Wheelers and 2004 Charleston Alley Cats both won 12 games in a row and both made playoff appearances. The 2007 West Virginia Power did them one better as they hit three home runs and pounded out 18 hits en route to setting the franchise record for most consecutive victories with their 13th victory in a row in a 10-4 win over the Lexington Legends on Thursday night.

 

Lexington jumped out to a 2-0 lead after an RBI single from Eric Taylor in the second inning and a Jordan Parraz solo home run in the third. The Power cut the lead in half on Jimmy Mojica's run-scoring double in the fourth inning. The Power took the lead on a pair of home runs in the sixth inning. Steve Chapman tied the game on a solo home run, his second of the year and Darren Ford gave the Power the lead on a two-run homer, his first of the season.

 

West Virginia pulled away with a five-run seventh inning. Taylor Green hit a solo homer, West Virginia's third of the game, and his first of the season to plate the first run of the inning. Ford ripped an RBI single before Anderson Delarosa doubled in two and Delarosa scored later in the inning on Jhon Florentino's throwing error.

 

Lexington scored their final two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on an RBI single from Ralph Henriquez and Parraz scored on a wild pitch. West Virginia scored one final time on Delarosa's sacrifice fly in the ninth inning which plated Mojica.

 

Mike Ramlow (2-0) earned the victory. He surrendered a pair of runs on six hits through five innings and struck out five without issuing a walk. Kyle DeYoung (1-2) took the loss. West Virginia's three home runs set a single game season high, and they tied their single game season high in hits with 18. Brent Brewer was ejected in the fifth inning for arguing balls and strikes, Kenny Holmberg left the game two innings earlier which forced the Power to use Delarosa at first base and Martin Maldonado at third.

 

The Power improved to 15-3 with the win and the Legends fell to 9-12 with the loss. Darren Ford had an outstanding game, pacing the Power with five hits. The 21-year-old center fielder has hit safely in 12 of his 13 games and is batting .385.

He also scored twice and knocked in three runs. Five Power players finished with a pair of hits, Steve Chapman and Maldonado scored three times each, while Delarosa drove in three.

 

The Power will continue the four game series against Lexington at Applebees Park on Friday night. The Power will start right hander Roque Mercedes (0-1, 20.77) and the Legends will counter with right hander Casey Hudspeth (1-2, 4.74). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central).

West Virginia had a lot riding on the game Thursday night, and it showed. They fought through two defensive replacements in the infield - one due to injury and the other to ejection - to crush 18 hits and set a franchise record with their 13th consecutive victory, 10-4, over the home standing Legends. Six different Power hitters had multiple hits, and they were paced by leadoff hitter Darren Ford, who went 5-for-6 with a double, a home run, three RBI, and two runs scored in the winning effort.

 

Half an hour before the game's scheduled start time, rain was coming down in sheets and the tarpaulin was firmly planted on the Applebee's Park infield. However, the sun soon peeked out from behind the clouds, and the grounds crew was able to get the game ready after a 42 minute delay.

 

Lexington was in control early. Jimmy Van Ostrand led off the second inning with a single up the middle against Power starter Mike Ramlow (2-1). An out later, Koby Clemens singled and Van Ostrand went to second. Ralphie Henriquez beat out a double play grounder to extend the inning, and Eric Taylor brought Van Ostrand home with a line drive that trickled into center field. In the next inning, Jordan Parraz made it a 2-0 score with a home run off the out-of-town scoreboard in center, his second of the year.

 

The Power got on the board in the next inning. When Steve Chapman called time just as Legends starter Polin Trinidad was beginning his windup, an obviously displeased Trinidad hit Chapman with his next pitch. After both benches were warned by home plate umpire Drew Ashcraft, Jimmy Mojica drove Chapman home with a double into the left-center field gap.

 

Not long after Kenny Holmberg left the game with an undisclosed injury, shortstop Brent Brewer was quickly tossed after striking out looking to lead off the fifth. He left the field in a hurry, not stopping to argue the decision. The ejection put Power manager Mike Guerrero in a bind, with every infielder shifting to a new position. However, it was the Legends' defense that would suffer all night, committing five errors.

 

Trinidad, having given the Legends five strong innings, saw Lexington manager Greg Langbehn turn the ball over to Kyle DeYoung to begin the sixth. That's when the floodgates opened. Chapman, Ford, and defensive replacement Taylor Green all homered in the next two innings, helping West Virginia to a huge lead. DeYoung (1-2) would be pulled with two outs in the seventh, having given up six runs (four earned) on six hits. He managed to strike out one without walking a batter. Corey Bass relieved him and fared moderately better, yielding three runs (one earned) in two and one-third innings of work.

 

The Legends added a pair of runs in the eighth on four singles to close the score to 9-4, but never seriously threatened West Virginia's grasp on the game.

Fermaint, Manatees squeak past Mets

 

Charlie Fermaint's sacrifice fly in the 10th inning lifted visiting Brevard County to a 4-3 win over St. Lucie on Thursday.

