Corporan with 4 hits today to raise his average to .380. He was probably the big loser in the Hendrickson trade. Otherwise, he'd be paired with Captain Lou in Huntsville right now.

Tim Dillard allows a bunch of base runners---Mitch Stetter not so good, but Alec Zumwalt great.

Thanks as always, my Link Report tag-team partner.

Inherited runners-scored: Zumwalt 3-3

I find myself almost always reviewing the "inherited runners" line within a box score before any other, trying to give myself an accurate read on the pitching lines. Zumwalt came in after Mitch Stetter's bases loaded, no out mess, and went walk, sacrifice fly, RBI groundout -- so technically hit-wise he did OK, but we can't go with a "great" when all three runners score.

Sounds Drop Third Straight To Royals, 8-6

OMAHA ? The Nashville Sounds dropped their third straight game on Saturday evening at Rosenblatt Stadium, falling 8-6 to the division-rival Omaha Royals.

Nashville (13-9) was out-hit 16-9 in the contest; the 16 Omaha hits were the most surrendered by the Sounds in a game this season. All nine Royals recorded a hit and seven different batters posted two hits on the evening.

The three consecutive Sounds losses immediately follow a string of seven straight wins for the club, which remains in first place in the PCL American Conference Northern Division.

Catcher J.D. Closser gave the Sounds a 1-0 lead with a two-out solo home run to right in the top of the first inning. The blast, which came against Omaha starter Matt Wright, was the backstop?s second of the year.

Omaha tied the contest in the bottom of the first when Billy Butler plated Joey Gathright with a two-out RBI single off Nashville starter Tim Dillard.

Nashville pulled ahead 2-1 in the second when Joe Dillon led off with a double and was replaced by pinch-runner Jose Macias. After Macias moved to third on a groundout, he gave the Sounds a one-run cushion by scoring on a Mike Rivera sacrifice fly.

Sounds first baseman Andy Abad (2-for-4), who logged the club?s only multiple-hit effort of the evening, increased the visitors? lead to 3-1 in the fifth when he led off with a solo homer to right off Wright, the veteran?s second longball of the season.

Omaha first baseman Justin Huber put the home team back in front with one swing of the bat in the bottom of the sixth, belting a three-run homer to right with two outs. The blast, which was Huber?s first of the season, chased Dillard and also scored Butler and Mike Aviles.

The Royals tacked on three scores in the seventh against the Nashville bullpen. After Omaha loaded the bases with a pair of singles and a walk against Mitch Stetter, Alec Zumwalt came on for the Sounds and walked Butler to force home Gathright for a 5-3 lead. Aviles followed with a sacrifice fly and Mitch Maier grounded into a run-scoring forceout to extend the Royals? advantage to 7-3.

Vinny Rottino got into the longball act for the Sounds in the eighth, leading off the frame with a solo homer to left off Royals reliever Thad Markray. The blast was the utilityman?s fifth of the year. Nashville pulled within a pair of runs later in the frame when Ozzie Chavez scored on a Closser sacrifice fly to make it a 7-5 contest.

Royals third baseman Fernando Cortez greeted Sounds reliever Lindsay Gulin with a solo homer to right to lead off the bottom of the eighth inning. It was the infielder?s second home run in as many nights and the insurance run pushed the score to 8-5.

Nashville brought the potential tying run to the plate with no outs in the top of the ninth after Macias and Abad opened the frame with a single and double, respectively, against Ken Ray. Rivera struck out before Rottino drove in the game?s final run with a sacrifice fly to bring the score to 8-6. Ray ended the game by retiring Chavez on a groundout.

Markray (1-0) was awarded his first victory of the year despite allowing two runs in his three innings of relief work for the Royals.

Dillard (0-2) remains winless through five starts in his Class AAA career for the Sounds, taking the loss after allowing four runs on 11 hits over 5 2/3 innings of work.

Nashville outfielders threw out a pair of Omaha runners at the plate in the contest: Rottino tossed out Butler from his post in right field in the first and center fielder Drew Anderson nailed Angel Berroa in the third, both with help of a Chris Barnwell relay to the plate.

The Sounds will look to avoid a four-game sweep when the teams wrap up the four-game series with a 1:35 p.m. finale on Sunday afternoon. Right-hander Chris Oxspring (2-1, 1.61) will man the bump for the Sounds and face former Nashville hurler Ben Hendrickson (2-1, 4.98).

Omaha has altered its rotation from earlier this week, so the Sounds will face Ben after all - Mass

Barons Get Another Strong Start To Subdue Stars

Jack Egbert worked six scoreless innings and a three-run second inning rally stood up in Birmingham?s 4-2 victory over Huntsville Saturday night in the middle game of a five-game set at Regions Park. The Barons have taken each of the first three games to improve to 14-9, while the Stars have lost three in a row for a second time this year to fall to 9-12. However, the Stars remain just one game behind North Division-leading Tennessee, which gave up a run in the ninth inning at home and fell to Carolina 5-4.

