The "Seriously, I don't get it - that song isn't that good" thread.

DougJones43

If you are really asking me to name a song that just about everyone I know likes, but I don't, it would have to be:

Free Bird

I can not stand songs that go on and on and on, especially when half of it has no words, just a seemingly endless guitar solo. There are so many people that just worship that song.

About once a year 103.7 plays a good song. The rest are all crap.

The Romantic Period after Beethoven is pretty lacking also. I was the only one in college that didn't have that as their favorite time period. I'd rather have a good Baroque counterpoint then listen to another Chopin piece that goes nowhere and means nothing.

I can contribute to this thread....

Signs -- by Telsa/5MEB -- the lead character in the song just comes off as a jerk to me.

Wreck of the E.F. -- The only thing worse than a song about a boating tragedy is making it 25 minutes long

GREASE -- If you are a 9 year old girl, I can understand the attraction, but how anyone can listen to Summer Nights is beyond me.

Bob Seger -- Esp. Old Time Rock n Roll -- The song was way more popular than it needed to be. Generally speaking any song that encourages the dinosaurs in my parents generation to dance and makes them feel relevant should be discouraged.

Night Ranger - Sister Christian -- This song is the poster child song for bands who don't rock, but think that they do.

Frampton Comes Alive -- I know chicks dig this album, I am not sure why. Besides it's obligatory inclusion in make-out mix tapes, I am pretty sure this album is garbage.

Fatter than Joey...I have always sensed from some of your posts that you really do not like old people (make them feel relevant? Old people are not relevant?). Why such hatred?

Here's another vote for Fergie (The Alanis parody is hilarious)

Nickelback is the most overplayed and overrated band on the radio today

I can't stand Hey there Delilia either. I guess it reminds me that evening radio show with Delilia (Yuck).

And just about anything on Kiss FM or KTI.

What the....!

Neil Diamond is the greatest singer song writer of this or any generation!

There are quite a few songs back in the list that I like. I enjoyed Hey There Delilah two years ago - before it was a hit at all. It was just a small catchy tune off an old Plain White T's album. Then it was played to death. It was what it should have been. I don't think the song sucks nearly as much as it does now on account of it being a SMASH hit. Now it feels like my head is being drilled into.

I am going to make my arguments based largely on lyrics. I HATE when a musician can't write a decent lyrics.

Anything by Nickleback.

"Look at this photograph, every time I do it makes me laugh, how did our eyes get so red...and what the hell was on Joey's head"

Honestly, they just needed something to rhyme with red. Never write a song with the line "what the hell was on Joey's head" as part

of the refrain.

Any Live song.

let's go hang out in a mall, or a morgue, a smorgasbord

let's go hang out in a church, we'll go find lurch

and

let's go hang out in a bar, it's not too far, we'll take my car

Honestly, are you even trying with lyrics that bad? You just rhymed church with lurch. And then figured out a way to make bar, far and car rhyme. A 3-yr old could honestly have written this song.

Beyonce - Irreplaceable

Matter fact, he'll be here in a minute (Baby)

I could have another you in a minute

Congratulations! You just figured out how to rhyme the word "minute" with the word - "minute"! (Might be time to expand the vocabulary.)

Ok - those are my vents.

Generally speaking this is correct. I find them to be entirely overrated as a whole, sort of like bunting/small ball.

Why such hatred?

Hatred is such a strong word -- I generally only reserve for used book store employees.

With regard to this thread, I don't like music that is TOP 40 that encourages generations older than mine to think they are hip or dance at weddings. I enjoy music with more of an edge and tends to make my parents feel uneasy and like someone is going to steal their fannypacks.

I know my kids would be mortified if a song came out that encouraged my generation to start breakdancing at weddings, or empowered me to thinking that my coolness in 1986 somehow transfers into current-day coolness.

Old Time Rock n Roll -- was a song whose popularity was fueled by people like my parents thinking it was now OK to start dancing like Chubby Checker and listening to Frankie Valli songs in public again.

Old people are not relevant

I agree 100%

Just a quick point about the 1 2 3 4 song. It is by Feist, that song was released to take her from the indie-coffee house scene, but her last two albums have been great. Do not let that ruin her as a whole for you.

Sorry...she is absolutely ruined for me, forever. That commercial is excrutiatingly horrible, the song is extremely annoying, and it looks like she's trying to be a cheap indie knockoff of Britney Spears in the video.