 

Michael Bell led off the 10th with a single and advanced on a walk and Carlos Corporan's sacrifice bunt.

 

After allowing Sean Henry's game-tying solo homer with two outs in the ninth, reliever Luis Pena (4-0) picked up the win with a perfect 10th. He went two innings and struck out one for the Manatees (11-8).

 

Jesse Harper started and went five innings for Brevard County, surrendering two runs on six hits and one walk while striking out three.

 

Chris Errecart gave the Manatees a 3-2 lead with a two-run double in the eighth before the Mets (10-9) sent the game into extra innings.

Winning Streak Halted With 8-4 Loss To Royals

 

OMAHA ? The Nashville Sounds had their seven-game winning streak come to a close with an 8-4 loss to the division-rival Omaha Royals on Thursday evening at Rosenblatt Stadium in the opener of a four-game series.

 

The eight runs allowed were Nashville?s most surrendered since a 10-2 defeat on April 16 at New Orleans. Omaha halted a four-game skid with the victory. The Sounds (13-7) remain in first place in the PCL American Conference Northern Division.

 

Brad Nelson continued his hot hitting to lead Nashville on the evening, finishing 2-for-3 and homering in his fourth consecutive start. The first baseman has recorded a hit in nine of his last 10 games, with the only miss coming in a pinch-hit appearance on Tuesday.

 

The Sounds took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning with a two-out rally against Omaha right-hander Scott Elarton, who was making a rehabilitation start. J.D. Closser opened the frame by drawing a walk before the next two batters were retired on fly outs. With two down, Nelson singled to right to move Closser to third and Callix Crabbe followed by playing the catcher with the game?s first run on an RBI single to right.

 

Omaha bounced back in the bottom of the frame and grabbed a 4-1 lead with a two-out rally of its own against Zach Jackson. Richard Lewis drew a two-out walk, stole second, and moved to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a Justin Huber single to left. Paul Phillips singled to move Huber to third before Joey Gathright and Angel Berroa followed with consecutive RBI singles to break the tie and spot the Royals a two-run advantage. The fourth run of the inning scored unearned a batter later when Sounds shortstop Chris Barnwell was unable to handle a Shane Costa grounder, allowing Gathright to reach home.

 

Nashville pulled back within a run in the top of the third. Drew Anderson opened the inning with a single and Vinny Rottino doubled to put runners on second and third with no outs. Ryan Braun plated Anderson with a sacrifice fly to center and Closser singled home Rottino to reduce the Omaha lead to 4-3. The hit snapped an 0-for-14 funk for the Sounds backstop.

 

The Royals again had an answer for the Sounds, scoring a run in the bottom of the frame when Mike Aviles came plateward on a Lewis sacrifice fly to make it a 5-3 contest.

 

Nelson continued his recent longball spree in the sixth for the Sounds, homering for the fourth straight start to bring Nashville within one run at 5-4. The two-out solo blast to right off Elarton was the first baseman?s fourth of the season.

Omaha wrapped up the evening?s scoring in the seventh with three runs against Sounds reliever Lindsay Gulin, who made his first appearance of the season.

 

Elarton (1-1) picked up his first Triple-A victory of the season after allowing four runs on eight hits over 5 2/3 innings of work. Jackson (3-2) had his three-start winning streak snapped for the Sounds as he took the loss. The left-hander gave up five runs (four earned) on seven hits in his five frames.

 

The teams continue the series with a 7:05 p.m. meeting on Friday at Rosenblatt. Nashville native R.A. Dickey (1-2, 7.00), who earned his first Sounds victory in his last outing, will take the hill and face Royals right-hander Zach Day (0-0, 3.38).

Rehabbing Kansas City pitcher Scott Elarton wasn't tiring in the sixth inning.

 

He was trying to be economical.

 

After shaking off early command issues and getting into a groove Thursday night against Nashville, Elarton took the mound for the Omaha Royals in the sixth knowing he had just nine pitches left in his 80-pitch limit.

 

He knew he was down to two when Brad Nelson stepped to the plate with two out.

 

"I thought I'd throw him off-speed first, then try to get him out on the second pitch," Elarton said. "I didn't get to throw the second one. It was a high changeup and he put a good swing on it."

 

Nelson, the former Nebraska recruit from Algona, Iowa, hit a home run and Callix Crabbe singled on Elarton's next - and last - pitch, but the Royals were able to hold onto a 5-4 lead and turned it into an 8-4 win before 1,544 (paid) at Rosenblatt Stadium.

Barons Blank Stars in Series Opener

 

Adam Russell, Carlos Vasquez and Oneli Perez combined on a three-hit shutout, as Birmingham blanked Huntsville 1-0 Thursday night in the opener of a five-game set at Regions Park. The Barons ended a five-game losing streak and improved to 12-9 on the season, while the Stars were shut out for the first time this season and fell to 9-10 but remained tied for the top spot in the North Division after Tennessee was defeated at home by Carolina.