Egbert blanked the Stars over six innings, allowing two infield singles, walking one and fanning six in lasting at least six frames in each of his five starts. He has been scored on in only three of his five starts, has not yielded more than two runs in any turn and has allowed only one run in 18 innings at home. The Barons? starting threesome of Adam Russell, Gio Gonzalez and Egbert have permitted only two runs on 10 hits over a combined 19 innings of work in the series.

The Barons three runs in the second inning against Stars? starter Adam Pettyjohn marked the second time in as many starts that he has allowed a three-run frame. He has pitched scoreless baseball in the other nine innings in those two outings. Ricardo Nanita singled home Thomas Collaro, who had doubled, with one out and then scored along with Chris Kelly, who had singled, on a two-out, two-strike double to left field by Robert Valido. Pettyjohn suffered his first loss of the season after allowing three runs on five hits over six frames. The veteran left-hander walked three, fanned five and fell for the first time in three road starts.

Fernando Hernandez took over in the seventh inning for the Barons and started the inning by plunking Steve Sollmann before Lou Palmisano belted a 1-2 curveball over the wall in left field for his first home run of the year to trim the home team?s lead to 3-2. Robert Hinton gave up a leadoff double to Nanita in the home seventh and then uncorked consecutive wild pitches to allow the Barons to score an insurance run. The run was the first allowed this season by the Stars? right-hander, who also issued his lone walk in 10 1/3 innings this season.

Hernandez retired the Stars in order in the eighth inning and Carlos Vasquez worked around a one-out single by Sollmann in the ninth to record his second save of the season and the third for the Barons by as many different pitchers in the series.

The series in Birmingham continues Sunday afternoon with southpaw Steve Hammond taking the hill against Barons? left-hander Wes Whisler. Coverage of the game begins at 1:50 p.m. central time and can be heard locally on SportsRadio 730 WUMP and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

PALMISANO HOT, STARS NOT

Birmingham has a legacy of having some of the toughest pitchers in this league for almost as long as I've observed since the Stars have been in the league........ For mostly that reason, the Stars have had a losing record against the Barons every year since 1995, until last year, when they were 9th in the league with a 59-81 record. While their 4.10 ERA doesn't look that bad, it represented the worst mark in the Southern League........

But in the past, the Stars have had to scrape to get runs off the likes of Mark Buehrle (2000), Luis Andujar (1995), James Baldwin (1998), Neal Cotts (2003), Edwin Almonte (2001), Enemencio Pacheco (2004), and oh yes, former Star Joe Valentine, who saved 36 games in 2002....... So the Barons appear to be picking up where they left off......

Adam Russell held the Stars scoreless on three hits for six innings, Thursday. Gio Gonzalez mastered the Stars, Friday, striking out 13, and tonight, Jack Egbert held the Stars scoreless on two hits for six innings....... All in all, their starting rotation, working 19 innings, have held the Stars to two runs on ten hits, struck out 24 and walked just three........ In the ten games before the Stars came to Birmingham, they had hit .246 and were a just-fitting 5-5........ They are hitting just .152 in this series, and are now 3-7 in their last ten games.

The Stars have been scored upon first in 16 of 21 games this year, and are 4-12 when they spot the other team........ 12 times this year, it's been in the 1st inning....... Tonight, the Stars retired the side in order in the 1st for only the 5th time this season, so the Barons waited until the 2nd inning, and then took a 3-0 lead, which was enough.......

Right fielder Thomas Collaro led off with a double to deep center...... After Adam Pettyjohn struck out minor league vet Cory Aldridge, Chris Kelly singled to right, sending Collaro to third....... Richard Nanita then spanked a hard grounder through the infield to right, scoring the first run, and sending Kelly to 2nd....... After Donny Lucy struck out, Robert Valido smashed a double off the left field wall, scoring Kelly and Nanita. Lou Palmisano took the relay in, and seeing Valido was trying for three, threw the ball to Hernan Iribarren, who locked him in a rundown with Jeff Eure for the third out.

Guilder Rodriguez beat out a two-hopper to third with one out in the 3rd inning for the Stars first hit. Another infield single by Palmisano in the 4th would be all the Stars would get until the 7th inning.... Steve Sollmann led off that inning with a walk, then Palmisano hit a hanging curve on a 1-2 pitch from reliever Fernando Hernandez over the wall in left to make it a 3-2 ballgame, his first home run of the season........ Palmisano is 11-for-26 in his last seven games with four doubles, and now a homer in that span. He has six two-hit games this month.

In the bottom half, leadoff hitter Ricardo Nanita doubled to left off new pitcher Robert Hinton, unscored upon in 8 1/3 innings to that point. Consecutive wild pitches to catcher Donny Lucy scored Nanita with the insurance run....... The Stars are down to one pitcher unscored upon this month, except for Bo Hall, who has pitched just one inning -- Marino Salas...... Only two pitchers in Stars history have gone through the first month of the season unscored upon in at least 10 innings of work --- former A's farmhands Joe Klink in 1988 (16 innings) and Steve Phoenix in 1994 (10 1/3 innings)...... The all-time record holder for one month is Scott Erwin, who pitched 18 1/3 scoreless innings for the Stars in May 1992.

