Huntsville Box Score:

Steve Moss on base four times, homers -- apparently the light bulb has gone off and is high wattage; got to be honest, bummin' about Yohannis Perez' start; Lou Palmisano also has four stolen bases...

Reliever notes -- Corey Thurman strands two inherited runners in the 7th; Joe Thatcher extricates himself from his own two-out jam in the 8th; Marino Salas finally looks human in the 9th, but the cushion was large enough...

I have to say that it's interesting to see that through April, Sollman (the new youklis??), Palmisano, and Moss are putting up much better numbers than Fielder, Weeks, Hardy, Hart, or Hall did in Huntsville. It'll be something to continue following.

Well, remember that Moss is four months older than Fielder, and that it's his second shot at AA. Not Fielder-when-he-was-in-AA, but Fielder right now as a mainstay of the major league lineup. (That's not a shot at Moss as I still like the guy...it's also fair to say that he has a bit more defensive value and that Fielder is a tough guy to match hitting numbers with.) Same but moreso for Sollman and Palmisano, both born in '82 as were Weeks, Hall, and Hardy.

I understand SoCal. I wasn't trying to make a point with my post, except to say that their numbers are interesting so far. I hadn't thought much of any of these 3 outside of Helena. So it's putting them on the radar in my mind.

I haven't followed any minor league games tonight, with the first Brewer game I've ever gotten to watch in HD. Yes I'm a nerd, but I can't get over sports in HD.

I will say good for Yo, but it's sort of expected now, which is odd. I'm more upset when Yo and Inman give up runs than I am happy when they do what they are supposed to.

Final: West Virginia 14, Hagerstown (Nationals) 3

West Virginia Site Game Summary:

NINE RUN FIFTH PACES POWER IN WIN

The West Virginia Power sent 14 batters to the plate and scored nine runs on nine hits in the fifth inning of Monday night's game against the Hagerstown Suns as they went on to win their 17th game of the year 14-3.

Chuckie Caufield's RBI single in the first inning was his first of four hits and it gave the Power an early 1-0 edge. The Suns answered with a two-run first inning, scoring on an RBI double from Stephen King and Chris Marrero's run-scoring single. Caufield struck again in the third inning with a game-tying RBI single and Kenny Holmberg put the Power in front again on a three-run homer, his fifth of the year.

West Virginia did most of their damage in the fifth inning. Caufield brought in his third run of the game on a base hit before Andrew Lefave laced a single to score Michael Brantley. Steve Chapman singled in a run later in the frame before he and Taylor Green scored on Darren Ford's triple. Brantley's second single of the inning produced the seventh run of the fifth and Lefave knocked in the final two runs on his second single of the inning. Hagerstown scored the final run of the game on Alexis Nunez' solo home run in the sixth inning.

Mike McClendon (2-0) was solid through six innings, allowing three runs on five hits and struck out five to get the win, J.T. King pitched three scoreless innings to get the save while Chris Lugo (0-1) was tagged with the loss.

Chuckie Caufield and Michael Brantley both hit safely four times. Brent Brewer reached safely in three of six trips to the plate, while Caufield, Andrew Lefave and Kenny Holmberg all drove in three runs a piece.

The Power improved to 17-4 with the win and the Suns fell to 9-15 with the loss.

The Power will continue the four game series with Hagerstown at Municipal Stadium on Tuesday morning. The Power will start right hander Alex Periard (1-0, 1.29) and the Suns will counter with left hander Yunior Novoa (0-3, 6.19). The first pitch is scheduled for 10:35 AM (9:35 Central).

West Virginia Box Score:

RHP J.T. King now has eight scoreless innings since coming off the D.L. to open the season; can't say enough about this offense, kudos to young hitting coach Corey Hart...

Final: Brevard County 13, Vero Beach (Devil Rays) 6

Down 6-5 in the 9th, Manatees score eight runs!

Brevard County Box Score:

Carlos Corporan a grand slam in the 5th, giving Brevard a 5-1 lead at the time; Freddy Parejo with a 9th inning grand slam of his own and reaches safely four times; Alcides Escobar 3-for-5, now at .320 -- incredibly with his speed and athleticism, all 31 of his base hits this season are singles, amazing; Chris Errecart a base hit and two walks; need to get Lorenzo Cain going...

Brevard County Game Log:

Steve Garrison's 5th inning wasn't pretty, but all five runs that inning were unearned; UW-Milwaukee's Ben Stanczyk's scoreless inning streak to start the season now at 12.2 innings, with a batting average against under .100 (just four hits allowed)...

Jose Capellan allows a walk-off three-run home run to ruin an otherwise perfect organizational day -- ugh....

Nashville Expanded Box Score:

All the details from the Sounds site later on; Yovani Gallardo now with a 42-to-8 K/BB ratio, 9-to-1 this evening; Ryan Braun with a walk and HBP, only fielding chance was a pop out...

Yeah, it's nice to see these guys off to good starts, and there's still hope for all of them to varying extents...Moss most of all in my mind because of his position, defense, age. If Palmisano can hit even a bit he has some potential value as well.

Moss Keeps Up With Jones in Stars' Victory

Steve Moss clubbed a three-run home run and Mike Jones put together six solid innings for a second straight start in Huntsville?s 6-4 win over Birmingham Monday afternoon at Regions Park. The Stars grabbed the last two games of the series to improve to 11-12 and return home with a split in their 10-game road swing, while the Barons fell to 14-11.

Birmingham southpaw Ryan Wing retired the side in order in the first inning but opened the second with back-to-back walks to Lou Palmisano and Brendan Katin before Moss ripped a 3-1 offering down the left field line that hooked over and around the foul pole for his third long ball of the season and second of the road trip. Birmingham manager Rafael Santana, catcher Jeremy Frost and Wing all argued to no avail that the ball was foul. Wing, who had his scoreless innings streak snapped at 13 1/3, allowed three runs on one hit over three innings and suffered his first loss of the season.

Fernando Hernandez took over in the fourth and retired the first two hitters before Moss walked, Hernan Iribarren singled and Jeff Eure followed with a triple to push the visitors lead to 5-0. Cory Aldridge hit a leadoff home run in the fifth against Jones to make it 5-1 and Jeremy West grounded into a double play in the sixth to plate Jason Bourgeois to cut the Stars? lead to 5-2.

Jones earned his second win of the season after allowing one earned run on six hits while walking one and striking out one. Luis Villareal opened the seventh on the hill and was removed with runners at first and second base and one out and replaced by Corey Thurman, who got out of trouble by getting Jeremy Frost and Robert Valido to fly out. Joe Thatcher retired the first two hitters in the eighth inning before giving up a single to West and a double to Thomas Collaro but ended the threat by striking out Aldridge.

The Barons cut the lead to 6-4 in the ninth on a two-run home run by Ricardo Nanita, who hit safely in all five games and finished the series with eight hits in 16 at-bats. The runs were the first allowed in nine innings by Marino Salas, who set down the next three hitters to end the ball game.

The Stars return home Wednesday night to open a five-game set against Chattanooga with left-hander Sam Narron taking the mound against Lookouts? left-hander Tyler Pelland. Coverage of the game begins at 6:50 6.m. central time and can be heard locally on SportsRadio 730 WUMP and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.
