West Virginia Site Game Summary:

POWER OFFENSE ERUPTS AGAIN

Though they were held to just one hit through the first five innings of Tuesday morning's game against Hagerstown, the Power offense scored runs in each of the last four innings, including eight in the seventh as they defeated the Suns 14-3.

Michael Brantley and Chuckie Caufield hit back-to-back two-out singles in the sixth inning before Andy Bouchie drove them home with a double. West Virginia pulled away with an eight-run seventh inning. The Power sent 13 batters to the plate and scored eight runs on seven hits. Darren Ford knocked in his first of three runs in the game with a base hit before Jimmy Mojica scored the second run of the inning on Erick San Pedro's errant throw. Caufield ripped an RBI single and shortly thereafter Kenny Holmberg reached on Coby Mavroulis' error to plate another run. Steve Chapman brought in two more runs on his second single of the inning and Martin Maldonado and Mojica hit back-to-back RBI singles to finish the eight-run frame.

West Virginia plated a run in the eighth inning as Brent Brewer scored on Caufield's groundout. The Suns scored all three of their runs on a pair of home runs in the eighth. Joe Napoli hit a solo homer and three batters later Chris Marrero hit a two-run shot. West Virginia was not done, as they scored three more times in the ninth. Jimmy Mojica's groundout produced the first run before Darren Ford doubled in the next two.

Alex Periard (2-0) pitched six scoreless innings of four-hit ball and struck out four to get the win. Mike Ramlow allowed three runs on four hits through three innings to get the save while Yunior Novoa (0-4) was tagged with the loss.

Ford paced the Power with three hits and three RBI. Michael Brantley and Steve Chapman both reached safely four times, five Power players knocked in multiple runs and five Power players scored multiple runs.

The Power improved to 18-4 with the win and the Suns fell to 9-16 with the loss.

The Power will continue the four game series with Hagerstown at Municipal Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. The Power will start left hander Zach Braddock (2-0, 0.47) and the Suns will counter with left hander Marco Estrada (0-2, 6.00). The first pitch is scheduled for 1:05 PM (12:05 Central).

West Virginia Box Score:

Our friend from Quebec, young Mr. Periard, has been one of the very best surprises of the early season -- he's been dominant; 86 runs in the last nine games for the Power -- nearly 10 a game!

Man when I first checked out the box score, I had to do a double take - thought I was looking at yesterday's. This team is a juggernaut.

EDIT: And by 'team' I mean West Virigina of course.

I'm encouraged by Brewer thus far. Keep hitting son, with a name like that you must make the big league club!

Final: Nashville 14, Iowa (Cubs) 4

Sounds Snap Skid With 14-4 Rout Of Iowa

DES MOINES ? The Nashville Sounds snapped their five-game losing streak in a big way on Tuesday evening at Principal Park, crushing the division-rival Iowa Cubs, 14-4.

With the victory, Nashville (14-11) improved to 5-1 against the I-Cubs this season.

The 14 runs scored matched a season high for the Sounds; the club also plated 14 on April 14 at New Orleans. Eleven of Nashville?s 14 runs on Tuesday came with two outs in an inning.

Zach Jackson (4-2) was effective from the hill and from the batter?s box in leading the Sounds to victory. The left-hander allowed four runs on eight hits over seven-plus innings of work, his longest outing of the season, while striking out four batters and walking two. At the plate, Jackson went 2-for-5 with a double and team-high four RBIs to help his own cause.

Six Sounds players recorded multiple-hit evenings, led by Ryan Braun?s 4-for-6 effort that included his team-leading 10th double and three runs scored. Andy Abad and Ozzie Chavez each produced three RBIs and Chris Barnwell drove in a pair of runs to join Jackson in the multi-RBI club on the night.

Nashville grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning after Iowa manager Buddy Bailey?s decision to issue a two-out intentional walk to Barnwell to load the bases for Jackson backfired. The left-hander ripped a bases-clearing, three-run double to left off Iowa starter Angel Guzman but was thrown out at third to end the inning as he attempted to extend the hit to a triple. The double, his first hit of the year, produced Jackson?s first career RBIs. In addition to Barnwell, Abad (walk) and Vinny Rottino (single) also scored on the play.

Sounds centerfielder Callix Crabbe stifled Iowa?s first scoring opportunity in the bottom of the second when he threw out Geovany Soto at the plate as the Cubs catcher attempted to score on a Carlos Rojas two-out single.

Guzman faced another two-out, bases-loaded jam in the third and got touched for four runs as Nashville extended its lead to 7-0. After retiring the first two batters of the inning, the Iowa right-hander allowed a single to Braun, hit Brad Nelson with a pitch, and gave up an Abad single to fill the bases before walking Rottino on four pitches to force home Braun for a 4-0 Sounds lead. Chavez followed with a bases-clearing, three-run triple to center.

Guzman (0-2), who took his second loss in two starts against Nashville this season, was removed after allowing seven runs on four hits in only three innings. He walked four batters while striking out two. The right-hander?s ERA in his two starts against the Sounds stands at 22.50 (15 ER / 6.0 IP).

Iowa broke up Jackson?s shutout bid in the bottom of the sixth, plating four runs against the left-hander. Eric Patterson led off the frame with a triple to center and scored on Casey McGehee?s ensuing groundout. With two down in the frame, Soto walked and Buck Coats was hit by a pitch before Angel Pagan, who finished 3-for-4 on the evening to pace the Cubs, belted a three-run homer to left to make it a 7-4 contest. It was his first tater of the season.

Nashville put the game out of reach with a five-run seventh against Cubs reliever Federico Baez. Abad got things started when he swatted a three-run home run to right, his third roundtripper of the season. Braun and Nelson, who preceded Abad with singles, scored on the blast.

The scoring continued later in the frame when Rottino doubled and scored on Jackson?s second run-scoring hit of the night, a two-out single to right. Crabbe followed with an RBI triple to right, his team-leading second three-bagger of the year.

The Sounds added two more scores in the eighth against Baez courtesy of Barnwell?s two-out, two-run single. Baez allowed seven runs on 10 hits in only two innings of relief work for Iowa.

Alec Zumwalt followed Jackson on the hill for Nashville and worked two hitless frames including a pair of strikeouts to close out the contest.

Nashville, which went 6-for-16 with runners in scoring position on the evening, was 3-for-5 with the bases loaded after entering the game with only one hit in 11 bases-juiced at-bats on the year.

The teams continue the series with a 12:05 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Principal Park.

Right-hander R.A. Dickey (1-3, 7.43) will toe the rubber for Nashville in the opener and face Iowa southpaw Sean Marshall (NR), who will make his first Triple-A appearance of the season. Sounds left-hander Lindsay Gulin (0-0, 15.43) will make his first start of the season when he mans the bump in the nightcap. He?ll be opposed by I-Cubs left-hander J.R. Mathes (2-2, 5.40).

Nashville Box Score:

Hate to highlight the lone player with a tough night, but it's been a rough start to the season for Drew Anderson...

Escobar finally gets an extra base hit. He's been a singles machine.

Braun and Rottino are just putting up silly numbers right now. Nice to have guys like that waiting in the wings. But I can't imagine Braun will be in AAA for a whole lot longer.

And the Brewers organization is now 30 games over .500. No weak links this year.
