The "Seriously, I don't get it - that song isn't that good" thread.

DougJones43

Here is where you can post songs that are immensely popular, and you don't really understand why. They don't necessarily have to be bad songs, but they certainly don't seem worthy of the hype. Feel free to add commentary along the way. I'll start.

"Pour Some Sugar on Me" by Def Leppard
"Livin' on a Prayer" by Bon Jovi (and pretty much anything by Bon Jovi for that matter)

- Both these songs still get constant airplay on all different genres of radio stations. And if one of them come on at a bar or party, people still freak out. They're not terrible songs, but I definitely got sick of them after hearing them 8,793 times. Kind of cheesy and annoying if you ask me (which, I know, nobody did).

"Beautiful Girls" by Sean Kingston

- Hooray! Another crappy rap song that is sampled from a decent older song, hence completely ruining the old version of the song for all intents and purposes. The sad thing is, most of the 17-year-olds who think it's awesome don't even realize the backdrop of the song existed before this dude stole it.

All of yours are very good, I hate them all.

Sweet Caroline. Yeah, yeah, yeah, you love it and think it's a great song. That's because you're a white guy. White people can't control themselves when that song is on and start yelling out stupid chants. "So good! So good! So good!" I have somehow evolved beyond my apparent whiteguyness.

Hey there delilah - sucks

Anything by Fergie - she's awful

Anything by Gwen Stefani - stupid catchy hooks don't do it for me

That 1234 song on the Ipod commercial - it sucks.

Crank dat soulja boy - I don't even need to explain this

Sweet Caroline
That's exactly what I'm talking about. I can't believe I didn't think of that. It's like somehow become "common knowledge" that it's a great old song, and everybody needs to sing along like a goof when it comes on. Why? I think that it's supposed to be sort of chic because deep down it's kind of dorky, so it's cool to like it in an ironic way. I really don't hear anything in it that makes it musically worth listening to. To me, it sounds like something that should be used in a commercial.

Also, I wanted to add a disclaimer to this thread. If people trash something you happen to like, please try not to get offended. It's all about personal tastes, opinions, and is meant to be 100% fun-natured.

Every song by Dave Matthews and/or Dave Matthews Band. Living on a college campus it seems that half of the students treat him as a God, and I really don't understand it. I realize that both he and the band members are probably very talented and they're obviously popular, but their music is extremely boring to me. While I can't say I like any of his songs, I don't necessarily hate all of them. However, "Grave Digger" to me is just plain bad.

Another mark against "Pour Some Sugar On Me" and "Livin On A Prayer" is that they are impossible to dance to. If those songs come on at a wedding, people go nuts, but I've found there is really no good way to dance to them.

Also, the way the word suicidal is used and how often you hear it in "Beautiful Girls" is off-putting for me.

The one song that I will throw into the ring is "Brown-Eyed Girl" by Van Morrison. And much like "Sweet Caroline" and Neil Diamond, I find myself liking the whole body of work by the artist but just can't get up for either song anymore.

Sweet Child of Mine - Guns N Roses

No idea why, but I really don't like GNR.

Edit: my theory behind Sweet Caroline is that it only gets played to drunk people. Any song that allows drunk people to yell at the top of their lungs will gain popularity.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

I say this all the time, and this thread seems like a decent place to bring it up, so...

How can Aerosmith be the band who did "Dream On?" Look at the rest of their songs... They're pretty much awful! I just don't get it. I really like "Dream On."

I really can't stand that one Tenacious D song to which every dude at a bar or party or something would sing along when it came on. Something about softly or gently doing something, I really can't remember, but that used to piss me off (and still would if I ever heard it again). Actually, I don't get Tenacious D. I don't think they're funny, and I don't think they play good music. So....what's the point?

Although I like Tenacious D for the most part, I tend to agree with you on this one. When people know all the words to a song (especially a dirty, sexual song) they feel the need to prove it EVERY time they get a chance by bellowing as loud as possible.

Wow I'm not the only one who doesn't like Fergie.

I agree with the Sean Kingston song. Crank Dat makes me laugh, but it is a terrible song.

Almost everything KISS plays is terrible/doesn't deserve the hype, lol.

The two songs that actually cause my stomach to get queezy at the sound of them are

1.Bridge Over Troubled Waters by Simon Garfunkel------I used to worked at a place that had a station on and that song came on about once or twice a day.I literally had to cover my ears each time it came on.

2.Love Song by The Cure--Robert Smith, the lead singer, has a voice that grosses me out to no end.I years ago dated a girl who loved The Cure and had a poster of them on her bedroom wall. The sight of Smith disturbed me as much as his voice, god i hate that band.

If i had some secret information that was needed, the quickest way to torture me would be to tie my arms to a chair and play those two songs over an over.I'd spill the info quicker than if someone beat me with tire iron.

anything country(you can throw Ring of Fire at the top of the list). I never understood how big, tough grown men could get into ballads or sappy music which is what most country is.

New age rap. Granted i am going to be 30 and i dont want to sound like an old man but jeesh do they even try anymore? Back in my day rap had songs that had good rhythm and also had people rapping to the beat or at least in some sort of harmony with the beat. Although i was a huge ICP fan since they came out in 91 so my taste may be a bit skewed.

Pretty any song on a station like Z104 sucks or to be even more specific anything that my wife listens to, except for Nick Lachey, his music is the best.http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/laugh.gif
