1 basehit to send us to the playoffs - Who ya got?

Menotti80

I was thinking about this today and thought I would get other peoples' opinions:

Situation:
Last game of the season. If the Brewers win, we are in the playoffs. If they lose, we are out.
Top/Bottom 9th, down 1.

2 guys in scoring position, 2 outs. Lets jsut say that gwynn and stocker are the runners, so any single scores 2 and wins the game.

Who do you want up there?

My top 3 choices would be Jenkins, Estrada or Billy Hall. Jenkins hit both lefties and righties well, and he rarely strikes out. He has also been a consistant hitter every year. Estrada is a patient hitter, works the count, and is deceptively fast. He can can even leg out infield singles. Bill Hall is just on fire!!! He never swings at off speed pitches out of the zone and almost never grounds into double plays...

In all seriousness, I would have a tough time choosing between Fielder and Hart. But in the end I would go with Prince. Hart has been clutch, but Prince is tearing it up lately and he's our MVP and the guy who has carried us the last few months. But if Hart was up there, I would not mind one bit...

Hardy would be my third choice followed by Braun, Weeks and Dillon. Jenkins, Mench, Estrada, Gross, etc are on the next tier down.

Another interesting though would be: Who would you LEAST want to have up there?

My choice would be Hall, as much as I like the guy, root for the guy, and as clutch as he was at times last year...

Gotta pretty much agree with you. Although I might take Hart over Fielder.

I'm not sure why anyone would give Hall a pitch on the inner 2/3 of the plate. With his approach at the plate right now there is no way he can hit anything on the outer part of the strike zone.

Miller bunts!

Gwynn's around third! He's gonna try to score!

Here's the throw to the plate and he is...SAFE! SAFE!

The Brewers win it! The Brewers win it! Oh my God, the Brewers win it!

There you go...Damian Miller.

Craig Counsell. Hart seems like the logical choice, maybe Braun 2nd. Either way, I like the speed aspect of beating out something in the infield. And, of course, only half kidding about Counsell, who only seems to do something well with the WS on the line.

Ah, naivin, I purposely got out my copy of Major League earlier this month just to watch the ending - I guess for some attempt at Milwaukee mojo. It practically brings a tear to my eye every time - I think it's just seeing a full house (albeit a full house of extras) go nuts at County Stadium over a baseball 'championship.'

Of course, seeing Rene Russo in her Gunne Sax-style outfit (who dresses like that for a ball game?) waving her ringless hand at Tom Berenger slightly diminishes the happy baseball mood for me. Still, I appreciate the analogy you made.

Returning to the topic at hand, I think I'd least want to see Carne Estrada at the plate in a situation that calls for such clutchiness, and that is not merely because of his knee.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

hart and dillon are my top two, and since this is a late inning hypothetical, dillon would actually probably be available. i would be most comfortable with him up there, he has a great approach at the plate. since he's been up here, he doesn't swing at bad pitches, and he makes good contact. he gets the bat around quick and hits the ball sollid a lot of the time. maybe its his age, or maybe its due to the fact that he finally has a shot in the bigs and wants to make sure he's patient. hell, maybe he just looks good compared to the free-swinging youngsters and "johnny one-pitch" (i can't believe he called himself that). but corey is among the league leaders in hitting with risp. he's definitely #1.

Laugh, but my initial thought was Craig Counsell, just for his WS clinching ABs of yesteryear. The storyline of having the local kid clinch it would be pretty neat too.

Realistically, I'll join the rest and say Corey Hart. I'm afraid he'd be walked to load the bases though.

That is why you save Counsell. So he can hit with the bases loaded.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

My choices would be: Hart, Dillon (LHP), Counsell (RHP). Like someone said, if it is Prince or Braun they probably end up being walked.