It's southpaw Wes Whisler's turn tomorrow in a 2:00 PM game, as he faces Steve Hammond (1-3, 8.53)....... Hammond faced the Barons three times last year, winning the first two games, shutting them out on four hits over six innings on July 5, then holding the Barons to three hits over seven innings and striking out nine on July 25...... He lasted only two innings and took the loss on the third-to-last game of the season.

The Stars were 11-5 at Regions Park, or Hoover Met, as I called it, last year....... Jeff Eure and Mike Carlin are on 0-fer slumps that have reached 28 at-bats....... Yohannis Perez is 2-for-24 in his last seven games and Hernan Iribarren is 3-for-25 (.120) in his last six games....... As a team, the Stars are hitting an abysmal .230.

Now 26-year-old Noochie Varner, who played for the Stars in 2003 and started out 0-for-17 before getting a soft single to right center in a June 3 game against Mobile, has the 3rd best average in Double-A right now, hitting .375 for Corpus Christi in the Texas League.

Welch tosses five hitless innings

By Shane Figueroa / Special to MLB.com

David Welch hurled five hitless innings as the Brevard County Manatees held on for a 2-1 victory over the St. Lucie Mets and a sweep of Saturday's doubleheader.

Making his first start of the year, Welch retired the first 14 batters he faced before hitting Joshua Peterson with a pitch. He got Rafael Arroyo to fly out to center to end his night.

The 23-year-old left-hander from Australia struck out one and did not walk a batter.

"It was exciting," said Welch. "I tried to take what I've been doing in relief into my start, and it worked."

Welch had been used exclusively out of the bullpen, allowing just one earned run over five innings in four appearances. But a rainout earlier in the week created the need for a spot start, and he took advantage.

"I felt good in the bullpen but was still pretty nervous," said Welch. "I tried to take what I've been doing in relief and make it work tonight. I knew I was on a pitch count, so I just threw strikes with my curveball and spotted my fastball."

Welch eventually worked in his changeup and got eight ground ball outs. He left after throwing 51 pitches but did not lobby to stay in the ballgame.

"I wasn't thinking about it that much," he said of the no-hitter. "It was a close game. I was just focusing on not putting runners on base and was just trying to get ground balls and get us back to the dugout."

Dave Johnson lost the no-hit bid when he gave up a one-out double to Jonathan Malo in the sixth of the seven-inning game.

"I was pulling for D.J. because he's been pitching so well for us," Welch said. "He came in (after allowing the hit) and apologized. And I was like, 'Don't worry about it, you didn't let the run in.'"

Johnson fanned four in two innings to record his second save. He allowed a solo homer to Ryan Coultas with two outs in the seventh but came back to strike out Peterson to close the game for the Manatees (15-8).

Two years ago, Welch came out of the bullpen and was one of four Helena Brewers who combined on a Pioneer League no-hitter against the Billings Mustangs.

"When you start, it's all up to you. It's just a different deal, it's your game," he said.

Carlos Corporan went 2-for-3 with an RBI single and Ryan Barba was 1-for-2 and plated the Manatees' first run with an RBI single in the third.

Mike Swindell (1-1) suffered the hard-luck loss for the Mets (11-11) after allowing one run on four hits and one walk in five innings.

Lluberes limits Mets

Rafael Lluberes tossed six strong innings as streaking Brevard County defeated visiting St. Lucie, 5-1, in the opener of Saturday's doubleheader.

Lluberes (2-1) allowed a run on four hits and three walks with three strikeouts before Luis Pena tossed a perfect seventh to close out the Manatees' sixth straight win.

Carlos Corporan highlighted a four-run fourth with a two-run homer and J.R. Hopf added an RBI double for Brevard County (14-8).

Mets starter Deolis Guerra (1-3) lasted 3 2/3 innings, surrendering four runs on four hits and two walks.

Ryan Coultas delivered an RBI single and Daniel Murphy had two hits for the Mets (11-10). -- Shane Figueroa/MLB.com

POWER STREAK SNAPPED AT 14

The Lexington Legends hit four home runs on Saturday night and handed the West Virginia Power their first loss in 18 days, snapping their 14-game winning streak with a 9-1 victory at Applebees Park.

Lexington took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on back-to-back home runs from Jordan Parraz and Chris Johnson. Johnson's home run was a solo blast and he hit another one in the bottom of the third inning to put the Legends up 4-1.

Kenny Holmberg hit his fourth home run of the year, a solo blast in the second inning which was West Virginia's only run of the game. Jimmy Van Ostrand hit Lexington's fourth homer of the game, a two-run shot in the fifth inning. The Legends scored three times in the eighth inning after Nick Moresi ripped a two-run triple and later scored on Greg Buchanan's groundout.

Cole Gillespie hasn't hit all year, and hasn't been talked about much. Meanwhile, Errecart continues to mash, and I still think he'll be the first position player promoted up the chain this year.

The Errecart-Gillespie duo reminds me of the Katin-Braun duo from last season...

Cole is doing ok...he's striking out a bit much, but he's still getting on base and hitting for ok power...if you check his splits, you'll see he's being eaten alive at Space Coast stadium

Pogo how so? Other than one is mashing and the other is hitting below average, I don't see a similarity. I'm curious on your opinion.
