Fielder's 50th HR post-game comments (Merged: Cecil fires back)

temke
I don't know why people expect Prince to patch things up right now. It's not really anyone's business, and he's made it clear that he doesn't want his father to be a potential distraction right now. Really, I wish people would stop talking about it and focus on Prince Fielder the player, and not his estranged relationship with Cecil.

I'm going to try not to make any of this real personal, but guys...we don't know. I haven't spoke with my Dad since 1986. Lots of reasons why. Bottom line is we don't know, we will never know. Sad part is this stuff is aired in public. Who is to blame? Who should make the first step? I'd suggest that isn't up for us to decide.

If Prince has Cecil removed from a stadium in the future-- people will talk about that as much as his achievements at the plate.

Prince has done his share of jawing about his dad and 50 HRs, etc. -- I am not saying at all that he hasn't been wronged, or shouldn't be angry, however, he probably isn't taking the best path to keep his father out of his news.

If Prince didn't want people to ask him about his dad he should have chosen another profession.

I'm sorry, but Cecil Fielder seems like an extremely scummy individual, at least to me. Also, I realize that Prince refused to speak with Jeremy Schaap, but the "report" on E-60 seems to me to be almost totally one-sided in Cecil's favor. And I'm sorry, but Schaap showing "concern" over their relationship is bogus. Like he really wants them to reconsile. Schaap is basically the sports version of an ambulance-chaser, always looking for controversy. He's like a metrosexual Nancy Grace.

Cecil's gambling problems are very well-documented, yet they barely warrented a mention in the segment. I also find it ironic that Cecil was accusing Prince of being immature, while Cecil himself continues to not take any personal blame for the situation. Collection agents approached a 20-year-old Prince after a minor league baseball game, because Cecil was MIA. Now THAT'S might fine parenting. There are parents and sons all over the country who aren't on speaking terms. Why does everyone cry foul when it happens with a sports celebrity. Maybe Cecil has turned his life around, I don't know. I do know, however, that grousing back and forth in the media will not help the healing process. Cecil showed a lack of maturity by agreeing to even be on E-60.

The last thing I want to see in 2009, when the Brewers are about to win their second straight World Series, is stories about Prince v. Cecil -- rather than stories about the Brewers achievement.
ahh, there we go.

Fixed.

I think Prince has a right to feel that way about his dad. I would feel that way if my dad stole money from me and treated my mom bad. If you go to any other ballpark and watch a Brewers game fans chant CECIL when Prince comes up. It's something he deals with every day. Cecil Fielder shouldn't be put in front of a camera...

I went to a game this year where I heard a fan yell "Hey Prince...Your dad owes me 10 grand!" Anyone wanna take a wild guess what stadium this was in?

He deals with this crap between his father and him pretty much every time his name is mentioned. Maybe trashing his father at a press conference isn't the most effective way to make it go away to make it go away, but he's made up his mind, as is sticking with it for now. Gaaah, I felt dirty just talking about a family's intimate personal issues...It's such a shame that its so public.

I just watched that "report" last night for the first time. I can't agree more with Wiggum here. Cecil looked like a total scumbag, and Schaap the Lesser seemed totally willing to enable his self-pity. Cecil presented himself as if though he had a peer relationship, not a father-son relationship, with his kid.

Is it safe to assume that the timing of Prince's post-game comments about his dad was related to the interview he must have been told his dad was doing? I think that's so. At any rate, Cecil's cravenness enhances, not diminishes, Prince's stature by comparison.

Shaap maybe an ambulence chaser, but we watched the show. I know I got sucked in.

on a personal note. I like it when tony Gwynn Sr. stands next to his sone and they interact on the tv screen. It is my hope that in our lifetime that we get that same moment with the Fielders. Time heals all wounds.

Thanks for the video, Tim. I have seen families melt down in similar fashion throughout my life and my interactions with friends and relatives (most of the time, money is the catalyst). Mostly it is because of shortcomings and disappointments, but disagreements about money are generally the ignition point (good thing I've always been poor).

I never heard Cecil's side of this. I see now why Prince is resentful (Cecil's comment that he has not grown up yet). Deep down, we all want to know that we have risen to the level our father has and that he acknowledges and approves of this. In the process of "growing up" we sometimes say and do things that attempt to cut our seniors down to size in the meantime. Does that mean I think Cecil is all 'lily white'? Absolutely not. But neither is his ex-wife and neither is Prince.

I now know there is hope for reconciliation between father and son with the Fielders. Once the fingerpointing is behind them and the two of them can each own their own behavior, two men will be able to establish a bond of mutual respect and then rebuild a father-son relationship (unlike the one that existed before the fracture) provided Cecil does not approach this thing looking for a handout. I am guessing it will take at least as much time as it does for Prince to hit #52 (so Prince can prove to himself once and for all that he is the greater and not the lesser), and then a little more. I suspect Cecil already knows this, but I could be wrong.

Interesting link, Mass. IMO it sounds more like Prince being in the wrong place at the wrong time. In 2000, when these allegations took place, Prince was what, 16, 17? Sounds like it's someone trying to make a fast buck off of Prince's new-found fame. It seems like no matter how far Prince tries to distance himself from Cecil, stuff like this will keep on roping him right back in.

How sad is it that Cecil owned a majority stake in a venture known as Betz Trucking?

"Conspiracy" can be a kind of catch-all legal accusation. Here, Prince might be legally responsible if he had specific knowledge that his parents were attempting to hide their assets, and then knowingly helped them do so. But that's not going to be easy to prove (esp. given the well-known estrangement between father and son).

At first glance, this looks like a case of someone going after the deepest pockets in the family.