 

Russell allowed just three singles and did not permit a runner past second base in his second six inning scoreless performance of the season. The right-hander fanned five and issued one walk and picked up his first win in three starts against the Stars dating back to July 24 of last season. Vasquez retired all six hitters he faced and Perez set down the side in order in the ninth to record his first save of the season. The Birmingham trio of hurlers retired the last 13 hitters they faced and did not allow a hit after Mel Stocker?s two-out single in the fifth.

 

Stars? starter Sam Narron stranded a runner at third base in each of the first three innings but gave up the game?s only run in the fourth with a little bit of controversy. Ricardo Nanita, who reached after a failed sacrifice bunt attempt, seemed to get picked off at first base but was able to slide in and around the tag of shortstop Yohannis Perez at second base after a throw from first baseman Steve Sollmann to pick up his second stolen base of the season. Stars? manager Don Money, who just returned to the team after an absence due to the death of his father, argued the call to no avail. Robert Valido, a .190 hitter entering the game, reached for a Narron offering and dumped a two-out single into right field. Brendan Katin?s throw to the plate was up the third base line and Nanita was able to slide around catcher Max St. Pierre and reach back and tag the plate to score. Narron then walked Jason Bourgeios and hit Chris Getz to load the bases but retired Jeremy West on a ground ball to end the inning.

 

Corey Thurman worked a scoreless sixth inning and Grant Balfour retired all six hitters he faced in relief in his third scoreless outing of the road trip. Stars? centerfielder Steve Moss went hitless in four at-bats and lost an 11-game hitting streak, flying out to the wall in left-center field in his final at-bat in the ninth, while Sollmann lost a six-game hit string after also going hitless in four tries.

West Virginia Power picks up its record-breaking 13th straight win

Although the score might suggest otherwise, the West Virginia Power's milestone victory wasn't an easy one.

 

Of course, that only added to the appreciation of the accomplishment.

 

After losing its middle infielders in the second and fifth innings Thursday, West Virginia rallied for its record-breaking 13th consecutive victory -- a 10-4 win over host Lexington (Ky.) at Applebee's Park. Rain delayed the two-hour, 53-minute game by 42 minutes.

 

The 13-game winning streak is believed to be a franchise record for Class A clubs, which have played in Charleston since 1987.

 

The previous mark of 12 belonged to the 1990 Wheelers and 2004 Alley Cats, both of whom made the South Atlantic League playoffs.

 

"That's a good mark for the kind of team we have," Power Manager Mike Guerrero said during a postgame telephone interview. "We have guys who are hungry and have a lot of heart. They don't take anything for granted. They just go out there and play hard everyday."

 

West Virginia lost second baseman Kenny Holmberg to an injury in the second and shortstop Brent Brewer to an ejection in the fifth, forcing Guerrero to put Anderson De La Rosa at first base, Taylor Green at second base, Jimmy Mojica at shortstop and Martin Maldonado at third base.

 

Thursday was the first time De La Rosa, Green and Maldonado had played at those positions this season. De La Rosa normally is an outfielder or catcher, Green usually is a third baseman and Maldonado normally is a catcher.

 

Maldonado started the game at first base, which is his secondary role. De La Rosa and Green came off the bench.

 

Overcoming that adversity "makes this win really special," Guerrero said, "but it also shows the character of this team. They are willing to do whatever it takes to be a team and get the win."

 

The Northern Division-leading Power (15-3) matched its season high with 18 hits against the Legends (9-12).

 

West Virginia has reached double digits in that category in 10 of its 18 games this season, including seven in a row.

 

The Power had six players with multiple hits. Center fielder Darren Ford had a team-high five hits. Michael Brantley, De La Rosa, Green, Maldonado and Mojica added two apiece.

 

Ford and De La Rosa led the Power with three RBI apiece. Stephen Chapman and Mojica each scored a team-high three runs, one more than Ford.

 

"I just want to give all of the thanks to God," Ford said, "because if it wasn't for Him, none of this would be possible.

 

"I was seeing the ball good, I stayed within myself and I didn't try to do too much."

 

A season-high three home runs set the tone for the Power surge.

 

Two of those came in the sixth inning. Chapman tied the score at two with a solo shot, and then Ford gave the Power a 4-2 lead with a two-run blast.

 

Green added a solo shot in the seventh. If that wasn't enough, the Power added four more insurance runs in that inning on three hits and two errors.

 

West Virginia starter Mike Ramlow (2-1) got the win. The left-hander allowed two runs (both earned) on six hits in five innings with five strikeouts and no walks.

 

Lexington reliever Kyle DeYoung (1-2) took the loss. The right-hander surrendered six runs (four earned) on six hits (three home runs) in only 1 2/3 innings.

 

The teams will continue their four-game series at 7:05 tonight (6:05 Central) at Applebee's Park. The Power will start right-hander Roque Mercedes (0-1, 20.77). The Legends will throw right-hander Casey Hudspeth (1-2, 4.74).