Granted, I have not heard any of her other songs, but anyone who would release that 1, 2, 3, 4 crap can't really be good for anything else, at least in my mind. Every time that Ipod commercial comes on, I hurry to change the channel. It is easily the most annoying commercial on television, outdistancing the Chevy J.C. Mellencamp "This is my couuunnntttrrryy" commercials and the horrible "heartburn, nausia, indigestion, upset stomach, diarrhea" Pepto Bismal commercials, with the people dancing and pointing to the appropriate parts of their body...yuck. I don't want to think about diarrhea.

Other songs that just aren't good:

Hey Mickey

Video Killed the Radio Star

I agree, anything by Fergie, or the Black Eyed Peas, for that matter

anything by Shania Twain

Beatiful Girls - Sean Kingston sounds like a 14 year old with a speech impediment

You can't blame 'em though, FTJ.....that kind of music just soothes the soul.

Two other comments:

1. The "1,2,3,4" song - I've never heard of Feist before, but she's dead to me now. Here's a tip - if you want to be liked, don't make songs that sound like Bjork only worse.

2. Sister Christian is not a great song, but as a movie fan I tend to associate songs with how they are used in film - thus, I like the song because it reminds me of the scene in "Boogie Nights" where the drug deal is going down. Same thing with Jessie's Girl

Pretty any song on a station like Z104 sucks

That statement on its own makes me smile, but it also reminds me of one of my all-time favorite blurbs in The Onion - from the late 80s, when the publication was both truly local to Madison and truly in its infancy. An early Onion StatShot, one of the few features which continues today, made fun of the old Z-104 slogan "Playin' the hits for Madison (ba-dump) Z-104!" by rearranging the letters in 'hits' to spell a word that would be filtered here but, I thought, described the Z104 playlist pretty well at the time.

And as for Neil Diamond...I can't escape him. The S.O. is a big fan, has all his albums, has seen him in concert (bought one ticket when Neil played the Kohl Center). It's not like he's blasting Neil all the time, so I can coexist with this. It's just weird, though, because the guy I dated before Tom was not only a Neil Diamond fan, his whole family was. They'd buy his concerts on videodisc (the 80s version of that technology) and watch them together, and invite me to join them. Could be a lot worse, but it's still weird.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

My job this summer had me driving about 4-5 hours of my 8 hour shift...and sometimes I would get paired with this guy who always wanted to listen to 103.7

I'm convinced that they loop 5-6 songs all day until they've been done to death. Then they find another 5-6 songs.

Luckily, he got fired.

"In the Air Tonight" by Phil Collins. Truth be told, I pretty much dislike every song that Phil attached his vocals to, but of all the massive suckery he's contributed to the world, I think this one might take the cake. It just goes on and on and on ... boring ... repetitive ... no melody ... and Phil's Winwood-esque vocals, ahhh.

Anything by the Police or Sting.

Anything by U2 except for Red Hill Mining Town.

Anything from Peter Gabriel's solo career, excluding Don't Give Up w/ Kate Bush and In Your Eyes (thanks to some Say Anything bonus points).

American Pie and Sweet Caroline were also great calls.

And althought it pains me to do this, I'm going to say "Tom Sawyer" by Rush because I've started to really dislike it. They're one of my favorite bands, but I don't understand how this song became their highest charting and trademark hit ... and the one that gets played the most on classic rock stations. Just to name a few, songs like "Limelight", "Freewill", "Subdivisions", and "Time Stand Still" are all not only better, but would seem to be more mainstream friendly, too.

Agreed. I'm a big Rush fan, but Tom Sawyer would probably barely crack my top 10 Rush songs. I find it surprising that it's played on the radio more than the others you mentioned too.

I think that it's supposed to be sort of chic because deep down it's kind of dorky, so it's cool to like it in an ironic way.

I think you just described the indie music phenomenon for me. Thanks.

I'd have to say all "new" rap fits into the way overrated category for me. It's the same recycled crap over and over. I'm convinced that there are rap producers who have songs already made from some kind of "rap-formula" that they just record the artist's voice over. Boom...instant radio hit.

They all suck and they're all overrated.

Blasphemer! It's not meant to be good lyrically, just a good groove to dance to.

I'll say anything by Dave Matthews Band. Alright, I get the point of a jam band, even though I'd prefer a G Love and Special Sauce or something with a little more funk. But Dave Matthews's vocals sound like a wounded dog.
